Friend is looking for new and unconventional girls names so I suggested Nova - what do people think?

It reminds me of a model of car - think it was a Vauxhall that had this model name.

I have both boy and girl Novas in my school year at work. Both lovely kids so I have nice associations. My first 2 cars were Vauxhall novas. I fancied myself as a bit of a girl racer lol, but even so I don’t think of that and had never made the terrorist connection.

I think it will work well in America but not really in the UK

FeelTheRush · 22/11/2025 01:21

Don't love it - sounds like a brand name.

Wasn't it the name of that music festival in Israel where all those young people were tortured, abducted and murdered?
So it would be a no from me

It is a particularly horrific, sustained and sexually sadistic attack. Please don't name your daughter that.

EmeraldDreams73 · 27/03/2026 17:09

Vauxhall Nova to me, so it's a hard no even without the upsetting festival connotations these days.

amy480 · 27/03/2026 19:44

I know 2 baby Nova’s and a 3 year old Nova. I wouldn’t consider it unconventional but I do think of it as quite a modern, trendy name in that it’s grown in popularity in recent years. Similar vibe to Luna, Aria, Aurora.

SnowFrogJelly · 28/03/2026 01:18

Sounds like a car

I don't get your point. Other people having a name doesn't mean it's not unique.

E.g. I know other people in the world have my name. But I've never met anyone in my life that has the same name as me.

Therefore your name is not unique.

Unique means one of a kind.

Liz1tummypain · 28/03/2026 01:24

I had a wonderful Nova in the eighties. Sadly it was stolen one day when I parked it in a car park by Havant train station..I lost lots of great cassettes including Crowded House and Prefab Sprout. If you want your daughter to be a great little runaround with perfectly smooth gears , probably no central locking, otherwise very economical, then a Nova is what you want.

mathanxiety · 28/03/2026 01:30

I know a couple of Novas, aged under three.

One has a brother Ezra and sister Aria, and one has a sister Isla. I think the name Nova fits well with that sort of name - pleasant sounding, modern sounding (notwithstanding Ezra is an OT prophet) but easy to remember and pronounce/ spell, and not surnames.

I think k the number of people who would recall the name of the tragic music festival without googling is less than .01% and in fact I suspect some of the people who have mentioned it on this thread googled it.

I like it personally. It's unique.

It makes me think of Nova Scotia

It’s not that unique. We have 3 novas in 2 consecutive year groups in the school I work. 2 girls, one boy.

Stripperyone · 29/03/2026 11:37

If you like astrological names I guess it is good, siblings can have a theme for that quite easily.

I know two Novas.

One's a stripper I worked with some years ago.

The other is a husky.

It suits them both fine.

Therefore your name is not unique.

Unique means one of a kind.

That isn't what is generally meant on these threads by unique names though.

It's used as a synonym for highly unusual.

I’d not make that connection.

Me neither
