Friend is looking for new and unconventional girls names so I suggested Nova - what do people think?

Not sure. I don’t know anyone in the US or Canada who has this name (I’m from there so not just I know a few people or have been on holiday there).

From what I’ve seen it’s in the top 100 names for the US last year, but as you live there you I must be wrong

Treylime · 18/11/2025 17:28

Reminds me of my first car.

BoleynMemories13 · 18/11/2025 18:40

It's not my style at all but I also wouldn't think it's what your friend is looking for. Nova is a modern fad name which is rapidly rising up the charts. It's not unusual anymore and will date terribly.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/11/2025 19:14

There's some lovely names from constellations/astrophysics, some from Greek or Norse origin that she could consider.

Cassiopeia
Astra
Astrid
Danica
Lyra
Elara
Seren
Vega

No you probably aren’t wrong. I am from there I don’t live there anymore but haven’t heard the name ….maybe it’s a new thing.

I think of a supernova, as in an exploding star. It's pretty and along the same lines as naming a child Star, Seren, Stella or Luna. I get the music festival connection but not convinced that makes it an innapropriate name.

LBFseBrom · 18/11/2025 22:25

It's a car or a virus. No thanks.

RowOfRunners · 18/11/2025 22:33

Reminds me of a big pharmaceutical company.

I think in fairness that's Noro isn't it?

I think you are right.
It is a car though.

However, now I know it is not a virus :) , I looked it up and Nova is a star, which I should have known being as there was a song about a super one.

VikaOlson · 18/11/2025 23:55

I do think it's cute but I've met loads recently!

I like it personally. It's unique.

It makes me think of Nova Scotia

It is not a bit unique (well, certainly the word isn't). It's been around for ever; it is the Latin word (feminine) for "new." Nova Scotia is "New Scotland." See also the phenomenon of the "new star" (nova) in astronomy.

This had already being discussed with other pedantic users on this thread.

weeanniee · 19/11/2025 01:46

I have a Nova she's 3... named after a supernova my sister was space obsessed and she sadly passed before my Nova was born.

Yes she gets Nova scotia as a nickname and yes it also reminds me of a car and her surname is also a car name! None of this matters we all love her name and so does everyone else. Her big brothers teacher just had a baby and also called her Nova

Showing my age / terrible taste in trash TV but it seems to be quite a popular name on Teen Mom on MTV. So quite American and maybe not the classiest choice? I sort of assumed it was a modern form of Neveah

You'd never heard the word Nova?

Yes of course I've heard of it. But as a name, that's where I've heard it.

I've heard of lots of words. Not all of them should be used as names.

Weird that you'd think it was a version of Nevaeh though!

Namechangedforspooky · 19/11/2025 09:11

My first thought was Vauxhall but having said that I like it as a name!

No, not a version of Neveah; in the same ilk. Class-wise.

Maybe I should have said a modern version of Neveah 'etc' is that clearer? Like Abcde and Younique and Salleigh.

Calliopespa · 19/11/2025 09:36

CurlewKate · 18/11/2025 16:53

Not terribly popular then, considering around 300000 baby girls were born in 2023!

It is still far more than I'd have expected, as I've never heard of it as a name.

I'm not really a fan of non-traditional names generally so I'm probably a bit stiff and not a good person to gauge, but as far as names I've never heard of go, it probably is one I can see sounds quite cute and not twee for a grown woman.

I'm not particularly familiar with the car though, which might be influencing that. Rings a vague bell, but I'd never have made the connection without others pointing it out.

In fairness, there is none of the backwards spelling gimmick: it is what it is in that sense,

KilliMonjaro · 19/11/2025 09:45

Makes me think Champaign Super
How about Seren instead op? On a star theme…

True. It just strikes me as an American 'trendy' name because I only ever heard it from trash TV. That's really all I was trying to say

SnowFrogJelly · 19/11/2025 09:52

It is on the Archers!
