Friend is looking for new and unconventional girls names so I suggested Nova - what do people think?

For a baby cat or dog - yes. For a baby human - no.

Whatifitallgoesright · 18/11/2025 11:02

It will always be associated with a violent terrorist attack so maybe not.

IsoldeWagner · 18/11/2025 11:02

Wasn't it the name of that music festival in Israel where all those young people were tortured, abducted and murdered?
So it would be a no from me

MidnightPatrol · 18/11/2025 11:04

Increasingly popular and now in the top 100.

579 baby girls were called Nova in 2023.

I’d not make that connection.

I like it.

Firstly because it reminds me of Sundays as a child, walking to the newsagent with my father to pick up a fabulous weekly magazine titled Nova.

Secondly it’s the name of one of the Bridge Farm clan’s twins in The Archers (Radio 4) and I’m looking forward to hearing how she and her sister Seren evolve in the ongoing story.

Thirdly it sounds strong and distinct - I think it would be an enjoyable name to bear.

So it’s a yes from me. Or would be if people’s perception of it were not now forever tainted.

Arlanymor · 18/11/2025 11:07

Makes me think of a Vauxhall Nova - although if you weren't around between 1983 and 1993 you probably wouldn't make the connection.

IsadoraQuagmire · 18/11/2025 11:10

I immediately think of Nova Pilbeam, though I don't suppose anyone else would. I've never liked her.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/11/2025 11:10

As above my first thought was the car.

Toottooot · 18/11/2025 11:11

Tacky to me - also reminds me of a boy racer souped up Nova.

That was my first thought too! 🥺

dairydebris · 18/11/2025 11:12

No.

A lot of people will connect it to terror and violence.

KarriTreeSullivan · 18/11/2025 11:48

No, Nova music festival, is the first thing I thought. It'd be quite nice otherwise.

FanSpamTastic · 18/11/2025 11:58

Reminds me of the car - they stopped using the name because in Spanish it sounds like “no go”.

Outside9 · 18/11/2025 12:08

I like it personally. It's unique.

It makes me think of Nova Scotia

Daaaaahling · 18/11/2025 12:11

To me it feels really corporate. Like the name of the evil company in a dystopian sci fi film.

I'm sure that if I knew a little girl with this name it would grow on me. But as I feel right now, I don't like it.

TigTails · 18/11/2025 12:13

I’m not sure I’d use it but as creative names go it’s not the worst option.

queenmeadhbh · 18/11/2025 12:13

Champagne Super-

It's not unique, pp said 579 baby girls were named Nova in 2023.

Really?

I've never even heard of it used as a name.

It sounds like a brand name to me, of something vaguely functional, like period pants or a walk-in bath for elderly people.

BedtimeBeliever · 18/11/2025 12:39

What about Nola?

Calliopespa · 18/11/2025 12:40

BedtimeBeliever · 18/11/2025 12:39

What about Nola?

Or Nora?

Though I had a book as a child about Nora the mouse, which I guess was supposed to be a word-play on Gnawer.

PTown · 18/11/2025 12:41

It means “no go” in Spanish.

CherryPinkAppleBlossomWhite · 18/11/2025 15:20

I learned to drive in a Vauxhall Nova in the 1980s, so I associate the name with the car.

It also seems to be a bit of a faddy name, which means it will date badly.

It's a no(va) from me.

Radiatorvalves · 18/11/2025 15:24

My cousin has a Nova. I don’t think many (any?) of the wider family are that keen on it. It’s a no from me.
