Have finally convinced DH to change her name and want to do it asap so I can move on and worry about other things! Both of us like either name, Imogen is my first choice (but our surname starts with an 'm'and ends in 'n' therefore bit of a mouthful) and Ellen is his first choice but there are problems as we live in a place were people drop 'h' therefore potential Helen / Ellen confusion.

Ellen

It's a more feminine name, and it sounds nice in French, German and Spanish too (whereas Imogen doesn't).

lizziebeth · 22/12/2008 21:37

Definitely Imogen. I like how it shortens to Immy too.

StreetcarNamedDesire · 22/12/2008 21:38

Ellen! But both are lovely.

jobschmob · 22/12/2008 21:40

Definitely Ellen.

pipintroll · 22/12/2008 23:43

Imogen!

puffling · 22/12/2008 23:56

Go for another one entirely.
How about Cecilie or Colette?

islandofsodor · 23/12/2008 00:05

Ellen.

No-one calls my Ellen Ellie. We actually intended her to be Ellie for short, she was named after my grandmother who became Nellie but we never called her Ellie.

It is only very occasionally that someone who doesn't know us very well thinks she is Ellen.

laughgiraffe · 23/12/2008 00:53

Well done, Makkapakka. Either way i'm happy for you. (I've been following your story). I think wisemens comments are very wise. Names mean more to some people than others. You're one of those people for whom names are v important. Hubby will love her just as much as an imogen, and wont be wondering "if only" in 5 years time. SO STICK TO YOUR 1ST CHOICE ...and call her IMOGEN.

Kristingle · 23/12/2008 01:21

Imogen

hunkermunker · 23/12/2008 01:31

If you have a Sam, don't call her Ellen.

Sam and Ellen is one step away from Sam and Ella.

TooMuchMakkaPakka · 23/12/2008 01:36

actually DH really wanted sam and ella he thought it was funny . So I suggested Ellen as a compromise on this as I thought Sam n Ella was ridiculous. The midwife who delivered her had a Sam and an Ella but also had a James too.
Thanks for the support laughgiraffe. I let you know when it's all sorted.

Both names are nice.
I would not shorted Ellen.
I think I slightly prefer Imogen but there is not a lot in it, very slight.

pamelat · 23/12/2008 09:04

"Shorten" ...!

treacletart · 23/12/2008 09:13

We have an Imogen - shortened to Mimi - have never regreted our choice but it's definitely getting very popular.

Pinkjennybellrock · 23/12/2008 09:14

Imogen

PuzzYuleLogs · 23/12/2008 09:30

I have just read Ronaldinhio's post. So very very true.

pipsqueak · 23/12/2008 09:42

i have an ellen now aged 13 - tis true there are a lot of them in her year - not sure it is still as popular for littl ones though as there are none in dd2 year at school (yr2) . my dd is called ellie as
well as ellen but we like both- imogen is a pretty name though too- let us know which you chose.

yellowflowers · 23/12/2008 10:05

I agree with ronaldinhio about ellens all being lovely with a heart of a lion.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/12/2008 10:12

I think Imogen is lovely.
What is your dd's name at the moment?

LynetteScavo · 23/12/2008 10:16

Imogen - but what is her name now, and why are you changing it????????

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/12/2008 10:22

I just looked the name on your other thread, fwiw, I do like her name as it is now but Imogen is nice too.

clairebear88 · 23/12/2008 10:23

Hi

My vote is for Imogen as very pretty and love Immy as nn too

lunamoon2 · 23/12/2008 11:45

I didn't know Ellie was short for Ellen.

I like Ellen and Imogen, but don't choose Imogen if it doesn't fit with your surname!!! Kids (and parents)can be very cruel and will torment her if she has a mouthful of a name.

TooMuchMakkaPakka · 23/12/2008 15:48

It's Imogen, although they are both lovely names, so no disrespect to any Ellens. The registrar nearly sent me away as I hadn't totally decided . In the end she printed out fake certificates (not on correct paper and of course i didn't keep them) with each combination of names and as soon as I saw them i knew which was right.
Thanks for your input.
ps please don't ask you registrar to do this - i'm sure it's illegal and she just took pity on me because she wasn't busy and i told her if i returned without changing it DH would be very exasperated. I don't want to pour scorn on her previous name, as i don't want to insult people with that name and we have kept it as a middle name at DH's request, but if you are interested it is on the other thread 'has anyone changed their baby's name after it was registered?'
Thanks again
