Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

I called my daughter Ava Rose I think it’s very short and pretty and I chose rose for no particular reason other than I liked how it looked and sounded, which seems to be heavily looked down upon on here to choose rose just because it’s pretty and without family meaning but I don’t really understand why it matters. Rose is a filler i admit but it’s beautiful that’s why imo. Many on here always insist on giving a really clunky old fashioned middle name like Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret etc after a family member or something but not everyone needs or wants to pick such names just for the sake of a family member and to potentially make the first name look uglier.

im clearly biased because of my own child’s name but seriously don’t understand why there’s seems to be a problem with wanting a pretty middle name instead of something super significant.

No idea..It's my mums middle name. I think it's beautiful 😍

Those names are far nicer than Ava and Rose.

Catherine Elizabeth is lovely and fit for a future queen.
I don't like Ava at all and Rose is a bit wet.

Admittedly, Catherine Elizabeth is very 'safe' and classic, but it's not a name that is likely to be the Julie Anne/Tracy Jane/Emma Louise of it's generation

SwedishEdith · 06/03/2026 19:53

One of mine has it as middle name because it's her granny's middle name. And it's a lovely name. I wouldn't pick a family name if I didn't like it. I think, like Louise was (still is, tbh), it's popular because people like it. Familiar, gentle sound and flows easily from first name to surname.

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 06/03/2026 20:08

It’s just become boring. Because every Ava will be an Ava Rose or an Ava May or an Ava Grace.

Same with Olivia, Amelia, Evie, Mia, Poppy, Willow…

ainsleysanob · 06/03/2026 20:10

I don’t dislike it I just find it very ‘meh’ cos it’s been used so much. Not unlike Grace or Louise in the 90’s.

I’m not keen on middle names though unless they’re in honour of someone

Laiste · 06/03/2026 20:14

The irony of asking why people can dislike a certain name and in the same post call other perfectly nice names 'clunky' !

My opinion is that there seems to be 101 girls with Rose as a middle name where ever you go at the moment, and for that reason i would not chose it. There's nothing wrong with it but it's everywhere. It feels like the name equivalent of Mrs Hinch silvery grey furnishings ...

@bruffin , I didn't say they haven't thought about them. They are fashionable and predictable.
Why do you say am I lacking in imagination?

But my dds middle name has always been fashionable as a middle name It was my Nans middle name back in 1912, and my DMs back in 1937 and DDs in 1997. You dont seem to have the imagination to underwhy people chose names other than to be fashionable

Manthide · 06/03/2026 20:16

I like the name Rose and at least it's a proper name not like Mae. None of my 4dc have middle names - it was difficult enough choosing a first name! All my gc have 3 names so perhaps they are compensating.

mathanxiety · 06/03/2026 20:18

I agree with you, OP.

Rose is objectively a lovely name.

There are a lot of MNers who live their lives quite a distance up their own rear ends.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 06/03/2026 20:19

I think Rose is popular because it sounds pleasant, has a pretty meaning and tends to flow well after the vowelly names which are popular these days. Also, one-syllable middle names can work with any length of surname, whereas if your surname has two or more syllables, many middle names might sound clunky. With our surname, most middle names sounded "too much".

GreyhpundGirl · 06/03/2026 20:19

I'm a teacher- it's a very common middle name- like Mae/May/Mai. Lots of Avas/ Evies/ Lilys/ Gracies/Islas/ Lilahs with Rose or May as a middle name. I doubt anyone hates it, there's just zillions of them. My middle name is Louise- like most other women of my era.

My daughter has 'old fashioned' (they aren't actually but they aren't common- Diane is one) names as her middle names- both our mums died years ago- well before our daughter came along. As she was always going to be our only, it really meant something to us- to have that connection.

Nobody owes you an unusual or interesting name.

Caselgarcia · 06/03/2026 20:20

Remember it's a surname too!

Yewoo · 06/03/2026 20:21

There is nothing wrong with the name Rose. It’s a nice, pretty name. As is Ava. I can’t imagine anyone actually having strong negative opinions about either name.

Ava Rose or names of that ilk though are just very common. If that doesn’t bother you though then ignore the opinions of others.

LaughingCat · 06/03/2026 20:22

Of my NCT group, half of the girls were given the middle name Rose. It’s not looked down on…it’s just everywhere.

Zov · 06/03/2026 20:23

@Bluewales

I didn't know Rose was an unpopular middle name. (On here.) I know Mae is. (Especially spelt like 'Mae.')

Ava Rose is gorgeous. 😍

Not a very common surname. Not even in the top 70 in the UK. And unless the OP's surname is Rose, then her daughter having the middle name Rose is fine.

.

Newbie8918 · 06/03/2026 20:27

My grandmas name was Rose. Every granddaughters middle name is Rose. Jessica rose, Lindsay rose, Catherine Rose etc. There are 12 of us. I think it’s beautiful. I don’t care if people think it’s dated! Lots of interesting opinions on here that I take with a pinch of salt.

ToadRage · 06/03/2026 20:28

Rose is incredibly common as a middle name atm and I think that maybe why some people look down on it. There must be one in every generation, people my age are overrun with the middle name Louise. There is nothing wrong with wanting a pretty name. My middle name is Amelia and I love it, I think its one if prettiest names. I am fond of all my names (except my maiden name which i hated). Don't let anyone on here tell you what name you can and can't have. By all means ask opinions but don't take it to heart if someone thinks they can object your choice.

Bluedenimdoglover · 06/03/2026 20:38

Don't overthink this. It's a popular name at the moment. It's lovely. When I was born the popular middle monniker was "Mary" - because most families had a granny or favourite aunt with that name. Not a particularly pretty name, but I can't say it's done me any harm.

Edited

I'm guessing the name is Rose or May.
Those were very old-fashioned (not in a good way) when I was born.
They would have been very unusual as a middle name or a first name.

If you go to Baby names since 1904: how has yours performed? - Office for National Statistics, you will see that it has not always been popular

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 06/03/2026 20:43

My middle name is Jane, which was incredibly common in the 80s. I considered using it for my DC, as it must be rare now. But I thought they deserved their own names.

Rhubarb24 · 06/03/2026 20:45

I have an 18 year old and a 15 year old and pretty much half of girls in their classes through out the years are called Something-Rose, Something-Grace or Something-Mae. It's just bit done.
