Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

I called my daughter Ava Rose I think it’s very short and pretty and I chose rose for no particular reason other than I liked how it looked and sounded, which seems to be heavily looked down upon on here to choose rose just because it’s pretty and without family meaning but I don’t really understand why it matters. Rose is a filler i admit but it’s beautiful that’s why imo. Many on here always insist on giving a really clunky old fashioned middle name like Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret etc after a family member or something but not everyone needs or wants to pick such names just for the sake of a family member and to potentially make the first name look uglier.

im clearly biased because of my own child’s name but seriously don’t understand why there’s seems to be a problem with wanting a pretty middle name instead of something super significant.

Rose is a beautiful name. I love all flower and nature names.

Also in my family I had a wonderful great great aunt called Rose and we have many generations before her of Rosetta’s. So definitely a family name.

BeWittyRobin · 07/03/2026 04:50

I don’t understand why some actually care on others opinion on a name. Your child your choice and you choose something you like/love. With all mine I always chose a family names for middle names until I ran out I have 7 children lol and the always have two middle names that’s are hyphened. Because a) I haven’t a middle name and always wished I had one even if in my time it no doubt would have been the common Louise 🙈🤣 b) because I liked the way they sounded. So my youngest does have Rose as a middle name but it’s because my grandpas fav flower was the yellow rose so I clutched at straws as I had ran out of family names to use. So her name is Gabriella Amelia-Rose. I love it and that’s all that matters. Also just to add o was told my kids would had having two middle names growing up my older 5 are all 19 through to 14 and they like their names too xx

Meadowfinch · 07/03/2026 05:37

I love the name. To me it is beautiful and timeless. No association with dusty old relatives.

I'd chosen Vivienne Rose but then ds arrived.😁

Bluegreenbird · 07/03/2026 06:39

I knew my best friend for 20 years before I found out her middle name then have promptly forgotten what it is! They’re so irrelevant.

Ahem, some people like are known by their middle names and its the first name that is redundant 😁

Lemonyyy · 07/03/2026 07:41

I really like Rose! And I say that as someone who has a daughter with a clunky old fashioned middle name who was named for a relative 😂 I think people like to feel original when they are naming their children but pretty much everyone is coming something they’ve heard before, so just choose something you like!

Easterchicken · 07/03/2026 08:18

You can't really moan about people looking down on a name then saying a different choice makes other kids names ugly

However to answer your question makes like Ava rose
Ellie Mae
Isla Rae

Are just a bit common. there was a time where every one and his dog was called Ava rose and they were usually picked by chavs, so that might be why people might look down on them

I couldn't care less what people call their kids as long as I'm not paying for the child it makes no odds to me

It’s okay, if a bit bland.
I wouldn't choose it, or other flowery names because to me it sounds bright, cheerful, light and summer like and thats a lot of pressure, what if they want to be a goth?! Or have a naturally standoffish manner.
I met a charming young girl called Willow recently, thats a lot of pressure to be slim! And Grace needs to be calm and have impeccable manners…it’s just tempting fate to have a name with an obvious meaning I think.

This is a really weird comment about been slim just because her name is willow 🤣

deeahgwitch · 07/03/2026 08:27

Ava Rose is a pretty name.
Do you use just Ava day to day or is she always called Ava Rose @Bluewales?

Grapewrath · 07/03/2026 08:28

I think it’s just the middle name if it’s era like the days of Louise or Marie.
i almost gave 18 year old DD the middle name rose but my SIL chose it as a middle name for her dd as did several friends during my pregnancy- so I went with something else
I work in a primary school and we have had a few Ava-Roses and Ava-May as well as Ella-Rose, Lily Rose etc
I dint dislike it, it’s just very common

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 09:05

Why @Easterchicken ?
Would you not think of a Grace being graceful or gracious?
Would you not associate the name Willow with willowy (tall, slim, and lithe)?

Zennia · 07/03/2026 09:09

I think when names get too common*, they become cliché and people start to dislike them. Rose is the Anne or Louise of the current generation of young women and girls.

(To be clear, I mean "common" as in "popular", not the snooty MN sense of the word.)

Is it? Willowy means tall, slim. That’s going to be tough if you end up 5”1 and size 18!

piscofrisco · 07/03/2026 09:20

Ha well I have a Mae (first name) which is apparently the most filler ish name in the world. I don’t care. She was due in May, I particularly like Mae blossom, (the old English spelling of it), I once looked after a lovely old lady called May, and I like the silent film actress Mae West. I couldn’t car less what people thing of it really. She doesn’t meet alot of other Mae’s oddly as most people have it as a middle name.

Dahlia1234 · 07/03/2026 09:23

My DGD has the middle name Rose and it goes beautifully with her first name. I think people should call their kids whatever they like, whether it's a filler name, 'clunky' name, family name or whatever. Live and let live and never mind what other people think!

Snugs10 · 07/03/2026 09:27

My take is that subconsciously we connect it with travellers or gypsies.

TheBirdintheCave · 07/03/2026 09:29

Rose was my nanna and her mum and her great grandma etc etc. It’s my middle name after her and now it’s also my daughter’s middle name. The name has a huge significance to my family so I really dislike the assumption that Rose is always a boring filler name. No one’s ever said anything to me about it in real life though, only on Mumsnet 😅

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 09:36

@piscofrisco , do you have a link to this Mae blossom, (the old English spelling of it) please?

It's the Donna/Karen/Sharon/Tracy of today.

But as with most names they tend to go in and out of fashion.

Nothing wrong with Rose, it's quite nice.

I'm not sure there were any Karens, Donnas, Sharons or Traceys dating back to the 15th Century and beyond.

Names like Rose, (derivative of Rosamund), Alice (often Alyce in the middle ages) Mary/Margaret (derivative May), Ann, Caroline, Eleanor, Catherine, Elizabeth, etc., have endured. Others of course have more patchy renaissance - Mabel, Edith, Hilda, Agnes, Maud.

Yeah but they still go in and out of fashion, don't they?

For example 'May' is derived from 'Mary' which is one of the oldest names in the book.

It's now made a reappearance as a double barrel like 'Daisy-May', 'Lilly-May' etc.

In the same way that 'Amy-Rose' was very popular around 20 years ago.

It’s Hawthorne blossom -that was just was it was known as in days of yore :) that’s where the phrase ‘cast ne’er a clout til May be out’ comes from-basically don’t take your vest off until the Hawthorne blossoms Because that’s when winter is over.

sharkstale · 07/03/2026 10:02

It's pretty but too common.

You have entirely missed the point that the names to which you allude had no previous UK history and therefore had no history of being in and out of fashion.

I suppose it's a bit like the awful word yeah that presently seems fashionable although I don't think there's a previous history, except dialectical.

Rachelsthorns · 07/03/2026 10:06

My DD has Rosina as a middle name, after her great grandmother.
You could also have Rosalie, Rosalind, Rosanne or Rosemary if you wanted a less common version of Rose.
