My friend is 31 weeeks with dd2 & has picked a name a lovely name but i said maybe she should re think the spelling as she might be forever telling people how to pronounce it. The name is Heaven spelt backwards Nevaeh it is to me looking at it it looks like Nevah but it is actually pronounced NEV A AH Would you look at the spelling & no how to pronounce it?

Its nothing to do with the spelling backwards thing thats just how it is spelt & the other names she has no problems pronouncing they are just her other choices

Heaven would be an ok name.

I'd pronounce Nevaeh
as a cockney would shout "nevvvvvvaaaaaah!"

Littlemissm, do you mean your friend doesn't care about it being heaven backwards? That isn't the reason she is using the name?

If that's the case and she doing it because it sounds nice the way she pronounces it, then I agree with changing the spelling. Never mention it's anything backwards.

Nevayah is a perfectly pretty name, it's the 'heaven backwards' thing that makes it so contrived imo.

5DollarShake · 08/03/2010 11:54

Yeah, I'm really confused by the whole spelling it backwards thing, too.

Why mention it, if it has nothing to do with it?

If she isn't fussed about it being heaven spelled backwards, then just spell it how it should be pronounced, surely? No great dilemma, is there?

FanjolinaJolie · 08/03/2010 12:38

I would say just call the blessed girl Heaven and be done with it.

SoupDragon · 08/03/2010 12:45

"just because the spelling is heaven spelt backwards has f all to do with it"

But it does because that's what the name is. That's how it was made up.

I'd pronounce it shite Neh VAY uh

Firawla · 08/03/2010 13:21

i think its quite nice...
prn it ne vay uh
the spelling looks pretty in the heaven backwards way

BalloonSlayer · 08/03/2010 13:28

Grumpypants, just to let you know I am going start using: "Or am I pissing the profound point?" in my daily discourse from now on.

It has a certain ring to it, I believe.

Northumberlandlass · 08/03/2010 13:51

What ? I am really confused. Why point out that it is heaven spelt backwards?

My name is Mari (ok somewhat outing myself now) and I have always had to correct people. My name is NOT Marie / No I haven't missed an 'e' off the end etc

I don't like my name very much because as a child I was less inclined to correct people as it embarrassed me, now of course I don't mind.

I like unusual names, but I wanted to call my child something that was a little unusual, but was easy to read and spell.....so Archie is was.
xx

BessieBoots · 08/03/2010 13:53

Mari is a lovely name- do you pronounce it "marry" as we d here in Wales?

I know lots of little Maris!

Northumberlandlass · 08/03/2010 13:58

Thanks - I (well my parents) prounced it Mar- ree (can you read that? I never know how to spell it out).

The Welsh / Scottish / Irish don't have a problem with it at all and each say it a bit differently and it is lovely.

I live in Northumberland (as my name suggests) and the geordie accent doesn't do much for it at all !

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/03/2010 14:25

neeve is how i would prenounce it

FlamingGalar · 08/03/2010 14:46

Am I the only one reeling from Perver?!

Heaven is hideous as a name. Why else would someone see fit to have to reverse it!

SusieCarmichael · 08/03/2010 15:11

have you noticed that this has made discussions of the day and even mumsnet can't spell it!

i think that says something....

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 08/03/2010 17:26

I'd pronounce it Bol-Locks.
HTH

mckenzie · 08/03/2010 17:33

forgive me please for not reading the whole on this thread but as someone who has a name that 99% of folk cannot pronounce or spell correctly I would say "don't do it". In fact i wouldn't say "don't do it" if i was asked, I would shout "DON'T DO IT!"

CaitlinMeringue · 08/03/2010 17:33

no no no gherkin

B'lox is bettah

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/03/2010 17:42

pmsl susie - no i hadnt noticed that till you said

ShellingPeas · 08/03/2010 17:46

Skcollob is better. Could be a boy's name then.

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 08/03/2010 18:24

I think the OP's "friend" is actually the OP herself and she is the one wanting to name her child this ridiculous name.

Lonnie · 08/03/2010 19:26

I Dont like it never have it reminds me of the handcream nivea and that is how I would pronounce it too I Dont care for heaven for a girl either

littlemissm · 11/03/2010 16:13
