What do you think of these names for a girl ?

Matilda (Tilly) or Tabitha ?

I'm not pregnant yet but we're trying for no:2. I have a boys name sussed but I'm unsure for a girl.

I wanted somthing slightly unusual that's classy and timeless.

Please don't have a go at me for asking about names when I'm not pregnant, I'm just bored and wondered what ideas you had.

I know a 12 year old Mary

solo · 15/09/2008 12:15

My favourite Aunt was a Mary, but I think it's such an old fashioned name these days to give a baby iyswim. It just seems odd to call a toddler 'Come here Mary.'

dizzydixies · 15/09/2008 12:20

my mum was Mary and I'm a hypehnated name with Mary in it - I think its due a revival!!!!

McDreamy · 15/09/2008 12:21

I love Elizabeth, Elsie, Eliza, Scarlett

TheConfusedOne · 15/09/2008 12:33

Romilly, just love it, pity I am to old to have another, maybe I can suggest it to DDIL when she has one (overbearing MIL emicotion)

AphroditeInHerNightie · 15/09/2008 12:51

I have a Catherine with the middle name of Emma, it's a name used throughout generations of our family with derivations such as Cathy, Cath, Kate, Katy, Kitty, although my DD insists on Cath-er-ine to anyone who tries to shorten it.
Other names on the shortlist were:
Natalie
Grace
Hannah
Rebecca
Elizabeth

A friend, when choosing a name, decided to pick a name that would suit any occupation from shop-girl to high-court judge (can't imagine "the Right Honourable Britney" would really ring too well).

hatwoman · 15/09/2008 13:16

let's not have a Mary revival please. with or without hyphens. dd2 is like you dizzydixies (I wonder if it's the same one) and I adore it because it's very unusual - I do a complete double take if I hear another - I know one woman my age called it and no-one else. yet it's not remotely poncey or difficult. It's pretty and grown up and elegant and timeless. all imho of course. did I mention that I really like dd2's name?

hatwoman · 15/09/2008 13:18

not sure it meets the Queen requirement though not with the hyphen bit, which is integral to her name. she's never just Mary.

Lizzylou · 15/09/2008 13:21

I know a few Matildas and a Mary.

I Love

Annabel(le)
Alexandra
Imogen
Thea

Would all be with Elizabeth as a middle name as it is a family thang.

suey2 · 15/09/2008 13:32

my dd is called millicent - millie for short. obviously i love it!

KAEKAE · 15/09/2008 13:38

I am not keen ono tabitha it reminds me of a cat.. Sorry. But saying that I like Poppy and I've had people saying to me that's a cats name! Sorry rambling.

I like both of them - DS would have been Matilda if he had been a girl.

DD is Harriet and it is a perfect name for her - she just looks like a Harriet.

I also like Esme and Mabel - although no one else seems to like Mabel.

hatwoman · 15/09/2008 13:52

mrswoolf - I was thinking actually that I could see Mary coming back - but still pretty confident that dd's hyphenated name hasn't. she's 6 now and I've vener come across a child with it. It would be interesting to know what proportion of names being 179th makes you, iyswim. I think it's very possible that it's a pretty small proportion of total kids.

dizzydixies · 15/09/2008 16:01

lol hatwoman I was named after my mother and my gran, never shortened ALWAYS both names used, only shortened to initials when I went to uni

my nephew thinks its pretty cool though as its the same as spiderman's girlfriend

hatwoman · 15/09/2008 18:03

ahh. not the same as dd then. my sil is also a MaryPlus. the Plus being neither the same as you nor dd. also formatted like I just wrote that - which is quite unusual too. dd started life like her sil but after the millionth time explaining it we added a hyphen.

SilentTerror · 15/09/2008 18:11

I've got an Elizabeth Mary, like a Tudor Queen!

dizzydixies · 15/09/2008 20:19

ooohhh now I want to know what other Mary- ???? are out there!!

CoolYourJets · 15/09/2008 20:25

Clara.

Just thought of it. Unusual but lovely.

frazzledoldbag34 · 15/09/2008 21:04

My DH just LOVES Mabel - it's a family name from his side.
What about Annie? (there is the cutest little girl at school, just started primary called Annie. She's only 4 with long blonde curls - she is so cute and has made me like the name!)

cremolafoam · 15/09/2008 21:06

Greta
Isa
Edith
Joy
Clara
Edie
Emerald
Olive
Beattie

frazzledoldbag34 · 15/09/2008 21:06

Mary-Ann is nice too.
Mary-Jane and Mary-Beth (loved her in Cagney and Lacey!)

oohh a friend of ours has just had a dd and called her Amelia Kitty too

its lovely

Clary · 15/09/2008 22:29

So many people like Mabel

Where are all the small Mabels then?

Ahh MrsWoolf I see you have one.

DD has a similar kind of name (ie old-fashioned grandma) and I once met someone who knew another girl with her name - whose sisters were Mabel, Constance and Florence! So lovely. (IMO) I longed to know what boy's name they had had in mind...
