Ottilie, Octavia...thoughts on these please, and what else? I don't want anything made up, or too modern, or too popular, however pretty (eg Olivia).

Ophélie is nice - if you like the sound of the name Ophelia but not the idea of naming her after Hamlet's crazy girlfriend it is perfect! Lots of girls are called it in France and for me it is a magical name because I truly have never met an unkind Ophélie. Always sweet, kind girls!

My favourite, though is from your own suggestion and is... Octavia - where is it from and what does it mean??? It is really a pretty name for a little girl (she'll be the one in pigtails, curls and ribbons) but for woman I think it is such a sexy and sophisticated name (she'll be the one in high heels and an incredible cocktail dress ordering champagne with her husky voice)!

But I thought Odile was the name of the baddie in Barbie and the..

BagelBird · 13/06/2008 20:09

Surely Octavia is an old traditional name to use for your 8th child.. bit like Septimus and err hmm can?t think of the others but there are some aren?t there???

BagelBird · 13/06/2008 20:11

Although I also imagine that Octavia is a bit like Octave in music - the sense of rising beyond and above and yet the same.. like a musical "mini me". Geez I know what I mean, I am not drinking and I am raving like a loony tonight!

Has Ornella been suggested yet? Ornella Muti was a model or actress in the 80s.

Why is Ophelia too tragic but not,for example,Juliet?

cadelaide · 13/06/2008 22:17

Emilia, she killed herself.

No-one says "oh no I couldn't name my daughter after someone who killed herself" about Emilia, do they?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/06/2008 22:25

Which Emilia?

indiemummy · 13/06/2008 22:43

Olive is sooo nice.

Zahrah · 13/06/2008 22:44

What about Orchid, Órla, Onóra -(pro)Honor.

cadelaide · 13/06/2008 22:48

Desdemona's Emilia.

Or did Iago kill her? Whatever, all pretty tragic.

I just don't get why everyone trots out the "oh no, too tragic" line about Ophelia in particular, whilst other "tragic" Shakespeare women are deemed OK.

cadelaide · 13/06/2008 22:49

Love Ottilie, btw.

Octavia OK, but makes me think of the first (and only!) Jilly Cooper book I ever read.

Lionstar · 13/06/2008 22:52

I have come across and Orianne and an Orpheé (actually not sure which e has the accent) - both were bubbly and fun characters who left a lasting impression!

duchesse · 13/06/2008 23:02

Lionstar- You know an Orphée as well! I know an 11 yr old one in Normandy.

Ophelia is a beautiful name. The character in Hamlet was a very loving, sensitive woman. She was blasted by the mess around her. Her madness was a reflection of that. And it's not concluded that she committed suicide either.

And my DD is Ophelia.

husbandbeater · 13/06/2008 23:12

A very beautiful name Winky

There are a lot of "Ophelia"-bashers on MN.

teafortwo · 13/06/2008 23:34

And she is always surrounded by flowers!

aaaawwww Winkywinkola- I had never thought of it like that or I would have called my daughter Ophelia too!!!! He he he!!!! I won't tell you what her name actually is as it doesn't begin with O and I am 100 percent sure it will be bashed!

Millais's Ophelia is beautiful...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophelia_(painting)

It tells me all about life - All lifes beauty and pain in one image.

"Blimey, thanks everyone. Still keener on Ottilie and Octavia than anything! What's the betting I end up calling her something completely different...five long months for me to change my mind...anyone picked a name at this stage that they have stuck with? "

I had a boy's name picked out at 12 weeks. DH loves it too. 26 weeks now and still with it. Shame we can not agree at all on girls' names, although 20 scan showed boy, we want a contingency girl's name.

Peapodlovescuddles · 14/06/2008 12:11

I have an 11y/o Ottilie, middle names Violet Gracie. We sometimes call her Tilly. I love the name
