Yea or nay as a middle name for Leo?

Looking for something a bit unusual to balance out a short popular first name. Love Zebedee but is it too much?

Family names not an option. Feel free to suggest other ideas (3 syllables or more ideally as surname is also short). TIA

i have come across Zebedee's but personally its a No from me,
florence and dougal as well as Brian less reminiscent

Breakfastpotatoes · 01/11/2025 09:02

It's great! Leo is a great, easily recognisable name. Zebedee is fun and a bit different but a name with a long history. I love the combination.

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 09:02

@Chocolatecoveredshitpig , I thought I'd get in there before anyone else. Smile

Seriously though, I like the name Zebedee. Zebedaeus is pretty cool.

purple590 · 01/11/2025 09:03

Even without the Magic Roundabout association it sounds like a joke name.
Would you want to be called Zebedee? Why not change your name to it?

I'd go with Zachery or Sebastian, no kid wants to named something 'unusual'.

EleanorReally · 01/11/2025 09:05

i do agree that younger parents and their offspring may not know zebedee from the magic roundabout
the zebedee i know of is referred to as zeb

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 09:05

@purple590 , Would you say the same about a similar sounding name like Zachary or Barnaby? Nobody makes fun of Florence.

It's Zachary, BTW.

what about xavier

Younger parents? The Magic Roundabout was 1964-1977. The babies born the year it ended are now 48 Hmm

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 01/11/2025 09:07

I think it is an incredible, best name ever. And that is nothing to do with the fact that its my cats name. Usually shortened to Zeb but will also answer to Boing.

Ohpleeeease · 01/11/2025 09:08

The generation who remember The Magic Roundabout will always have that association but those coming after won’t. I’m not sure I care for the name anyway, it’s something about that double ee at the end, a bit twee maybe? If you like biblical, what about Zeke, short for Ezekiel?

edited to say three short one syllable names could be quite cool!

If only there were such things as repeats.
I watched and loved it as a child (favourite character was and remains Brian) and I am younger than 48.

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta
Brian is an icon

WildCherryBlossom · 01/11/2025 09:11

I loved the Magic Roundabout. Nevertheless I think it’s a great middle name. Has not hindered Zeb Soanes’ career in the slightest https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeb_Soanes

(personally I draw the line at Ermintrude)

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 01/11/2025 09:12

That doesn't make sense. I wasn't the generation that first heard of The Beatles but I still know who they are.

@EleanorReally Brian for PM!

MossAndLeaves · 01/11/2025 09:14

By the time he's an adult most people under about 60 won't be making the magic roundabout connection.
With a grounded first name I think it's fine, barely anyone knows people's middle names and it gives him a more interesting one than just something like "Tom" or "ryan".

Owly11 · 01/11/2025 09:14

Nope. Magic Roundabout!!!

PevenseygirlQQ · 01/11/2025 09:15

As a middle name I’d go for it! However it does remind me of the character from the football factory, I think he is in Eastenders now

Because ‘younger parents’ is hardly everyone born after 1977! I am definitely not a younger parent; I was 40 when I had my first!

I do find MN really tiresome on these sorts of topics. One poster replies with the association they have with the name and everyone follows blindly. It isn’t that I like the name or not; I’m fairly neutral as it happens. But the idea that one name is subject to mockery because of a kids TV programme that is fifty years old but Peregrine is OK - really?

Needspaceforlego · 01/11/2025 09:17

Op how aboyt Dylon Zebedee or Dougal Zebedee Leo is a bit boring.

TerrierSlave · 01/11/2025 09:19

HugoYorway · 01/11/2025 08:50

Nobody under the age of 60 will have heard of Magic Roundabout and the kids of today won't bully because of a name.
I know this because I'm a teacher and a mother, and my children are called Splodge, Biscuit amd Brunch. They've never been teased.

Well I’m 38 and I’ve heard of it as have most people I know.

Oh OK, so no one can call their child a name because you watched a programme with someone who shared that name.

Do you not realise how fucking ridiculous you sound?
