Friend is looking for new and unconventional girls names so I suggested Nova - what do people think?

I prefer Seren

Showing my age / terrible taste in trash TV but it seems to be quite a popular name on Teen Mom on MTV. So quite American and maybe not the classiest choice? I sort of assumed it was a modern form of Neveah

I also love that show, it's my guilty pleasure. One mom has a Stella and a Nova, both names space/star themed

Stella is a name that I can only ever mentally envisage being screeeched!

I like it! Mumsnet notoriously have a hard time with any names that aren’t deadly dull.

i chose a slightly unusual name for my little girl. Non traditional name and I guarantee MN. Would hate it whereas in real life we have got so many compliments.

I’d go for it

Squirrelmirrel2 · 19/11/2025 16:49

I'm not keen personally but my friend has a Nova and it's a perfectly nice name and fits in with a lot of names of this generation. If I liked it I'd use it.

LuluH82 · 20/11/2025 07:17

I know two. One is about 26 the other 7. There are others out there.
side note, I got slated when my eldest was born. people said “you can’t call a baby Elsie”. She’s 20. Now there are so many- little ones especially. Same happened to my mum who had a “daisy” 38 years ago. Again, it became a popular little girls name in time. It’s hard to predict if your name wont become mainstream.

SparklyCardigan · 20/11/2025 07:21

I didn't make the connection until the next poster explained. I don't like it as a name though.

I think that is slightly different though because both Daisy and Elsie were out of fashion/old lady names for some time, but not unheard of, whereas Nova is not a name I have heard before.

To me it sounds like a brand name, and oddly enough in the news last night an article on UPFs mentioned a Nova food rating scale.

That said, it isn't a horrible sound and, given I am not a fan of "name neologism", I think it is not a bad name on the whole. I can see how it might sound fresh and appeal to people who are bored of traditional names which I am not.

It was actually the name of the baby’s great grandmother. I just looked it up and it was used in the Victorian times right up to the 1930s when it went out of fashion. Food for thought.

GetToHeaven · 20/11/2025 09:14

I’ve met quite a few over the last few years. I don’t like it personally but clearly lots do.

Oh that's really interesting. I've never heard it and it has a really modern sound to me!

winterbluess · 20/11/2025 09:36

Quite popular in america

Whatifitallgoesright · 18/11/2025 11:02

It will always be associated with a violent terrorist attack so maybe not.

I had to google this (I knew about the attack but didn’t know it was called nova music festival) everyone I know refers to it as October the 7th.
I worked in a school and there was a couple of Novas just sounds like a regular name to me.

Its sad to say most tragic incidents are forgotten after years (except big ones like 9/11) and I highly doubt her classmates would think of this

CruCru · 20/11/2025 10:54

Beachtastic · 18/11/2025 11:11

That was my first thought too! 🥺

And mine.

FettleOfKish · 20/11/2025 11:07

A car. An attack at a music festival. One of the babies on Teen Mom. Probably niche but a dingy guesthouse in Jersey (formerly called Isis).

It’s a no from me.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 20/11/2025 11:08

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/11/2025 11:10

As above my first thought was the car.

I used to love my Vauxhall Nova! Most reliable car ever.

LittleGreenDuck · 20/11/2025 11:14

I went to school with a Nova back in the 80/90s. It was very unusual then and I've not met another since. I quite like it. Though, after my former schoolmate, my initial thought would be of a Vauxhall Nova (coincidentally also my first car).

mugglewump · 20/11/2025 15:05

Champagne Super Nova

TheSandgroper · 21/11/2025 05:00

Nova Peris. Amazing woman. Say yes.

JMSA · 21/11/2025 05:24

IsoldeWagner · 18/11/2025 12:32

It's not unique, pp said 579 baby girls were named Nova in 2023.

That hardly makes it Emily or Charlotte.

Elektra1 · 21/11/2025 06:57

Sounds like a small car.

staringatthesun · 21/11/2025 07:07

I know a baby Nova, which has made the name grow on me, but I don't love it.A PP mentioned the fictional Archers twins and I'd say, Seren is a much nicer star related name. FWIW, didn't associate it with the Israeli music festival.

dollyblue01 · 21/11/2025 07:07

I know a nova she does suit it, but did originally think it was an odd choice of name.

firstofallimadelight · 21/11/2025 07:11

i know a baby Nova big sis is Luna love both!

FreshDoughDaily · 21/11/2025 07:16

I'd say it is not a good name for a baby as the Nova is the name of the local leisure centre where I live.
Swimming lessons at the Nova.
The Nova has a new fitness class.
