Help I’m 39 weeks pregnant

Just now considering Phoebe… I love the nicknames Pheebs and Bea.

Would Alys work as a middle name?

My husband is not sure because he thinks of Phoebe Buffay - but I think that’s just because he doesn’t know any other Phoebes! I have a friend called Pheobe and think of her when I hear the name instead.

OP posts:

It's nice, just be aware people will mispell it a lot. I know someone who actually named her child Pheobe instead of Phoebe 🤦🏻‍♀️ despite people telling her that's not how you spell it.

Phoebe Alys is lovely.

Others ..
Alys Phoebe
Fiona Alys

Ileithyia · 27/01/2026 17:36

Phoebe is a Greek titan and one of Saturn’s moons, it’s a lovely historically rich name, with some quirky associations thanks to Friends.

I think it pairs nicely with Alys.

Berlinlover · 27/01/2026 17:37

It’s probably one of the worst names in existence. Sorry OP.

ObladiObladah · 27/01/2026 17:38

I know a little Phoebe, she’s a big character and owns the name! It’s a lovey name and I think it’s beautiful with Alys. Excellent choice.

My mother is a Phoebe and I always had trouble spelling it as a child as it has both the ph and the oe to cope with. Combining two unusual spellings by adding Alys is just a bit unfair on a small person. Love the names but sometimes you have to imagine being the person who spends their life spelling them out to people.

How many times in your life has someone else had to write down your middle name?

beigeybeige · 27/01/2026 17:47

There are so many other lovely Greek names to choose from but this one looks like Phobia to me if I’m not concentrating and the sound of it is like Feeble. neither would be great associations to give to a baby in my book.

What about Eirini or Eleni?

If your full name is on your bank account, fairly often.

Like when? Mine is and I have never have to give it to anyone to spell.

NamingNoNames · 27/01/2026 17:50

@beigeybeige , OP says they're Welsh. Eleni is Welsh word but it means 'this year'.

Hazelmaybe · 27/01/2026 17:51

I love Phoebe

NamingNoNames · 27/01/2026 17:53

@ArtTheClownIsNotAMime , might be my bank (it's one of the main high street ones) but my name is on my account as Mrs Middlename Surname.

Phoebe is the 17th most popular baby name in the UK right now and has been a popular name for many many years. You forgot to add “I think” or “My personal opinion is” to your comment or even better you shouldn’t have posted at all since you’ve got nothing constructive or nice to say.

NamingNoNames · 27/01/2026 18:15

@Cookiesandbeans , in my opinion, pretty much every post is just an opinion.

Well by commenting in the first place it’s very clear this is what my opinion is and what I think, why would I need to clarify that? Are we now only allowed to post if we like a name?

RosieCottonDancing · 27/01/2026 18:18

Phoebe is a hard no for me personally. The syllables sound weirdly random to me - why not Bephoe? 😂 Feebs is not a nickname I’d enjoy having myself.

I’d go Alys as a first name.

mamaduckbone · 27/01/2026 18:22

Lovely name! I have a beautiful great niece Phoebe.

Your comment was very rude and there are different ways of letting people know your opinion. You can do it in a nice constructive and respectful way or in a rude way. I’m sorry you don’t understand the difference.

Hello19834 · 27/01/2026 18:31

Phoebe is a gorgeous classic !
Alice too (or Alys)

Beautiful choice

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/01/2026 19:08

Phoebe Alys is a gorgeous name - love it!

Vicliz24 · 27/01/2026 19:13

I love the name Phoebe I used to work with one who was lovely. She was Bebe as a nickname.

Livpool · 27/01/2026 20:32

I love it! DS would have been Phoebe if he hadn’t been a DS.

I can never hear it without thinking “P as in Phoebe, H and is Hoebe, O and is Oebe, E and is Ebe, B as is be-be and E as is ‘ello there mate” - which isn’t a bad thing

Madcats · 27/01/2026 20:45

I have an 18 year old Phoebe. I reckon a good 10% of adults she encounters can’t spell her name correctly. It’s annoying, but she copes.

I think she has been “Feebs” for most of her teen life for her friends.

BeaLola · 27/01/2026 21:03

I like Phoebe but I love Alice - the latter for me also has a lovely family connection

If you like Bea why not Beatrice or Beatrix ?

user2848502016 · 27/01/2026 21:24

I love it, I know a couple of little Phoebes

Phoebe Alys is lovely
