What do you think of these names for a girl ?

Matilda (Tilly) or Tabitha ?

I'm not pregnant yet but we're trying for no:2. I have a boys name sussed but I'm unsure for a girl.

I wanted somthing slightly unusual that's classy and timeless.

Please don't have a go at me for asking about names when I'm not pregnant, I'm just bored and wondered what ideas you had.

Love tabitha - tabs or tab for short.

It reminds me of jilly cooper - its the name of rupert campbell-black's daughter

MrsMattie · 14/09/2008 21:39

Matilda / Tilly must be in the top 10 by now, surely? Everyone seems to love it.

dizzydixies · 14/09/2008 21:41

Alice
Emily
Cecelia
Cordelia
Claudia

I do like both Tabitha and Matilda though

not that thats helping

dinny · 14/09/2008 21:42

I have a Tabitha and her friends call her Tabi. we have a totally unrelated pet name for her!

dinny · 14/09/2008 21:43

lol, we also have acat called Tilly and ALWAYS call her Silly Tilly

pippibluestocking · 14/09/2008 21:45

I have a Matilda - crept into top 50 in 2006 (I think) but definitely wasn't in it last year - don't know any others in RL - other than on Mumsnet of course!

poppy34 · 14/09/2008 21:50

mrsmattie you could have a point - matilda v.popular round here too - two friends just called their dd it.

PersephoneSnape · 14/09/2008 21:52

i have a tabitha, and then had two boys, so my reserve girls name list was unused

matilda, clementine, elsie, ivy, adeline, lilian.

and not related at all, but i love elphaba(h) but i think you'll be spelling it forever for everyone.

georgimama · 14/09/2008 21:53

To me, timeless means neither fashionable nor unfashionable, think Queens of England:

Anne
Catherine
Jane
Elizabeth
Mary
Victoria
Alexandra

or biblical names

Mary (again)
Judith
Martha
Naomi
er..

struggling now...

Salome???

Will shut up and have another glass of wine.

Piffle · 14/09/2008 21:55

Oh piff i love Mabel so much.

I thought no-one else did (inc DH, it's not DD's name!)

Also Agnes, that was DS2 if he'd been DD. Or maybe Florence...luckily we didn't have to decide

Sarah is a nice name that is now less common.

But who are we kidding? Don't all names go in cycles of fashion?

EachPeachPearMum · 14/09/2008 22:35

BBM- Margot is on our list! Though prob as a middle name

Lois, Dulcie, Polly, Connie, Mabel, Freda, Maggie, Pearl.... i agree they'll date, but they're still lovely.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 14/09/2008 22:42

I like Matilda but agree that it is very 'now' - there could be three in her class when she gets to school.

For reasons I can't put my finger on I don't like Tabitha as a name - perhaps it's Beatric Potter's fault - it's a great name for a kitten!

Nice to see people suggesting Katherine which is IMO a fab name - my dd1!

We chose it cos it was timeless, classy, versatile and pretty as well.

Partly we wanted her to have the choice of nn when she got older so have always called her Katherine, and recently friends have been calling her Kath or Kathy. She's 8

Amazed no-one has said dd2's name, which is Rachel. Less versatile, though funnily we are more likely to call her Rach than we are to shorten K's name!

FairLadyRantALot · 15/09/2008 10:41

Tabitha yes.....Matilda...erm...nope and Tilly...shudder...Tilly was used in a really stupid washing up liquid ad in Germany and automatically makes me think of an overweight ole dear in stupid dungarees...
saying that in ms class is a lovely girl called Tilly

frazzledoldbag34 · 15/09/2008 10:42

Tabitha is pretty.
But not as pretty as Kitty. The best name in the world as far as I'm concerned. (Sorry DD2!)

solo · 15/09/2008 10:55

I heard someone call out for their toddler the other day...Matilda. I also heard a woman walking down my road calling her toddler Mary, which really surprised me!
