Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

I called my daughter Ava Rose I think it’s very short and pretty and I chose rose for no particular reason other than I liked how it looked and sounded, which seems to be heavily looked down upon on here to choose rose just because it’s pretty and without family meaning but I don’t really understand why it matters. Rose is a filler i admit but it’s beautiful that’s why imo. Many on here always insist on giving a really clunky old fashioned middle name like Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret etc after a family member or something but not everyone needs or wants to pick such names just for the sake of a family member and to potentially make the first name look uglier.

im clearly biased because of my own child’s name but seriously don’t understand why there’s seems to be a problem with wanting a pretty middle name instead of something super significant.

Is there hatred for it? It's such a lovely name. I thought I was being original by using Rose in 2005 (due to Rose Tyler in Dr Who!) and I think now and perhaps even then it was as commonly used as Jane or Louise in the 1970s. My middle name is Louise though and I still like it, even if both my cousins and half of my friends have it as a middle name! 😁 DD1 loves her middle name too.

Ronathediva13 · 07/03/2026 10:13

Is the name Ava or Ava Rose?
I hate the trend for giving kids two first names. Nothing at all wrong with Rose as a middle name, but incorporating it into the first name makes her sound like a vacuous Love Island contestant. Also, maybe some people are still thinking of Rose West.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 07/03/2026 10:13

Both DDs have single syllable middle names (DD2 is Beth). Their first and surnames have three syllables so I think it works well. Rose I guess works with lots of other names. I considered Grace and Jean as the other options for DD2.

dailyconniptions · 07/03/2026 10:16

It's extremely unimaginative and boring, although 'pretty' in its own way. My own daughter is a something Rose and I deeply regret it. She's can't stand it either. What a waste of a fabulous opportunity to choose a gorgeous other name. I'd go Fern, Faith, Heidi, Coco or Tamsin as her middle name now.

Cetera · 07/03/2026 10:17

Middle names are so irrelevant. I suppose if you choose one it may as well be a generic filler name. No point wasting a stand out name on the middle name!

You have entirely missed the point that the names to which you allude had no previous UK history and therefore had no history of being in and out of fashion.

I suppose it's a bit like the awful word yeah that presently seems fashionable although I don't think there's a previous history, except dialectical.

🤣🤣🤣

That did tickle me.

Read it back and have a word with yourself lol, unless you're a Headmistress from the 1950s.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/03/2026 10:22

I like Rose as a middle name. There is nothing wrong with it at all except that it is very common these days. I much prefer it to May and Grace.

My younger daughter (26) almost had Rose as a middle name. I actually prefer it to the middle name we chose, but it didn’t go as well with her first name.

Bemused89 · 07/03/2026 10:26

It's just taste isn't it. Adding rose/may/Mae/Rae was a fad which loads of people did 5-10 years ago. Working in education you saw a lot of it for years which is why I think there became a back lash and doing so fell from favour because it was so common and the second name was just filler. If you like it then great though. I don't know that I would have opened up a can of worms about it though as everyone has an opinion and I would hate for a name I used for my babies to be picked over.

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 11:42

@piscofrisco , I was asking if you could provide some genuine background to your claim about the Old English spelling. It looks a bit like something you might have read on a baby name site, so if you have something of substance to back it up, I'd read it otherwise ir doesn't look genuine.
I'm guessing you are in North America.

I am well familiar with Ne’er cast a clout till May be out. The may refers to the hawthorn being in bloom.

Giddykiddy · 07/03/2026 11:50

Over use I think - it's a lovely name tho - my DD has it as a middle - it doesn't really suit her - it's a bit twee and she isn't

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 11:57

@Cetera, They are useful if you have a common surname and a common first name.
Something like Oliver Smith might be duplicated but your Oliver might be Oliver Fraser Jones while the other three are OIiver James Smith, so still duplicated.

I think a middle name is a great opportunity to use a stand out name - what if you loved Francesca but not Fran, Frankie, Chess or Chesca.
Ava Francesca Jones would be more memorable than Ava Rose Jones.

Cetera · 07/03/2026 12:03

Tbh I don’t even have one so that’s probably why they feel a bit pointless. My first and second names
are very distinctive. DH and DD do have middle names
but they never get used/mentioned. I never think about DD’s middle name.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/03/2026 12:12

I always thought that the point of middle names was to be able to give a child 'family' names but without having to be lumbered with an old fashioned first name.

All my five have three names each, so two middle names, and my youngest has Rose as her third name, because it was one of her grandmother's names (grandmother's third name actually, because the first two were so desperately dowdy and dated).

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 12:13

@Cetera , I don't see the point either unless the surname is a common one. I think my example backs it up. This is an example of now a good middle name could be useful.

Cetera · 07/03/2026 12:24

Dare is pretty cool. Really though, how often does anyone say their middle name out loud? Mostly it’s used for filling in forms I imagine.

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 12:31

I can think of people who always use the whole name but not many, and not all of us end up working in the media.

Duplicated name:

Chris Evans (actor) - Wikipedia

Middle names often get dismissed as “unnecessary extras,” but for many people like me they’re the name that truly fits. I’ve used mine for over 50 years because I love it so much that I sometimes forget I even have a first name! The only time it surprises me is booking airline tickets and seeing my legal first name. I’m so grateful I had the choice, because I absolutely love my middle name. So no, I don’t agree that middle names are pointless, and just because “Rose” as a middle name is so popular, seen as dated, or considered boring is not a valid argument against it!

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 13:08

@Butterflyvillage , unless your middle name is Rose, is it relevant?
My middle name was so naff and was a 'you can't just call her Sarah, why don't you call her Sarah Jane' job. Why did they even bother?

Yes it is relevant as I mentioned before my dd2 has Rose as a middle name and likes it. I am also arguing that middle names in general are not pointless because I have used mine my whole life and love it. Sorry your middle name is "so naff" that you hate it!

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 13:29

Oh right. You needn't feel sorry. It's just a pointless filler name that my aunt suggested. My aunt's own name would have been far better, if they really wanted to use one.
You won't change my mind about filler middle names.

I love the name Rose. It's pretty and feminine. I think it's a snobby thing to dislike it.

Or reverse snobbery!

My DC attend very posh schools and it is much embraced as a middle name amongst their friends.

The particular posters who go on about it being "boring" often suggest names I think are a bit 😬so there is an element of taste. I think where there can be a bit of snobbery is when it is a hyphenated first name, Like Macy-Rose, and that's because that kind of name is associated with being American.🙄Yet I know quite a few French people with hyphenated names as well.

Ultimately the criticism is that it is overused - a bit like Louise and Jane once were.

And so it is, but names tend to become overused because they are pretty, versatile and people like them. I can't see a problem with overused for a middle name. To me having something that compliments the first name is a good object, and Rose, like Jane and Louise, does that very well with many names.

I think it's lovely Op. I wouldn't worry. Anything not made up or yooneek is a good place to start I think!

RosesAndHellebores · 07/03/2026 09:39

I'm not sure there were any Karens, Donnas, Sharons or Traceys dating back to the 15th Century and beyond.

Names like Rose, (derivative of Rosamund), Alice (often Alyce in the middle ages) Mary/Margaret (derivative May), Ann, Caroline, Eleanor, Catherine, Elizabeth, etc., have endured. Others of course have more patchy renaissance - Mabel, Edith, Hilda, Agnes, Maud.

I agree with this.

It is kind of my "litmus" for names I consider good choices: how far back do they date.

HugoThatway · 07/03/2026 15:27

Yet I know quite a few French people with hyphenated names as well.
They're acceptable but dated in France because of the naming restrictions they used to have.

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 17:55

It's because it's so overused as a middle name. Any other girl will be Ava Rose, Ava May or Ava Grace or whatever the first name is.

My great granddaughter is called Harper Rose and I think it's a lovely name. Ignore anyone who says otherwise. If they don't like it that's their prerogative but you obviously do or you wouldn't have put it in your daughters name.

HugoThatway · 08/03/2026 17:26

@devilwoman669 , it's not in my DD's name. I don't like the name Rose.
