What about 'Lucy' but with 'Lux' for short?

Hi,

We really like the name Lux but it doesn't really have a long version. It is from the same origin/route as the name Lucy which we also like so we are toying with the idea of having Lucy as the full name but using Lux as the nickname. What do you think?

Thanks

Eurgh! Yes indeed Lux sucks.

BUT - if you like it then have it. Agree with findtheriver about nicknames. Too many people on here have the nicknames sorted before they even see their baby . Nicknames evolve.

expatinscotland · 26/10/2008 12:59

Lux?

so what if it doesn't have a 'long' version.

that's a good thing.

it's stooooopid.

zeee · 26/10/2008 13:00

I've loved Lux ever since reading the Virgin Suicides.

I'd call her Lux, maybe put Lucinda on the birth certificate to give her the option for work etc.

SoupDragon · 26/10/2008 13:06

Lux is a terrible name.

shopaholicDIVA · 26/10/2008 13:13

Lux is naff.

OrmIrian · 26/10/2008 14:12

Tis a soap. Or is it washing powder? Summat like that anyway.

Not a little girl.

What's wrong with Lucy as it is?

I thought of this:

Lux

bastian · 26/10/2008 17:45

I can't believe how many people think of soap for the name Lux. Lux isn't a big brand any western country I know of, so unless 40 and 50 years olds will tease her because of her name, I think this soap argument is a little pointless.

Lux (as a girl's name) is etymologically the root of Lucy, making it likely that Lucy is a familiar form of Lux and not Lux a nickname for Lucy.

I think it's a lovely name, and I think maybe your biggest issue will be "Lux sucks and fucks" rather than a contrived association with a defunct brand.

puppydavies · 26/10/2008 18:02

lux the poet by martin millar is one of my favourite books ever but i doubt that's why you picked it

lux is a poet, he has a face like lana turner and legs like betty grable

slayerette · 26/10/2008 18:09

Why would you do that to a child? I have taught toooooo many teenagers to have any illusions left about what they might do and earlier posters are spot on - they won't get the soap connection but the graffiti will declare that 'Lux Sux' and 'Lux Fux', etc.

Poor girl.

bastian · 26/10/2008 18:22

I wouldn't discount a name because it rhymes with something unsavoury, you'd be left with precious little selection.

Even if they are picked on in the playground, they're only a teenager for a few years.

slayerette · 26/10/2008 18:27

Yes, they are only a teenager for a few years. But they're stuck with the name for life.

My sister was nearly called Dorcas because my mum 'really liked the name'. She still wakes up in a cold sweat every now and again 30 years later.

wehaveallbeenthere · 26/10/2008 18:29

Another "Lucy" that I know of also has that knickname. It's unique (well it will be for your child). If you like it then roll with it. Who cares what other people think? Your child will have the formal pretty Lucy and if they choose not to do the Lux later then they don't have to but maybe they will like it.

blinks · 26/10/2008 18:33

Lux Luthor?

teehee

wehaveallbeenthere · 26/10/2008 18:34

I don't know it as with Latin, thought that was Lumina or something like.
Isn't Lux syrian? or babylonian? Not sure. Anyway, don't worry about people making fun of it with crude rhymes. The ones that do will find something crude to rhyme with whate ver a person is named.

wehaveallbeenthere · 26/10/2008 18:38

blinks that would be "Lex Luthor" and you would be making fun of someone named Alex and whatever followed. (rolls eyes)

wehaveallbeenthere · 26/10/2008 18:40

I don't know how many of you were teased as children but if you were you may find that if a child is popular then whatever they are named tends to be also...and vice versa.
What's in a name? It is important to the family and to the child. Beyond that is what you make it.

bastian · 26/10/2008 19:00

@wehaveallbeenthere I think you're right, if your child is unpopular they will be teased and if it's not their name it'll be that they wear glasses or are a redhead or something else they can't really change. If your child is liked then they may have the odd teasing but who hasn't?

I guess you just need to take the bet as to whether you'll have a perfect child or not. I'd bet no-one who's posted here so far has had a perfect child and they could all be teased about something if not their name.

dooit · 26/10/2008 19:13

It only recently occoured to me that my 3 DDs names have cheeky rhymes,

Ruby-Boobie
Eva-Beaver
and Kitty-Titty

VintageGardenia · 26/10/2008 19:13

Tis Latin all right wehaveallbeenthere as in lux umbra dei - light is the shadow of God. There is another word lumen also meaning light, is what you are thinking of maybe.

PuppyMonkey · 26/10/2008 19:19

Lux isn't a defunct brand... here. And anyway that is not the point, nor is it anything to do with it rhyming with fucks.

IT JUST IS A HORRIBLE NAME.... and I don't care if it is Latin and some character from a novel no-one has read is called Lux.

dooit · 26/10/2008 19:19
