Help I’m 39 weeks pregnant

Just now considering Phoebe… I love the nicknames Pheebs and Bea.

Would Alys work as a middle name?

My husband is not sure because he thinks of Phoebe Buffay - but I think that’s just because he doesn’t know any other Phoebes! I have a friend called Pheobe and think of her when I hear the name instead.

I love the name Phoebe, it’s a great name & suits all ages. I like Phe as a nickname. I know very young ones, a few in their 30’s & my friend’s Grandmother was a Phoebe.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 27/01/2026 23:03

I have a (badass) Phoebe and she was almost Phoebe Alice. It’s lovely (my Phoebe is obsessed by the Greek mythological origin)

Reminds me of a rabbit with buck teeth. It’s a no from me.

Pettenell · 28/01/2026 01:36

Both Phoebe and Alys are really good names and they do sound lovely together!

Namingbaba · 28/01/2026 05:51

I find it hard not to think of Friends and find it hard to see what my impression of the name would have been without that. I’d never heard of it before Friends and I think young me thought they’d created it for the character.

Like others say though her generation probably won’t have that association although she’ll maybe have a few adults bring it up.

I'd assume Phebe was pronounced Feeb. Never seen that spelling before.

Why? How would you pronounce Hebe? Or...

My Phebe came home from school when she was little & explained to me that she has a split vowel digraph in her name. I was very impressed I wasn't taught the names of this stuff when I was at school 😀

Glebe
Thebes

Phoebe from Charmed. Kick ass woman.

Glebe
Thebes

English is not a very regular language as we know, but I think that there are more examples & more common ones than glebe, which I had to google (an area of land within an ecclesiastical parish used to support a parish priest - so I've learnt something today) & Thebes.

But anyway fortunately going by my Phebe's years of experience not many people make that mistake.

NamingNoNames · 28/01/2026 11:01

@TreadLightlyToo , Hebe, Phoebe and Thebes are from Greek, as is Phoebe, a. The other words have a fairly consistent pronunciation.

Glebe and Thebes are actually very close to Phebe though, unlike the words you posted.

I would assume that Phebe was pronounced Feeb. That it was a different spelling of Phoebe wouldn't cross my mind.

All our brains work differently, fortunately in my Phebe's 23 years of life this hasn't been much of an issue and I'm sure that if you met her and she told you how it is pronounced you would think that's odd, what silly parents she has, & then would pronounce it as requested 😀All good.

Greenfens · 28/01/2026 12:15

I love Phoebe! So much so that I have my own little Phoebe. We call her Bee, she gets called feebs by nursery teachers. My worry was popularity but so far she is the only one we know at nursery, pre school, older children’s school, baby groups etc.
I love love the name and its meaning and rich history. No regrets at all. Although I’m amazed at how many people struggle to spell it.
I realised it was the one for me actually when I was reading name threads on here, and whenever I saw anything negative about it i thought ‘that’s ridiculous’ or disregarded it etc. Any other names i was often nodding in agreement and getting put off. So I do think name threads are useful for finding our true feelings on a name!

sc0ttishlass · 28/01/2026 18:52

I have a Phoebe and over thr years have had many random comments (supermarket checkout type stuff) about what a lovely name it is. My Phoebe is a force and it really suits her. Nothing feeble at all :) I have never once regretted it. Best of luck x

PalamosPaloma · 28/01/2026 19:07

Love Phoebe, and Alys, but contrary to popular opinion on this thread, I don’t think they work that well together. You end up putting Y in there - Phoebe YAlys. Sorry!

For a welsh option I like Phoebe Rhiannon, or Phoebe Sian.

Missyousomuchmum · 29/01/2026 12:51

I absolutely love the name Phoebe. It was always on my shortlist.
I can't stand "Pheebs" but don't like the trend of putting a "s" on the end of a shortening - Molls, Holls, Tills, Rubes etc.
That's just one of my hangups.
I'm fine with "Pheeb" without the "s".
A lot of teenagers seem to like the trend though and at the end of the day it's personal choice. 😊

That's only with certain accents though surely? I think Phoebe Alice sounds fine.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 29/01/2026 13:10

I like Phoebe Alys!

The few Phoebes that I've met always seem to be of the "strong girl/woman" variety.

This is actually true in my experience too.

I am one of the "feebly" pp upthread, and, while it does make me think of the word feeble, I also would concur that the Phoebes I know (from before and after Friends, which I don't particularly associate it with!) have been quite level-headed and determined.

I still am not a fan particularly, but I would agree with this observation.

Can picture myself calling ‘Pheebs’ up the stairs when she’s a teen

We have a Pheobe in the family, she is most definitely not a weak and feeble person. Ours is quirky, arty and very much knows her own mind without being bossy. And is known as Pheebs.

I really like the whole name Phoebe Alys so if you love it go for it.

NamingNoNames · 30/01/2026 13:27

@Cojones , is she really a Pheobe? We have a Pheobe in the family
