Yea or nay as a middle name for Leo?

Looking for something a bit unusual to balance out a short popular first name. Love Zebedee but is it too much?

Family names not an option. Feel free to suggest other ideas (3 syllables or more ideally as surname is also short). TIA

It was a kids show with a rabbit called Dylon who was rather laid back, a cow called Emitruide, Brain the snail, Dougal the dog, my fav, and Zebedee who was like something out a jack in the box, on a spring.

Dylan, Ermintrude, Brian.

🤣🤣🤣 I was thinking I had something up with Dylan but couldnt figure it out, Brian - oh well, 10/10 for anyone who can get Ermintrude on a spelling test.

From Winnie the Pooh, 'my spelling is wobbily, its not bad spelling, it just wobbles and the letters get in the wrong places'

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 01/11/2025 11:53

Excellent thread. A ludicrous name to kick it all off. Then the inevitable and reasonable point that the name’s strongly associated with a springy moustachioed character in an iconic kids’ TV show. Then, predictably, posters appear to bemoan people following the herd. Then some biblical names archeology. Marvellous stuff.

OP, go for it as a middle name if you want to. But don’t be surprised if your son resents the choice and avoids admitting to it whenever possible.

SayLessPan · 01/11/2025 12:03

And then The One True Poster - Superior To All Others - appears to tell us all what insignificant insects we are for commenting on a names thread on MN. Because you only need their one opinion, OP. 😂

And Florence too, the only human character. IIRC Dylan was based on Bob Dylan, in that he was always a bit stoned.

Nobody under the age of 60 will have heard of Magic Roundabout and the kids of today won't bully because of a name.
I know this because I'm a teacher and a mother, and my children are called Splodge, Biscuit amd Brunch. They've never been teased.

Woah there! I’m under 60, my husband is only just 50 and he immediately goes to Magic roundabout if he hears the name Zebedee!

youll be handing me a bus pass next!

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 12:22

@Needspaceforlego , I've been looking in the cupboard for some shoe dye, so Dylon popped out like a jack-in-the box and alerted my brian.

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 12:34

@LoveSandbanks , my post was a joke. I'm not 60 and don't have a child called Biscuit.

There are lots of Z names where I am (Zac, Zayn, Zara, Zubair etc), and I know a Zebi. I never made the connection with The Magic Roundabout. His parents are from Pakistan.

No5ChalksRoad · 01/11/2025 12:34

It’s very try-hard, “how can we be different??” sounding. Don’t saddle him with this.

pp suggestion of Leo Sebastian is best. Dignified, not weird.

MeridaBrave · 01/11/2025 12:46

I used to joke to DS2 that it’s his real name (it’s not). Prefer the Hebrew version, less Magic Roundabout (think Zebedee is the Greek form) eg, Zebediah or Zevadyah.

My post was also somewhat tongue in cheek 😜

Clearly we’re both lost in translation!

Same here. Perhaps Dougal would be a better choice 🤣🤣

As well as the dog it makes me think of Father Ted as well. I don’t mind the name though.

WaltzingWaters · 01/11/2025 12:56

I’m mid 30’s and never really watched The Magic Roundabout but it was my first thought. But I do love the name Zeb.

Zebediah makes me think of weird families in Arkansas who homeschool all of their fifteen children.

RaininSummer · 01/11/2025 12:58

Far too much. It's a cat name or magic roundabout. What about Zachary.

MaloryJones · 01/11/2025 12:59

MagpiePi · 01/11/2025 08:35

…time for bed!

lol

Years and years ago when the old phone boxes had phone directories in them, Me and my bored friends found a Mr Zebedee. . You can imagine the rest.
He went ex-directory in the end the poor sod

Sterlingrose · 01/11/2025 13:00

Bloody ridiculous. Change your own name to zebedee if you think it's such a great name. Don't make a laughing stock of your child.

Moreteaandchocolate · 01/11/2025 13:02

I mean middle names aren’t used often, so it’s fine, but not my cup of tea. Leo Zachary is far nicer imo.

It reminds me of movies when someone is getting married and their full name is revealed and the camera focuses on the guests all looking at each other with a side eye at the weird name reveal, and the bride/groom cringing. (It’s nearly always the groom).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/11/2025 13:34

So i remember The Magic Roundabout, but I am mid 50s. From wiki it appeaes that there have been several relaunches, most recently in 2010. That is still ages ago. Zebedee is a fine name! DD has a Zebulon in her class, known as Zeb.

Yes that’s what thought - try hard to be different sounding

LadyFriend · 01/11/2025 13:41

It reminds me of this song. I know it’s slightly different, but still….

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
My, oh my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It's the truth, it's actual
Ev'rything is satisfactual
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day, yes sir!

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
My, oh my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It's the truth, it's actual
Ev'rything is satisfactual
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, feeling this way

Mister Bluebird's on my shoulder
It is the truth, it's actual... huh?
Where is that bluebird? Mm-hm!
Ev'rything is satisfactual
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay
Wonderful feeling, wonderful day!

Only a few years ago posters said that about Sebastian - that it’s a ‘posh’ name and ‘pretentious’ and look how mainstream it’s become?!

roshi42 · 01/11/2025 13:45

I was just reading a book with a main character Zebedee, nn Zeb, and actually really liking it. Previously it’s not something I would have considered. Z is a cool middle initial to have! And middle names really are just an extra initial when needed. He need never admit to it if he doesn’t like it!
