We've found out we are having a girl. These are the current top 2. Thoughts?

I don't know what happened there 🤷. It's late 😂.

MN please delete three duplicate posts.

MatildaRani · 20/01/2026 01:59

Pearl sounds like somebody’s 90 year old grandma. Daphne is okay.

Upanddownandupagain · 20/01/2026 02:13

I like both. Know one of each who a
aged around 6. Both lovely girls and suit their names. I admit to being a little surprised when I first heard their names, but quickly realised both names were great and wished I’d thought of them for my daughter

LivingTheDreamish · 20/01/2026 03:21

I've always loved Daphne.

Sa11yCinnamon · 20/01/2026 15:36

Daphne was my top girl's name but my partner vetoed it 😭

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 20/01/2026 15:42

Pearl

Fridgedooropen · 20/01/2026 15:43

Doesn't help you OP but Daphne and Pearl would be lovely for twin girls.

ImFineItsAllFine · 20/01/2026 15:49

I much prefer Daphne

They sound extremely old-fashioned. Have they come back into fashion again? I wouldn't, to be honest.

Yep they are coming back. Daphne is currently 150 in the name charts, it will be a top 100 name soon I think. Pearl is less popular than Daphne but I don't think it's considered old fashioned anymore.

I really like Daphne. Also Josephine and Nell. All really pretty old fashioned names. Not keen on Pearl.

amy480 · 20/01/2026 16:02

Daphne was the 3rd most searched baby girl name on nameberry last year - maybe the Bridgerton influence! it’s a lovely name.

4thbabynamehelp · 20/01/2026 16:19

It's interesting that people associated Pearl with someone's grandma. I've never met a Pearl, or heard of one actually. So the only association I have is when I fell for the name as a child after watching Starlight Express!

I still like 90s girls names like Charlotte, Emily, Lucy, Lily, Olivia, Mia, Sophie. I was born in the 60s, imagine calling your daughter Tracy, Karen, Sharon, Julie, Debbie, Diane, I hope they don't come back into fashion like the current trend for 40s names. My 4 yr old granddaughter has some unusual boys' names in her class, lots of surnames as Christian names - Carter, Hunter, Cooper, Archer, Hadley, Miller, I like all of them.

ClareVoiance · 20/01/2026 20:55

@TheSunRisesInTheEast , those names were popular in the 60s (and popular names are popular for a reason on MN). Most were nice, and still are, but they are of their time.

The term used these days is first name.

SpringBulbsPop · 20/01/2026 21:34

Pearl!!!! It’s super cute ☺️

RuthW · 20/01/2026 21:54

Both lovely. Daphne I think

Llamma · 19/01/2026 16:39

Congrats.

What are your other 3 called?

I'd love to say but it would be so outing as one in particular is quite unusual. One of them is called Cillian, all boys. We were hoping to use an irish girls name but can't find one we like that is easily pronounced in the UK.

I love Ciara

SemperIdem · 20/01/2026 23:16

I like them both! I’ve only ever met one Pearl, she is my age (late 30’s).

I actually considered both names when I was pregnant last year but ultimately didn’t use them because Daphne sounded silly with my surname, and as I’ve only ever met the one Pearl, it felt like I’d be naming the baby after her.

I went with another “old fashioned” name (flower name), which sits in the in the top 100.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 20/01/2026 23:35

I think it's difficult not to associate names with people you already know with that name. I worked with a Daphne in the 80s, she was a right battleaxe, she used to upset everyone in the office. My friend's auntie Pearl stunk of smoke, wore American Tan tights with white shoes and bright red lipstick. Funny how things stick in your mind. For younger people now having babies they won't have that negative association. Whatever you call your children, they grow into their name and you can't imagine calling them anything else.

Samdelila · 20/01/2026 23:36

Pearl

GKG1 · 20/01/2026 23:39

Sid9nie · 19/01/2026 21:03

If you live in Scotland Pearl will always be pronounced Peril.

As in it will be pronounced with its r! Youve made me realise in some English accents will be pronounced more like pehll? As that’s bad news to me!

But I love both of them - not usually something I can say about baby name threads.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 20/01/2026 23:47

I suppose scousers would say peerl 😛😆

NotAnotherOneNC · 20/01/2026 23:48

Love the name Daphne.

OneAquaGoose · 20/01/2026 23:48

I had an Aunty Daphne and thought her name was ‘Daft Knee’ until I was old enough to read it.
