I don’t think my baby will ever have a name

Please help!

I have been a long time lurker but have signed up for some help. My baby boy is due in 6 weeks and we have no names. I have scrolled through thousands of names and I think they are now all becoming meaningless but it’s making me
panic about naming our little boy. Any names I do like, DH doesn’t and vice versa. We both want a name we both like.

DH likes Apollo and Dawson???
I like Jasper, Felix and August.
Both would like something less common (I know my choices are more popular at the moment but just giving an idea of sound / style I like)

Any suggestions are welcome - we probably won’t use the names I’ve given as we don’t agree on them but opinions on those welcome
too.

Thank you

Ah well each to their own aye!😁 you say tomato I say tomatoex!🤣🤣

You'll find that you'll be alone with the tomatoex.

You do know occasionally on mumsnet people can have friendly banter? Its called humour. Try it you might like it! 😁

NamingNoNames · 21/02/2026 11:55

@Liljules , Are you feeling OK? You seem to be spouting Beaulleaux. Grin

Liljules · 21/02/2026 12:06

See that's better! I knew you had it in you! Now you've cheered up have a wonderful Saturday! 😜

If I had a boy I’d call him Harris

Isn't that slang for arse?

Wasn't miserable, just deadpan. You too!

Thank you again everyone. Lots of lovely suggestions to look through.

I think my main take from this is that names are subjective. A name that most hate, some will love. A name that is too uncommon for some will be lovely and underused for others.

I’ll work on a shortlist of names me and DH at least like and go from there. As some people have helpfully pointed out, it’s the baby that we will love, and we will love their name because it’s theirs.

Your DP seems to like American type names?

When I was struggling to name my second boy I scrolled through the telegraph (?) birth announcements 🤣 I didn't end up using a name from there but it was a good insight into what people were actually naming their children.

I've put all your suggestions into a sibling name generator and it came out with this:

Boy Names:

  1. Orion
  2. Atticus
  3. Silas
  4. Ezra
  5. Sebastian
  6. Leo
  7. Everett
  8. Declan
  9. Rowan
10. Cassius

Yes, it’s cockney slang for Arse!

Thursday5pmisginoclock · 21/02/2026 14:52

please post back your final name or shortlist.

I had always loved Ollie for a boy growing up but then it became too popular so vetoed it, but now since having kids haven’t met a single Oliver at nursery/school! So don’t let popularity spoil your choice. The only name I keep coming across is Max but even that isn’t over common.

i also loved:

I’m sorry but in what planet is Jasper Apollo a good name?! In the West Country a jasper is nick name for a wasp. Any boy called that at my old school would have been torn apart for it!

NamingNoNames · 21/02/2026 16:47

A yes, @JuliettaCaeser , but there is so much more diversity now and children don't take the mick out of other children's names, and I know this because I have a nearly 4 year old and my SIL has a SIL who is a TA. Wink

surprisebaby12 · 21/02/2026 17:06

I love both of your tastes in names! There are millions of Leos and Teddys, nice to see something a bit less popular. A few ideas for you:

Mack / Macsen
Davis
Chase
Archer
Camden
Shepherd
Vander

try to get a shortlist and meet your baby before picking, it’ll be easier to name him when he’s here!

JuliettaCaeser · 21/02/2026 17:34

I would still avoid jasper if you live in Somerset

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 21/02/2026 17:41

Apollo & Dawson!
Sorry but no.
Both of you need to write a list of 5 names. Then each of you write down the 2 least favourites from the list and remove those. If you are left with 6 names you each pick your favourite. If this leaves 2 names and you absolutely cannot agree, then draw straws as to which is first make which is middle name.

LarsenBiceshelf · 21/02/2026 17:59

Just go through a baby name book, write any that either of you think would be okay on a piece of paper and stick it on the fridge. Every time you go for the milk, consider the names and eventually something will stick. Worked for me.

I think Apollo and August out of the ones so far - I've come across quite a few Felixes recently. Absolutely nothing wrong with giving your child a name that isn't in the top 100, despite what people on here say. My daughter had four Olivers in her primary class (and there were three in the other class) - nobody wants that!

How about Elwood (Woody), Diggory, Selwyn, Tobin or Thurstan?

JuliettaCaeser · 21/02/2026 18:39

To be fair I came up with some properly bonkers names when pregnant which DH did not veto! Came to my senses in nick of time. My now teens are horrified at what they were nearly called!

lottiegarbanzo · 21/02/2026 18:41

It’s the method that counts. Make lists, veto any you hate from each others’ but you have to leave ten. Discuss those 20. Narrow it to 6-8 and decide from there.

Do NOT create a situation where one person makes suggestions and the other has instant power of veto.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/02/2026 18:45

August is a really good name. Apollo is silly.

SwankyPants · 21/02/2026 18:50

We had a name through pregnancy for one of our sons. When he was born he didn't suit the name.
That night as I held him I said all the other names we had outloud and one of them fitted so that was his name.
