What about 'Lucy' but with 'Lux' for short?

Hi,

We really like the name Lux but it doesn't really have a long version. It is from the same origin/route as the name Lucy which we also like so we are toying with the idea of having Lucy as the full name but using Lux as the nickname. What do you think?

Thanks

Actually the more I think about it, the more I agree that if you want it as a name, then go the whole hog and give it as a proper name rather than a nickname.

nicknames should be something that evolve naturally, often to do with a particular endearing trait. (And I mean nickname, not the normal shortening of names like Ben).
All my kids have had nicknames at various times, but these have changed as they've grown. It seems a bit strange to 'decide' on a nickname, a bit artificial I suppose. I had a friend who decided that her baby would be nicknamed 'Pip' before he was born. This didn't relate to his actual name in any way; she just liked it, but tbh it always sounded very false when she and her DH used to say 'Here's Pip's book', 'Pass me Pip' etc. A bit like trying too hard!

I like the fact that children can develop a nickname which may be given by a parent, other relative or child - it just seems more natural to let it happen.

Thanks for the messages so far, we're going to go and eat dinner and discuss but keep posting any ideas - particularly any middle name options would be appreceiated,

Thanks

Lux is a fabulous name - went to uni with a Lucy who was either called "lukes" which she spelt Lux or Locketts..............

Go for it, how long have oyu got to decide??

Podrick · 25/10/2008 19:05

Lux Vivienne

mabanana · 25/10/2008 19:05

Lux? As in soap flakes? Why? Lucy is lovely.

mabanana · 25/10/2008 19:07

Also, everyone will spell it 'Lucks' as in ducks. I really dislike it, it's try-hard. Sorry. Feel free to ignore, I'm sure people hate my kids' names.

Hiya,

We've had dinner and our favourite so far is Lux Kathryn. I like the sound of Kathryn as it is harder sounding than names ending in 'a', 'ie' or 'y'.

Can you think of any other names that have the harder sound to them, like Kathryn, which have 2 or more syllables?

Thanks

If she was 'lucks' surely that will be changed to fucks and sucks when she hits secondary school, you know what teens are like..difficult isnt it?

LadySweet · 25/10/2008 19:24

Makes me think of Lux Interior singer in the cramps, think bobby gillespie of primal scream fame called his son lux

girl784 · 25/10/2008 19:26

Dozymare - we've got til just after Christmas, so awhile to mull it over.

It's taken us ages to come up with anything we like. I did post (under another name) a name we really liked but some people were really rude and it put us off, which left me bothered that I didn't have a name I liked at all.

We're not trying to find an 'unusual' name, we just want to find a name that feels right to us, but we realise we'll never choose something that will be everyones cup of tea.

I love Lux- it's one of the sisters in the Virgin Suicides.
Wouldn't use Lucy though I'm afraid- too popular.

Bloodystumperlicious · 25/10/2008 19:32

It's really growing on me actually, the more I read it on this thread. Might be a bit weird at first but when people get to know her it will just be her.

I really like your favoured middle name too , especially that spelling!

Dozymare · 26/10/2008 06:28

I am expecting my 3rd DC this week and the name we have choosen is not to everyone's taste (Tallulah)... in fact we have had more negative responses than positive - thing is, we love it and I don't care what anyone else thinks!! Oue DS1 is called "Monty" which again was met with but no-one comments on his name now once they meet him!

Am really interested to see how you would pronouce Lux though.......Presumably Lucks??

Liffey · 26/10/2008 12:46

It reminds me of Pamela Principle.

It's a horrible name for a little girl - just sounds like a soap powder or some feminine hygiene wash

Omg, please don't do that to a child. Lux is a soap, end of. And even if it wasn't, Lux would still be a terrible name...

It will always be a soap for me and I would think you were a bit weird if you introduced your DD as named after a soap bar. But, as always with names it is a personal thing and if you are happy with the soap bar connection people will inevitably make, then go for it.

I love Lucy though, really lovely name.
