34 weeks with non-ID baby girls and struggling for a second name! Would welcome any opinions on our list.

Iris - I adore this & is 100% my favourite by far. I just want another name I love as much! Our shortlist is -

Esme
Eloise
Louisa
Ava (DH's favourite)
Rowan

Middle names we would ideally like to be from family so

Margaret
Josephine
Helena/Helen
Charlotte
James

TIA

I think Iris & Immy sound cute together, Don't do this. They're two individuals not two halves of a set.

tallyoh · 10/06/2026 13:38

I love Iris. Also like Imogen of your other suggestions.

What about Nell and Iris?

I have a Nell Josephine and I’m entirely biased but I love it.

HumanOfTheWeek · 10/06/2026 14:20

Aerin
Elise
Audrey
Romy
Edith
Elin
Astrid
Aster
Esther

Wecandothisasalways · 10/06/2026 14:22

Iris and Esme
Iris and Olive

Floppyearedlab · 10/06/2026 14:22

James is a boy name
Please don’t inflict that on her when her sister gets a nice girl name

Iris Margaret and Esme Josephine are lovely

DinoDances · 10/06/2026 15:03

I personally wouldn't do the same initials for twins. I think it's too matchy and can be difficult with letters/record keeping etc. Have heard lots of twins say the same.

Iris and Anna sound lovely together.

Handrearedmagpie · 10/06/2026 15:09

Nell is beautiful, is it enough as a first name, as DH has a thing about whatever we intend to call them has to be the name on the birth certificate (ie not Helena but known as Nell).

I also really like Esther but that was previously a hard no from DH. I don’t know why we discounted Amelia either but now I’m leaning back to it.

getting stressed as suddenly feel im running out of time!

We played around with longer options (Eleanor, Helen) but in the end I felt the same as your DH and wanted the name I called her to be her actual name. People have different views on this, but I adore it and have not felt the need for a longer form version. We gave her the long substantial middle name so she would have other options later if she felt she needed them. She’s only 18 months old though so no idea how she feels about it!

Her nicknames are Nell Nell (her brother’s choice), Nellie Bear or just The Nell!

Of those first names I'd choose Louisa. I'm not a fan of Ava, Eloise always looks an ungainly sort of spelling to me, but I really like Helena. Does it have to be used as a MN?

I like Iris and Nell together but totally disagree with your DH: a BC is far better to give flexibility to go short or more formal.

Alma ❤️

NamingNoNames · 10/06/2026 16:14

a BC is far better to give flexibility to go short or more formal. If you are never going to be called the long version then I don't see any point.

Helena to Nell isn't obvious and Nell is usually an Ellen. Iris won't have a long BC name.

I don't like Amelia or Megan but I like Anna and Esther.

EnidVance · 10/06/2026 16:14

Amelia is just a bit dull, like Ava it’s incredibly overused.

Anna is lovely.

TequillaSunset · 10/06/2026 16:19

I would personally go with Iris and Josephine for their first names. I love them so much for twin girls.

User6761 · 10/06/2026 16:23

Love Iris, congratulations. Some suggestions -

Iris and Orla
Iris and Lydia
Iris and Maeve
Iris and Annie
Iris and Rosa
Iris and Zoe
Iris and Una
Iris and Amber
Iris and Ella
Iris and Edie
Iris and Vivienne

Edited

I know lots of people who had a "school register" name that was used on school reports etc but not day to day who then picked that version up once they were applying for jobs etc, and have kept using that into adulthood. Examples are Lottie now Charlotte, Kitty now Katherine, Ginny now Virginia, Jo now Josephine - all now moved from Lottie, Kitty, Ginny and Jo to Charlotte, Katherine, Virginia and Josephine. Also a Sophie who is now using her BC name of Sophia.

Nell is traditional as a short form of all of Ellen, Helen and Eleanor.

FlorenceLyons · 10/06/2026 16:27

You have similar name tastes to me - several of my children’s first and middle names are in your list (plus my mum’s!).

On those grounds, I’ll throw in two more of my favourite names - Florence and Mabel. Both are fab names in their own right, imo, and also go beautifully with Iris.

I don’t like either Rowan or James for girls, and don’t think either goes with Iris. I agree with a pp about avoiding names starting with the same letter for twins. I also kind of see what you mean about ‘Anna and’!

Messymumm · 10/06/2026 16:28

How about Iris and Arwen?

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 10/06/2026 16:36

Don’t use James as a middle name. It is by far the most common middle name for a boy. Awful fur a girl.
I would go with Ava if that is your dhs favourite.

ToadRage · 10/06/2026 16:37

Why not do another flower name. I think I'd be jealous if my sister was a flower and I'm not.

Iris & Rose
Iris & Lily
Iris & Daisy
Iris & Violet
Iris & Hyacinth
Iris and Buttercup

I like Rowan for a girl but I don't think it goes with Iris and please, please don't call your daughter James.

LoftyCoralBird · 10/06/2026 16:40

Iris & Josephine

i like Iris and Rose best

LoftyCoralBird · 10/06/2026 16:42

Iris & Ivy

But is there anything wrong with giving them an option? I'm always for having a Plan B in life.

I mean, had I been called Vicky, I'd be desperate to be Victoria! I really don't like Vicky, but do like Victoria well enough.

Tim, on the other hand, I prefer to Timothy, but many might not.

Iris won't have the option and if the initial is different to the known as name it can be a PITA. (Catherine/Kate etc)

Even worse is the William Christopher Smith type names where it's actually someone called Kit Smith.

I have a long name and don't use it. It has more than one diminutive. I only use one.
