What about 'Lucy' but with 'Lux' for short?

Hi,

We really like the name Lux but it doesn't really have a long version. It is from the same origin/route as the name Lucy which we also like so we are toying with the idea of having Lucy as the full name but using Lux as the nickname. What do you think?

Thanks

Yes, I think the lumina is what I read.
I was looking for the word "light" in latin. I found a page where Lux was babylonian or syrian or something. Still means "light" regardless.
You will find a lot of languages with light being in conjunction with "God's light" etc.
I think it is a lovely name and again...it is going to be up to you. You will still find lots of people that disagree and the possibility of teasing is universal anyway.

Must admit I'm not keen on Lux but love Luz which is so similar yet much nicer imo.

chantratotalise · 26/10/2008 21:59

Lux isn't defunct
Don't see why the etymology is relevant, lots of latin root words for names are horrid also.
I agree with expat it's stupid

bastian · 26/10/2008 22:14

No-one seems to agree on the products Lux sells (something to do with soap?) so in my mind the brand has lost any prominence, in fact in ASDA today, I looked and nothing by Lux was being sold. Maybe not defunct, but certainly not really a house hold name for the younger generations.

I don't see why people need to be so passionately negative about names. If you don't like Lux, fine, Girl784 did solicit your opinion so feel free to share. But using all caps and making sweeping statements which are obviously incorrect does devalue your contribution and we're all better off without it.

I thought you were the op bastian, you've only posted on this thread...ever

Hiya,

Came back tonight to see what people have written. Its very odd really as last night I had a balance of positive and negative comments - but mostly well put, constructive comments. Tonight, it seems the name is more offensive!

I posted the thread to just get an idea of how the name would be received. I'm not interested in choosing a name that everyone will like - no such name exists. But wanted to know if there was any real reason not to choose it that I hadn't thought of.

I knew there was a Unilever brand called Lux, but as it isn't one that you often see advertised I personally have no problem with this association. Equally, I grew up with an 'interesting' surname that lent itself to teasing. I never had a problem, but my cousin had such a rough time that he changed his surname as soon as he could. This makes me think that often the bullying a child receives is often related to the child and not to the particular aspect which bullies focus in on. Also, on how the parent has taught the child to respond to such treatment from their peers.

I only hope that if I do choose to call my daughter Lux, that people will respect her and keep their thoughts to themselves as I often do about other peoples names.

Thanks

I'm afraid she won't thank you or Lux.

Lucy Kathryn is lovely, really lovely. Call her that

berolina · 26/10/2008 22:46

thank you for Lux

bastian · 26/10/2008 22:48

I'm not the original poster but I have spoken to her tonight and it doesn't make my statements any more or less valid.

Lux as as serious name choice ?! hmm each to their own but no,i dont like it

and think its kinda cruel ! lol

wehaveallbeenthere · 27/10/2008 01:21

Well put girl784, I'm sure whatever you choose for a name it will be with lots of thought and love.

Dozymare · 27/10/2008 08:10

I would just like to add that in 1970 something my parents gave both my brother and I names that we frowned on by people as they were considered "wacky" "after a good time girl" "after a cowboy" blah blah blah. My Gran even refused to call me by my name for a long time as she hated it so much...

HOWEVER my name is now consistently in the top 10 30 odd years later. My brother's whilst still not poular is certainly not frowned on........

I guess what I am trying to say is that parents should call their children names that they like and whilst it is good to use this as a sounding board, I agree that some of the comments from people on these names threads are incredibly hurtful. As someone else has already posted, there is not a perfect name and the World would be a boring place if there was.

(apologies in advance for typos, trying to do this with a 2 yo on my lap!)

fizzpops · 27/10/2008 08:32

I agree with bastian. By all means give your opinions as they were solicited by the OP after all but it is a names thread fgs there is no need to be rude or aggressive.

As the OP says a name that everyone will like does not exist, for which I am very grateful, the world would be a much more boring place if it did.

plj · 27/10/2008 09:03

Go with the name you like, and even though you asked for others opinions, doesn't mean you need to pay attention to them. I think it's ok that some people do not like the name you like, and to say so, but verging on rudeness is not fair.

macaco · 27/10/2008 09:21

i think lux sounds silly and lucy is a lovely name. if you don't want lucy, how about LUZ, means light in Portuguese and Spanish and is used there as a name. There's a Spanish singer with a beautiful voice called Luz Casal.

SamJohnsMum · 27/10/2008 13:53

I've always liked the name Lucy and I'm sure if you call her Lux, then that will stick too.

No matter what anyone else says about your child's name - in a few years it will be THEM and no one will think it odd at all.

tassisssss · 27/10/2008 14:12

I have a Lucy. We call her Lulu, Lockets, Pockets, Lulubelle, LucyLou and a whole lot of other names too. Lots of our friends call her Lulu too which is interesting.

I'd call her Lucy and use Lux as a nickname and see what happens!

bikerunski · 27/10/2008 17:57

Jo Whiley has just called her new baby girl Coco Lux.

kittywise · 27/10/2008 18:07

lux is horrible, it's soap flakes isn't it?

dooit · 27/10/2008 20:25

Coco Lux sounds like a laxative to me. Sorry Jo.

slayerette · 27/10/2008 20:26

So girl784 - 'fess up. Are you in fact Jo Whiley??????

dooit · 27/10/2008 20:30

dooit · 27/10/2008 20:32

kittywise · 27/10/2008 20:39
