I don’t think my baby will ever have a name

Please help!

I have been a long time lurker but have signed up for some help. My baby boy is due in 6 weeks and we have no names. I have scrolled through thousands of names and I think they are now all becoming meaningless but it’s making me
panic about naming our little boy. Any names I do like, DH doesn’t and vice versa. We both want a name we both like.

DH likes Apollo and Dawson???
I like Jasper, Felix and August.
Both would like something less common (I know my choices are more popular at the moment but just giving an idea of sound / style I like)

Any suggestions are welcome - we probably won’t use the names I’ve given as we don’t agree on them but opinions on those welcome
too.

Thank you

You don't have to have a name picked our before they are born OP.

We had a short list of 3 for each of our DSs - 1 favourite from each of us and 1 we agreed we both liked but wasn't our favourite. We then decided which one suited them best.

DS1 it was my DHs favourite which suited him best.
DS2 it was my favourite which suited him best.

Some Scottish boys names are pretty uncommon elsewhere. Lachlan, Campbell, Murray, Innes and Torin for example.

@NiceforthedayChrist on a bike! You are very rigid on month names 🤣🤣🤣

not sure your comments were so offensive they needed to be removed though 🤔

marmaladegranny · 20/02/2026 15:01

Panic not! My DC2 was not registered until the last possible day (?6 weeks after birth) to avoid her being for ever ‘Female child Surname’. All the professionals nagged us to get a move on. Eventually one name popped up that was perfect!!

Cassian, Cosmo, Cyrus, Darius, Fabian, Jago, Leander, Oberon, Orion, Orson, Phoenix, Quentin?

NamingNoNames · 20/02/2026 15:10

Apollo - sounds like a theatre, greek god.
Dawson - genius comedian, Dawson's Creek.
Jasper - dog's name
Felix - cat's name
August - pronunciation - month or adjective?

Jasper and Felix are OK but I don't love them. The rest are pretty dreadful.

You've got nearly 3 months to find a name.

If you go to the Baby names for boys in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics page, you can download a spreadsheet showing all the baby boy names registered in 2024 and how many of each were registered.

A more user-friendly view of the data is Baby name explorer, which shows you how popular the name has been over nearly the past 30 years.

The name needs to go with the surname - try saying it out loud. Also check that the initials work.

We were in a similar position OP, the only name we both really liked was a top 3 name and that bothered me in itself. We went with it in the end and I’m pleased we did now (and more pleased that where we live it dropped out of the top 10 the year after he was born!)

One of DH’s front runners was August. I vetoed it, but I have to admit I sometimes regret not giving it more thought as I think Gus is a cute nickname for a baby/toddler.

We also liked Zander but MN told me we couldn’t possibly as it’s a fish, but then I’ve seen it suggested several times since 🤷🏻‍♀️

At this moment in time Dawson might seem like a tribute to recently deceased James Van Der Beek for a certain demographic!

Both of you sound like you’re naming a cat not a baby. Sorry I don’t mean to be harsh.

what about Jamieson, Maverick, or something common due to comeback like John?

I said that to DH about Dawson’s Creek and he’d never even heard of it 😂 but yes, timing of Dawson might not be so great.

Interesting that a few other names we’ve discussed have been mentioned. And some good suggestions I hadn’t considered too. I worry that if I leave naming baby until after he’s here I’ll choose something quickly and then have name regret like so many others seem to post about. But having a list of 3/4 is a good idea.

We struggled with boys names, had a couple we liked but didn't necessarily loved. Had a huge list of girls names. When had DS we took one look at him and came up with a completely random name that had never been on our radar. Quite common name (at the time, slightly less favourable now) but never had one in his class (there were a couple in the year above)

AfternoonTeaAddict · 20/02/2026 15:28

Don't panic too much. Ds1 wasn't named until just before he had to be registered! DH was absolutely set upon naming him after his beloved Uncle. I was very resistant.

In the end we 'compromised' and named him after DH's beloved uncle. Grin I ADORE his name now. August was one I liked too- lovely soft sounding name.

MirandaBlu · 20/02/2026 16:15

Is it a case where you can't agree on any loves, or where you each dislike the other's choices? If it's the first, I'd leave some "maybes" on your list for now; they may grow on you/him and it'll also give you a bit of an idea where your tastes might overlap. The lists don't seem a million miles apart; to me Dawson is the outlier. His choices seem a little more like specific cultural references, while yours are more classic/general.

A few more, just in case something appeals:

Alasdair
Armand
Brendan
Calvin
Ciaran
Eamon
Elias/Elijah
Emmett
Evander
Everett
Ferris
Hugh
Idris
Lionel
Mathias
Nathaniel
Nico/Nicholas

Good luck op.

ah you’ve got ages, don’t worry. I’m 36 weeks with boy #3 and we’re really struggling. Boy #1 was easy, boy #2 was tricky, and we ended up going with DH’s favourite, as I thought if it’s going to be a compromise name I’d rather one of us loved it, and then we’d semi-settled on one this time round, until DH changed his mind and we’re back to square 1 (as I really can’t get on board with his favourite this time). We’ll get there, I am hoping he doesn’t come early though 😂

NamingNoNames · 20/02/2026 17:44

What do you like about the names?
Jasper, Felix and August don't sound alike other than the number of syllables.
Apollo and Dawson don't seem to have any commonality.

Princess Eugenie has a son August, born in February.

Heartwarming 😂

Jokes aside how about Dawson, Robert or Angus?

Newsenmum · 20/02/2026 17:46

Atlas or Orion

Newsenmum · 20/02/2026 17:46

Caspian

Discoated · 20/02/2026 17:47

How about Messin or Christopher?

Newsenmum · 20/02/2026 17:47

Also op I know it’s hard especially if youve thought about it for many years, but sometimes you just have to pick one. It may help when he’s here.

ThisLoftyGoose · 20/02/2026 19:22

I wish I could convince DH to like my choices but I’m not sure I can. And I’m not a fan of his either.

I think after years of losses and fertility treatment we stopped discussing names a long time ago, and have only just started again now that I am so far along. But you have all reassured me that I have time and something will feel right when he is here. Thank you everyone x

I don’t really have any names to add but just wanted to chime in and say not to worry! It does all sort itself out and you’ll find the perfect name for him once he’s here. We really struggled to name our youngest - she’s the fifth girl in the house (blended family) so lots and lots of names were either already used or sounded too much like existing first/middle names. She was nameless for ages but we got there. I do think 99% of the time they grow into their names - and if you do get it wrong, it’s not the end of the world - I changed my DC3’s name when she was a baby as it never suited her; the ‘new’ name was absolutely right for her and everyone’s pretty much forgotten that she was ever called anything else. It’ll all work out!

I agree with this, when I had my DC I don't think any of my friends had names picked until the baby arrived. I didnt even know what sex I was expecting. We had a short list of 3 girls and 3 boys names.
DS1 ended up with our top boys name.
DS2 has one that id previously vetoed, but it was so clearly 'his' name.

From your lists I love Felix and August.
