Classy, old girls names What do you think ??

What do you think of these names for a girl ?

Matilda (Tilly) or Tabitha ?

I'm not pregnant yet but we're trying for no:2. I have a boys name sussed but I'm unsure for a girl.

I wanted somthing slightly unusual that's classy and timeless.

Please don't have a go at me for asking about names when I'm not pregnant, I'm just bored and wondered what ideas you had.

I like Tilly

Don't like Tabitha as it rreminds me of Bewitched. lol!

Matilda is v.popular (I have one!) so keep that in mind if unusual is important to you.

I think there are a lot of Tillys around at the moment, so I'm getting a bit bored of them - sorry

I personally don;t think either are timeless - they're old, yes, but, they're actually very of the moment. they have that particular balance between old and fashionable that makes them very easy to date. truly classy and timeless are, imo, Elizabeth, Alexandra, and ....I'm struggling to think of a 3rd....I actually really like Matilda and quite like Tabitha - but I don;t think they're timeless

funnypeculiar - usually shortened to Tab or Tabs or Tabby, or not at all, depending on what the individual prefers.

Philippa would also fit your requirement IMO.

I think all the Victorian names like Martha, Maude, Beatrice, Esme will date (though I think they're lovely too). There's quite a few of these around.

For timeless you have to go for things like

Alexandra
Victoria
Isabel
Catherine
Emma

Unusual enough to be distinctive these days, but not so unusual that it will earmark you as 2000-2009 vintage in 20 years time.

I like Bryony, Amilia and Kathryn too.

Can Katy be short for Kathryn? I hate Cathy.

frogs - we think alike. I was going to put Victoria but didn/t - not because it doesn;t tick the classy/timeless box but just because I don;t like it! I think you're right about the others. Catherine is actually a very elegant name. hate to say it but if you can imagine a "queen" infront of it then it does the timeless/classic thing!

For the record, we were seriously considering Octavia, but decided it was just the wrong side of the pretentiousness/dateability boundary. Plus I'm enough of a classics nerd that I'd be niggling aware that she wasn't the 8th child.

I love the name Matilda I also love Martha.

When we announced it after she was born, it was noticeable how many people reacted by saying, "...Oh." rather than say, 'Oh, how beautiful", which I suspect is the reaction we'd have got to something more obviuosly modish.

I think the downside of the non-fashionable names is just that, really -- people will think you're being a bit boring. But the upside is that your child will have a name that works in most major languages and cultures, and is impossible to date or draw class/education conclusions from.
