34 weeks with non-ID baby girls and struggling for a second name! Would welcome any opinions on our list.

Iris - I adore this & is 100% my favourite by far. I just want another name I love as much! Our shortlist is -

Esme
Eloise
Louisa
Ava (DH's favourite)
Rowan

Middle names we would ideally like to be from family so

Margaret
Josephine
Helena/Helen
Charlotte
James

TIA

Iris Margaret and Eleanor James. You're welcome!

mathanxiety · 10/06/2026 00:34

Iris Josephine

Eloise Margaret

I think Iris and Eloise go really well together

There are a gazillion Avas aged from 0 to 20. I would avoid it for that reason even though it's a lovely name.

FoxHedgehogBadger · 10/06/2026 00:36

Iris Margaret and Esme Josephine

Handrearedmagpie · 10/06/2026 00:46

Iris Margaret was what I think goes best together.

I do also like Megan as a first name but DH not a fan.

Iris and Esme! I would avoid Rowan James, I know a boy with this exact first and middle name combo.

Iris Margaret is glorious.
Iris Meg for a nick name

Jamima Helen

Ellinor Margaret
Alexandra Meg

For DH..
Ava Josephine - though Ava will date.

Eloise Margaret

I think Iris and Eloise go really well together

This was my suggestion too, both names are beautiful 😍

Congrats on the girly twins, OP!

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 10/06/2026 02:48

I like Ava and Eloise. As for middle names, depending on your last name of course, Ava Jamie and Eloise Charlotte or Eloise Jamie

mathanxiety · 10/06/2026 03:55

Handrearedmagpie · 10/06/2026 00:46

Iris Margaret was what I think goes best together.

I do also like Megan as a first name but DH not a fan.

Iris Margaret and Eloise Josephine then.

Megan to me sounds really 'dumpy' and inelegant. I can't get away from the 'egg' in the middle.

Mumofgirls2017 · 10/06/2026 05:08

Iris & Eve
Iris & Eva

Close to your husband’s favourite @Handrearedmagpie but as above so so many Avas everywhere! These are similar but I think sound nicer with Iris.

Iris & Emmeline (nn. Emme pronounced Emmy) also lovely

DinoDances · 10/06/2026 08:37

I think Eloise and Louisa are just a bit too close to Iris for me (probably because of the ending S sound) and may become a tongue twister. Rowan is too gender neutral next to Iris. So I would pick Esme or Ava, both of which go really well with Iris. If your husband loves Ava like you love Iris, I would ignore popularity and go for it (I haven't met any in baby classes anyway and none in my daughter's nursery, and she's 2, so you never know). Esme is also pretty popular anyway.

For middle names I would pick:

  1. Iris Margaret and Ava Charlotte (if you wanting a sort of "link" with the matching t middle name endings)
  2. Iris Helen and Esme Josephine
But I think any of your first 4 work well with all the names. I really don't like James on girls.

Other names you might like: Seren, Thea, Cecily, Vera, Margot, Sylvie

Let us know what you pick!

NamingNoNames · 10/06/2026 10:01

Iris - like
I'd keep looking.
From your short list I only like Louisa.
Middle names are fine apart from James.

Esme - various spellings, Esmee/Esmay pronunciation. Not keen
Eloise - A bit of a mouthful and the horrible misspelling of Elouise has put me right off it.
Louisa - ok
Ava - I really can't see the appeal of this overused name other than it's a palindrome. Ay-vuh - such a miserable sound.
Rowan - I know it's unisex and I do like it but I suspect you'll get lots of 'One of each - how lovely!' type comments. (You will also get 'Are they identical?' even if they're obviously not)

James - absolutely not. Rowan James is too masculine, and with one of the other names it looks a bit like you wanted a boy.

Myswweetchild · 10/06/2026 10:13

Iris and Esme is lovely
I love Ava,too.
I know it's popular but that wouldn't bother me.
Iris and Juno.
I like Olivia too
Iris and Olivia.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/06/2026 10:18

Iris and Ava - both short and sweet and got that sort of retro granny name vibe.
Eloise and Louisa are a few too many L's and I's with Iris.
Esme is very "meh" IMO and going to result in different pronunciations of Es-me or Es-may
Rowan is too unisex for my liking and gives you a bit of a plant theme!
Iris Josephine and Ava Margaret

Skybluepinky · 10/06/2026 10:29

Done saddle one with boys names Rowan or James as all their life they’ll grow up thinking you wanted a boy.

Fizzysticks · 10/06/2026 10:32

I love Iris and Eloise!

I also really like Iris and Josephine, which I know was a middle name option but goes so well with Iris.

NamingNoNames · 10/06/2026 10:41

Jamima is terrible, @user1492757084 . Jemima is lovely.

Handrearedmagpie · 10/06/2026 13:27

Thanks, so many of the other suggestions, like Eva and Eleanor, we already have in the family. The amount of Eva/Ava’s we know does bother me slightly and I see peoples point that whilst I love Rowan as a name on its own, this baby is part of a pair and may sound like a boys name.

DH has now came back with Anna and I also like Imogen. I think Iris & Immy sound cute together, I think Anna is gorgeous but discounted it at first as I thought it might sound like a mouthful of I was saying “Anna and …” am I overthinking this?

OP posts:
Myswweetchild · 10/06/2026 13:32

@Handrearedmagpie I love Anna. And Imogen. Both beautiful names.

Myswweetchild · 10/06/2026 13:33

Oh, yes, you're probably overthinking it 🤣
