Ottilie, Octavia...thoughts on these please, and what else? I don't want anything made up, or too modern, or too popular, however pretty (eg Olivia).

I know what you mean about Octavia. I really like it...but I worry it sounds a bit trying-too-hard...though surname will be suitably bland and boring and will absorb anything unusual or fancy. On the OTHER hand I was at school with an Anastasia Jones which sounded a bit much.

Quinty, are you by any chance Scandinavian? You clever lot. Odessa is nice. There are loads of brill O names, it seems. Still keen on Octavia but have reservations as above and don't know what it would be shortened to...

castille · 12/06/2008 11:10

Octavia would probably get shortened to Tavie, unless you make it Very Clear from the start that you don't approve!

GreenGodess · 12/06/2008 11:11

Octavia is a hell of a name to live up to.

We have one where I live the parents are super pompous and confident and would suit the mother but the little girl is very shy and quiet and just doen't quite match.

Ophelia is just to tragic. olivia too popular, the rest just a bit odd.

Why an O?

motherinferior · 12/06/2008 11:12

O
as in The Story Of O

Bet you won't get many of those in the playground.

BroccoliSpears · 12/06/2008 11:12

toobusytothink · 12/06/2008 11:14

Friend has called their girl Ottilie but usually call her Lottie. Not sure I'm a big fan. Think it's German and the female equivalent of Otto so I think it's quite harsh sounding. But it's such a personal thing so if you like it, I'm sure it will suit her beautifully.

LuLuBai · 12/06/2008 11:17

Yes Odile is lovely.

I think Octavia would almost certainly get shortened to Tavi but I don't mind that. Think it's quite pretty actually.

LadyThompson · 12/06/2008 11:18

GG, is Octavia really that ghastly? (It may be - I have lost all perspective about this names lark!) Both me and DP are musical and like the musical connotations, rather than the poncy ones, especially as her surname won't be something like Hawkington-Smythe. Why the letter O? Well, I noticed that at least three of the names I liked best began with O, so I thought I'd see if there were any others. As to mentioning the story of O, maybe I can call this kid O for short. I actually quite like that....
