We've found out we are having a girl. These are the current top 2. Thoughts?

Both lovely names and you're slightly ahead of the curve. I like Pearl better, but both gorgeous!

rainingsnoring · 21/01/2026 00:18

I really like Daphne and considered it for DD2, although this was many years ago now, along with Penelope. I like Greek mythological names. Both seem to have risen in popularity a lot since then. I don't know if that bothers you or not.
The thing which would put me off Daphne is the awful 'Daph' nickname or even 'Daffy', like Daffy Duck. The full name is lovely though.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 21/01/2026 02:11

Daphers 😂

4thbabynamehelp · 21/01/2026 08:27

I actually think Daphie is quite cute for a little one.

Thanks so much for all your responses, if anyone is still reading, my DH compiled his list yesterday, as I gave him the full list of 2024 baby names.
So these are also being considered... But I get the final say as he got his way with one of our sons names.

Evelyn
Matilda
Orla
Layla
Skye
Luna
Frankie/Francesca
Saoirse (both of us concerned with spelling/pronunciation on this one so might be a middle name at most)

Francesca is a lovely name. I don't like either Pearl or Daphne, both still seem so dated.

ToadRage · 21/01/2026 08:36

Dislike Daphne, no idea why just don't like the way it sounds. Pearl, i like but only as a middle name, I think its naff as a first name.

I don't know what happened there 🤷. It's late 😂.

MN please delete three duplicate posts.

Love Francesca. DD2 ended up getting this name!
I like Matilda too and quite like Evelyn, although prefer the very simple Eve.
Not v keen on Luna at all or Skye.

Frankie/Francesca is my favourite of those.

Neither, both are awful.
Edited to say I like Layla or Francesca much more.

From that list only like Francesca or a Luna. Can't stand Matilda and Evelyn has made a come back so there are loads of them. Luna is popular due to Harry Potter and Francesca runs the risk of being shortened Fran then being mistaken for Frances.

user593 · 21/01/2026 09:17

Evelyn or Orla from the new list.

millymollyminging · 21/01/2026 09:27

How about Delphine?

Whatnameisif · 21/01/2026 09:30

I would choose Daphne - I have a Daphne! We have received loads of compliments on it. I do think it's becoming more popular because until the last few years I'd never met a Daphne but now I've met several toddler Daphnes. I think it's from the era names are being drawn from at present. Maybe Bridgerton had an effect, I don't know.

I like Daphne Pearl.

I wouldn't choose Evelyn. I know about a million Evie/Eve/Ava/Eva/Evelyns. Plus I never know if Evelyn is pronounced Eve-lyn, Ev-lyn or Ever-lyn. I know children pronounced all three ways.

Layla also blends in with all the Lily/Lila/Lyra/Lola/Linas I know.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 20/01/2026 00:39

I'm getting on a bit, so I don't like either of them. They're names that I associate with my friends' mums and grans. There was a new born up the school the other day, pretty little girl, then her mum announced that her name was Olive!! It reminded me of the gormless woman with the thick glasses and buck teeth from "On The Buses" in the 70s. Poor thing 😣 . I don't know where this trend for 40s names has come from. Please let's not resurrect Barbara, Margaret, Eileen, Beryl, Gladys, Sylvia ...

Olive has been top 100 name for the last five years and still rising. I know quite a few. Sylvie is also rising but Sylvia less so (I love Sylvia).

It's 1920s names that are currently resurging. Names have an approx 100 year cycle.

Pearl and Daphne are still my faves with your updated list, although I also love Saoirse. Actually it is my DDs middle name and I kinda wish we’d used it.

sunsetss · 21/01/2026 10:56

I don't like Daphne. Pearl is ok but much prefer the first 5 of DH's list tbh.

I love the idea of Saoirse as a middle name. The meaning is so lovely and it gives that Irish connection that we would like, and the option for her to use it if she liked it.

@4thbabynamehelp , As a middle name yes. Not used enough to have the spelling and pronunciation issues.

UninitendedShark · 21/01/2026 13:17

Daphne Pearl is adorable

ginasevern · 21/01/2026 13:57

When I was growing up Daphne would be the name of a maiden aunt (and akin to Gladys or Ethel) and Pearl would conjure up the local barmaid (akin to Shirley or Gloria). So I find it hard to get my head around their new found popularity. But personally I think Daphne is the better of the two.

ClareVoiance · 21/01/2026 14:06

Daphne is nice but I think we are thinking Bridgerton not Just Good Friends.
Pearl - soap, singer, knitting.

Picking up on @ginasevern 's post, Aunt Daphne probably had a spoilt much younger sister called Olive Pearl or Shirley May.
