Phoebe

Help I’m 39 weeks pregnant

Just now considering Phoebe… I love the nicknames Pheebs and Bea.

Would Alys work as a middle name?

My husband is not sure because he thinks of Phoebe Buffay - but I think that’s just because he doesn’t know any other Phoebes! I have a friend called Pheobe and think of her when I hear the name instead.

I love it! Not sure about the middle name. Is it Alice?

Calliopespa · 27/01/2026 09:21

Phoebe is a perfectly good name, however I really don't like it personally.

Feebs makes me think "feeble," Phoebe sounds a bit like "Feebly" and the spelling of Phoebe is always reminiscent of amoeba for me.

But those may be personal to me; it's hard for me to tell how much they occur to other people as well.

There is nothing wrong with it per se, and, if using it, I think Phoebe Alice sounds lovely - I really dislike the spelling Alys.

caramac04 · 27/01/2026 09:22

I love Phoebe, not sure about middle name Alys. I’d prefer Iris but only my opinion.

Yes it’s the Welsh spelling of Alice 😊

Could you go for Alice?

Phoebe also has me going down the weak and feeble path. Then I go Pheobe Buffay bonkers purple fluffy cardies and cats. I'd go for something stronger.

Calliopespa · 27/01/2026 09:29

LolaBumble · 27/01/2026 09:27

Yes it’s the Welsh spelling of Alice 😊

Oh well if that's the case I dislike it less. I hadn't known that ( I know a Welsh Ellis).

I thought you were just being creative! I do love the name Alice.

Tonissister · 27/01/2026 09:30

I am not keen on the name, but not sure why. It's a good classical name. I just think the ee-ee repetition sounds a bit whiney. And Phoeb sounds like feeble as pp said.

I like Alys/Alice a lot. Either spelling.

Laplandsnow · 27/01/2026 09:46

I don’t understand the love for this name. It’s awful

LifeIsA · 27/01/2026 09:48

I've always hated Phoebe. Alice/Alys is lovely though.

Cookiesandbeans · 27/01/2026 09:58

I love Phoebe . Surprised by the negative comments so far- Phoebe is usually a name that gets positive response on Mumsnet ( you can search for old name threads ).

TappyGilmore · 27/01/2026 09:58

I used to like Phoebe but it’s overused. I always think of someone I knew my own age (mid 40s now) named Phoebe, and how it would have been a reasonably unusual name at the time she was born, but then after Friends it just took off and they were everywhere.

I think Alys is pretty. Are you Welsh? Why not use a Welsh first name?

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 27/01/2026 10:00

Phoebe is a great name. Kids born in 2026 aren't going to think of Phoebe Buffay so not sure what your husband is worried about.

Yes to being welsh. We would love a Welsh middle name and like Alys, or maybe Nia 😊

Also a bit surprised about the negative response to Phoebe!

I do love Alice/Alys too and this is definitely an option for first name.

I just like the softness/gentleness of Phoebe and that there are the options of nicknames…

Personally I don't like Phoebe as I agree with previous posters, it reminds me of 'feeble', its a bit of a wet, weak name.

LolaBumble · 27/01/2026 10:05

Can picture myself calling ‘Pheebs’ up the stairs when she’s a teen

OP posts:
LolaBumble · 27/01/2026 10:05

Fair enough, hadn’t really considered the ‘feeble’ sound to it….

I love the name Phoebe, most of the Phoebe's I know are the opposite of feeble and I've never made the connection.

It's a beautiful name, in Greek mythology Phoebe was a goddess associated with the moon and intellect.

Jumimo · 27/01/2026 10:16

I have a Phoebe, “Pheeb”
or “Pheebs” now she’s a teenager. No regrets, I still love it, it suits any age. My great gran was also a Phoebe who lived to the grand old age of 100.

I MUCH prefer Hebe. More unusual too which is nice.

Care to share your kids names so I can tell you how awful they are?

Navybluecoat · 27/01/2026 10:23

I work with a phoebe and adore her
Shes sassy and takes no crap so I always think of her when the name comes up
She does get 'pheebs' a lot (mainly from me!)
It's a gorgeous name-shes one of 3 that I know (the other two are a lot younger)
I adore alice/alys-i named my own dd after my great granny alice and think it's a wonderful, classic name

See that just makes me think of the heebie jeebies!

TheGriffle · 27/01/2026 10:32

I have a Phoebe and still love it. She’s a fiery red head, far from feeble and that association never crossed my mind. I had plans to call her Bea, never happened and turns out I hate Phoebs as well, don’t mind others calling her it but not something I tend to do, she’s always just Phoebe to me.
