Yea or nay as a middle name for Leo?

Looking for something a bit unusual to balance out a short popular first name. Love Zebedee but is it too much?

Family names not an option. Feel free to suggest other ideas (3 syllables or more ideally as surname is also short). TIA

@softlyfallsthesnow , Zeb Soanes .

SayLessPan · 01/11/2025 10:10

See my link above, @EleanorReally. People are speaking as if it was invented by the BBC and has never been heard of outside that.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 01/11/2025 10:11

It’s reminds me of skibbedy toilet

Beamur · 01/11/2025 10:11

I like it a lot. I think you can have fun with a middle name.

BatchCookBabe · 01/11/2025 10:12

No.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/11/2025 10:12

I like Zeb. I know a couple of Zebedees (both go by Zeb) and the Magic Roundabout connection isn't made by anyone anymore (any more than Dylan is). As others have said, it's a Biblical name (both the Zebs I know are from quite religious homes) and has a long and established history of being a name, far better than some of these made up 'yoonique' names.

MorningFresh · 01/11/2025 09:28

This. Why saddle your kids with jokey sounding names?

This. ^ Why would anyone do this to their child?

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 10:13

... don't think he is likely to be teased over a middle name anyway.
He'll get teased, but it'll be up to him to handle it. It will probably go in his favour.

But I'm a bit worried it comes across really try-hard/OTT as some PPs have said. Call him Leo James like all the other Leos.

mystepballchange · 01/11/2025 09:20

Oh OK, so no one can call their child a name because you watched a programme with someone who shared that name.

Do you not realise how fucking ridiculous you sound?

Where did I ever say that? That's about as fucking ridiculous as someone claiming that nobody would have watched something if it had been broadcast after they were born.

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 10:17

We didn't use the names Joe, Ben and Sam because of Joe 90, Ben 10 and Fireman Sam.

Nope! But then it’s my Auntie’s cat’s name!

Your auntie has great taste in cat names!

I have no idea what the magic roundabout is, but Zebedee is a ridiculous name.

It reminds me of the name pronounced Absidee, spelt Abcde. 🙄🙄

@wandawaves, @EleanorReally , @BatchCookBabe , It's a name from the New Testament. He was the father of the ridiculously-named John and James.

So what? Just because a certain name is from The Bible, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a great name to give your child!

I can't discuss this with you, if you can't see the difference between calling a child John or James, and calling him ZEBEDEE!

!

crazycrofter · 01/11/2025 10:21

I know a Zebedee, now upper primary age. I was dubious when he was named that, but now it seems to suit him. As far as I know there’s been no teasing. He goes by the name ‘Zeby’. I’m guessing he’ll be a Zeb when he’s a bit older.

LatteLady · 01/11/2025 10:24

Oh dear, now I feel very old as I remember Zebedee Tring as a small character in The Archers when I started to listen in the 1960s... Seriously @dyma it is up to you but I think it is a heavy burden to place on someone, especially when it is read out at a wedding and no one knew what his middle name was...

I didn't say it wasn't from the new testament or whatever. I just said it's a ridiculous name.

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 10:29

I didn't say you didn't @EleanorReally, but why do you think it's ridiculous?

@LatteLady , he might not get married.

DiscoBeat · 01/11/2025 10:34

BOING!

Pices · 01/11/2025 11:23

I think it depends on where you live. In leafy North London it would be fine as there are all sorts of less common names. Where it might veer into ‘try hard’ is that it’s a name with very heavy religious connotations and if that’s not your intent it’s all a bit odd?

It was a kids show with a rabbit called Dylon who was rather laid back, a cow called Emitruide, Brain the snail, Dougal the dog, my fav, and Zebedee who was like something out a jack in the box, on a spring.

It was broadcast just before the 6pm news and marked the end of childrens TV for the day, hence the Time for Bed comments.

I'm sure there was a feature lenght film a few years ago.

dyma · 01/11/2025 11:30

Yeah no religious connection to the name – I knew it was Biblical but wasn't aware that it had particularly religious connotations (assumed it was similar to e.g. Gabriel or Raphael, but obviously less used).

I love bonkers middle names. I'd do it.

Doggielovecharlotte · 01/11/2025 11:35

Just no

think of the poor child

Dylan, Ermintrude, Brian.

mogtheexcellent · 01/11/2025 11:39

DH wanted it as a first name - we have a 6 syllable double barrelled surname Confused HmmFortunately persuaded him otherwise.

As a middle name I have no opinion, and i was born in the 70s but i dont automatically see Magic roubdabout when i hear it. It's more of a real name than some 'tragedeighs' i see.
