Have finally convinced DH to change her name and want to do it asap so I can move on and worry about other things! Both of us like either name, Imogen is my first choice (but our surname starts with an 'm'and ends in 'n' therefore bit of a mouthful) and Ellen is his first choice but there are problems as we live in a place were people drop 'h' therefore potential Helen / Ellen confusion.

OP posts:

I prefer Imogen, very pretty

MissisBoot · 22/12/2008 18:10

imogen - think it will be fine with a m surname.

MadameCastafiore · 22/12/2008 18:10

Imogen as she will be called Ellie if she is actually called Ellen and there are about 50 billion billion Ellie/Ella's in the world at the moment!

TaLcYundertheMistletoe · 22/12/2008 18:11

Imogen, i say go for imogen!

SecretSlattern · 22/12/2008 18:16

I would go for Ellen and insist that people address her properly, as we had to do with DD.

happymostofthetime · 22/12/2008 18:20

Imogen love it!

silverfrog · 22/12/2008 18:20

I prefer Imogen

chandellina · 22/12/2008 18:22

i'm another vote for Imogen

annasmami · 22/12/2008 18:22

Only negative about Imogen imo is that it doesn't travel well i.e. it's not (easily) pronouncable in other languages. Ellen, on the other hand, is much easier to pronounce in most languages.

This may, of course, not matter to you.

RumMum · 22/12/2008 18:53

Noooooooooooooooooooo Ellen.. Nell for short

littleboyblue · 22/12/2008 18:54

Another vote for Ellen and Nell for short.

poinsettydog · 22/12/2008 19:05

Ellen, def. It is a lovely, underused name. I know two Ellens and they are never shortedned to Ellie

Ellbell · 22/12/2008 19:09

I have an Ellen. She has never been Ellie, though I do call her Elsie sometimes (also 'Ellbell'... guess where my MN name came from?).

We also live in a place where people drop their aitches. She occasionally does get called Helen (including my my MIL, who just seems to get her tongue in a knot with it) but not enough to be seriously annoying. As soon as she could talk, pretty much, she developed a nice condescending 'My name is Ellen'... That normally sorts them out!

I do like Imogen too though.

RumMum · 22/12/2008 19:12

ooooohhh Ellbell... my DDs nickname is Ellebell or elliebellie...

chaufleur · 22/12/2008 19:14

Imogen

It's far more feminine/sassy/alluring, than Ellen, IMHO.

Ellen (to me) is maybe cute on girls up to aged 10, then it becomes frumpy, do-goodery, head-girl type name (sorry everyone who loves Ellen as a name!!)

Whereas Imogen is nice on little girls and big girls!

Also I fear that Ellen is going to become over-popular whereas Imogen has always bobbed around the popular edges without that enormous burst of popularity (which is always followed by a decline).

Ellen is in the same bracket as Ruth (also IMHO) - if you love the name Ruth then go for Ellen!

BabyBaby123 · 22/12/2008 19:15

prefer Imogen

chaufleur · 22/12/2008 19:16

Gawd, only gone and crossed posts with the mother of an Ellen...

I'm sure YOUR Ellen is fabulous.

stillenacht · 22/12/2008 19:17

Ooh personally i really dislike the name Imogen - too cutesy, hair in bunches but ime of imogens a bit snotty and spoilt (silly i know but hey!).

I prefer Ellen or Elena (like the Nell short version too!)

stillenacht · 22/12/2008 19:18

Elena pronounced E-lay-na that is

BabyBaby123 · 22/12/2008 19:19

being nosey I know, but op - why are you changing your dd's name? How old is she? And why if you have an appointment tomorrow to change from a name you have obviously gone off/changed mind about are you still trying to decide on the new name today!!
