We've found out we are having a girl. These are the current top 2. Thoughts?

I actually think Daphie is quite cute for a little one.

Thanks so much for all your responses, if anyone is still reading, my DH compiled his list yesterday, as I gave him the full list of 2024 baby names.
So these are also being considered... But I get the final say as he got his way with one of our sons names.

Evelyn
Matilda
Orla
Layla
Skye
Luna
Frankie/Francesca
Saoirse (both of us concerned with spelling/pronunciation on this one so might be a middle name at most)

Daphne would still be the top contender for me.

Evelyn - I find it quite bland and heard of two pronunciations for this name.

Matilda - I do really like Matilda, it is popular and love Mati as a nickname over Tilly.

Orla - cat name

Layla - prefer Lilah

Skye - nope

Luna - another cats name

Francesca - gorgeous. Also, I love Francis and Felicity

Saoirse - prounounciation may be tricky depending on where you are but pretty.

How about Delphine?

Love this

I love the idea of Saoirse as a middle name. The meaning is so lovely and it gives that Irish connection that we would like, and the option for her to use it if she liked it.

Just make sure you pronounce it right OP 😁
It often gets mangled in England (as does Orla).

Don't do this. You'll look like a pretentious prat unless you are French.

Edited

I like the Seersha pronunciation.
I think Orla sounds so much nicer in an Irish accent as the r is pronounced more clearly, but I don't think it will ever sound quite the same over here!

I like Daphne

Leavesandthings · 21/01/2026 18:08

Really like Delphine, so pretty. And Delphie is cute.

Peanutlicious · 21/01/2026 19:10

I like Saoirse as first name and Pearl as middle: Saoirse Pearl

ImFineItsAllFine · 23/01/2026 15:31

Daphne still my favouurite after seeing the longer list.

I'd love to say but it would be so outing as one in particular is quite unusual. One of them is called Cillian, all boys. We were hoping to use an irish girls name but can't find one we like that is easily pronounced in the UK.

what about Fiadh - pronounced Fee-ahh - means little deer / wild spirited

AgentPidge · 24/01/2026 20:24

Daphne.

Pearl would sound like Pell where I come from.

Patchmelinda · 25/01/2026 00:13

Llamma · 24/01/2026 20:21

Fear pronounced in an English accent sounds quite like Fia(dh) apparently. That’s an objection that’s often mentioned on these threads anyway.

ClareVoiance · 25/01/2026 12:33

@Llamma , Fiadh gets said as Fee-uh in a lot of accents.
fear [fɪə]

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 25/01/2026 12:38

My 4 year old granddaughter has a friend called Fia in her class, I commented to her mum what a pretty name it is ... she said it's Thea!! (another pretty name)

4thbabynamehelp · 25/01/2026 16:16

I really like Fiadh, I think it's pretty. I'm just not sure if I'll get continuous confused looks as most people in the UK have never heard of it and it sounds so much like Thea.
When we had Cillian my DH convinced me that most people would say it right, that everyone would know Cillian Murphy etc. Well he was right ,most people do know Cillian Murphy but they think he is Sillian Murphy! I got so many confused faces and mispronunciations.
Interestingly men were usually fine with it as there are lots of famous football and rugby players that are Cillian/Kylian.
Anyway my long winded point being... it caused me a lot of stress with a baby, I felt I'd made a mistake. I love his name now he's older, but think I'd prefer a simpler start next time.

I hope they don't call your boy Kill! 😱

Patchmelinda · 25/01/2026 19:39

I’m in Ireland and Cillian is very popular, but Cill isn’t usually used as a short form😁
It means church though, not kill, hence all the place names, Killarney, Killkenny etc.

No they don't. Attempting to find fault with my existing son's name isn't really appreciated.

I didn't mean to offend, I like his name, just being playful, sorry 💐

No worries. Sorry, I'm probably a tad sensitive over his name as I had so many issues with reactions when he was small. It's probably why I'm leaning away from Irish names this time (unless it's easily recognisable!)

They sound extremely old-fashioned. Have they come back into fashion again? I wouldn't, to be honest.

They are having a moment but to me they are those kind of names that, when they went out of fashion, everyone was thinking "what were they thinking?!"

I'm afraid I still kind of think that.

Daphne is quite a heavy, unglamorous sound, but then I don't like names beginning with the heavy "d" sound generally - especially not when it is "duh" (which this isn't really).

Pearl is marginally prettier, it's a nice association but again not an especially nice sound to me. One heavy syllable.

cocopopps75 · 25/01/2026 20:29

I love the name Caoimhe

Evelyn- boring
Matilda- love
Orla- like
Layla- like
Skye- boring
Luna- cat
Francesca/Frankie- like
Saoirse- love

Calliopespa · 25/01/2026 20:45

I like Seersha too.

I think it's prettier than Pearl or Daphne. Daphne also makes me think of Naff.

I also love Francesca, Matilda and Evelyn.

I think Skye often works nicely as a middle name. Any of those four with Skye as a MN would be lovely I think, although you would have to like the sibilance of Saoirse Skye. Matilda Skye, Francesca Skye and Evelyn Skye I really like.
