What do you think of these names for a girl ?

Matilda (Tilly) or Tabitha ?

I'm not pregnant yet but we're trying for no:2. I have a boys name sussed but I'm unsure for a girl.

I wanted somthing slightly unusual that's classy and timeless.

Please don't have a go at me for asking about names when I'm not pregnant, I'm just bored and wondered what ideas you had.

I have a Tabitha and, tbh, when people tell me it's a cat's name I tend to think 'Well, so what?' - I mean, cats are pretty, elegant, interesting, attractive, self-possessed creatures. I'd rather have a cat's name than an elephant's name or a warthog's name.

I like Matilda, too, but agree that it is v v v popular.

How about Clemency, Eliza or Harriet for a similar feel?

halogen · 15/09/2008 22:54

Oh, and we call our Tabitha Topsy for short. It's a bit silly but it does suit her.

matildax · 16/09/2008 05:43

..........
i am v popular and common!!!
seriously though, i love both your choices of names, 1 more than the other, obviously lol
i only know one, and i dont think it will become too over used, i just think it is a very pretty name, and really rather sweet.
hth xx

What about Flora and Florence? Nice names

angrypixie · 16/09/2008 18:10

NOOOOO Not Flora, you can't expect her to live with the 'easily spread' tag line

Pegdoll · 16/09/2008 18:19

Love Tabitha

How about Charlotte? Classic, gorgeous, still great shortened to Charlie.

Pegdoll · 16/09/2008 18:21

Agree not Flora (not cos of easily spread, arf!) just because it's not strong enough.

Florence is pretty, OR for a bit of french chic - Fleur?

Mylittlebubble · 16/09/2008 18:24

Louisa

A name not commonly used but one you know

Tarantella · 16/09/2008 18:43

Have to quash the anti-Flora stuff on this site but maybe it's because I have never seen the spreads easily advert fortunately. We have a pre-teen Flora named for Flora Macdonald and the Scottish connection despite Dh's margarine reservations, Still very glad we chose this distinctive name, she was the only Flora in a primary school of 400 which overflowed with duplicate Lucy's and Alice's the in names of the mid 90's.

My generation overflows with Katharine/Catherines I have a whole clutch of old friends with the name but since they go by Kathy, Kath. Katie Kate etc they are easily distinguishable. By the way they are nearly all have Anne or Jane for amiddle name! Cyclical fsahions in names are fascinating. For classical names best source is the novels of Jane Austen they are all there and none of them date! (unlike Kayden, I nearly retched when a mum I met yesterday with toddler Kayden in tow boasted how her other child was called Keisha which she got off Ricky Lake, talk about dating the poor kids) Sorry I am ranting now!

Matilda is very over used atm ime so don't go for it if you don't want her to be one of several at school

lottiejenkins · 16/09/2008 19:07

My son never knew his dads parents so we "adopted" him a Nanna and Grandad. Nannas name was Freda,,,,, so i love that name. I also love the name Dulcie too oh and Dolly.....

nooka · 16/09/2008 19:26

If you want to be unusual you need to avoid picking names from your grandparent's generations, as that's a very common thing to do. Hence there are always lots of "old men/women" names around. I think I once even saw some research on this. For less used names it is better to look at your parent's generation (or your own).

hopelesshousewife · 16/09/2008 19:36

Love both Tabitha and Matilda, and also Jemima, Polly, Isabelle, Florence, and Allegra is another favourite - very old fashioned in the hopeless house!

googgly · 16/09/2008 19:41

Charlotte

treacletart · 16/09/2008 20:33

I really like Elizabeth (Eliza and Betsy), I have an Imogen (shortened to Mimi) and don't think anyone else has mentioned Agatha (Aggie perhaps)

hatwoman · 17/09/2008 02:08

I was thinking earlier today I like Margaret too. and it's my mum's middle name. (too late to use it though...)

frazzledoldbag34 · 17/09/2008 10:57

I quite like Barbara.

Page

lottiejenkins · 17/09/2008 14:58

I would have said Page was a modern name? maybe its just me..............

Moogatron · 17/09/2008 16:33

Sarah was dead common when I was a child. Biblical names are pretty timeless. I love Clarissa too. There are quite a few 'timeless' names that I think sound like the person will end up dumpy and boring, but I won't say which ones just in case I offend someone fabulous, skinny and lithe called Dorcas......

My old piano teacher called her daughters Madelaine and Prudence. Gertrude is an oldie too, as is Irene. Dorothy is nice as is Bridget.
