I saw it in a book. The Lord/Duke was called Avon.

I'd pronounce it Ay-von (like Stratford upon Avon) not Ah-von

No :/

MrsBucketHat · 27/08/2025 09:56

Terrible name.

BoleynMemories13 · 27/08/2025 09:56

Cheap cosmetics

Doesn't sound very masculine either. Big fat no.

FrodoBiggins · 27/08/2025 09:56

He's the head crack dealer in the Wire. I actually like the name though 😂but obviously it would remind me and others of a certain age of the Wire... and the Avon lady.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 27/08/2025 09:57

Reminds me of the cosmetics company and their advert back in the day - ding dong, Avon calling.

RuthandPen · 27/08/2025 09:57

Anglo-American cosmetic brand as well as a river, you know. The Avon Lady etc.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 27/08/2025 09:58

No girl sorry - he will be forever referred to as Avon lady, hard no x

ForFunGoose · 27/08/2025 09:58

Don’t like it at all, wasn’t it an annoying pyramid style cosmetics company?

HeatherXoXo · 27/08/2025 09:59

No

GentleSheep · 27/08/2025 10:01

Avon from Blake's 7? It was good in that sci fi context but not so sure about it in our actual world!

Robertplantgoddess · 27/08/2025 10:01

Blakes 7 immediately came to mind (probably as I'm old though).

KiteFlight · 27/08/2025 10:01

I don’t like it at all because I also associate it with the Avon lady.

laesosalt · 27/08/2025 10:02

Yer da sells Avon

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 27/08/2025 10:02

No no, jist naw, he's gonna be nicknamed ding dong at school. 😮

MellowPinkDeer · 27/08/2025 10:03

Avon calling!

i don’t think it works , sorry

mnahmnah · 27/08/2025 10:03

A lifetime of Avon Lady and catalogue comments

woopdedoodle · 27/08/2025 10:03

Well I'd think you were a fan of Blakes 7. I had a huge crush on Avon as a teenager. But most people are going to think of makeup.
Culturally I think Avon is an old old (Saxon, Celtic?) word for river.
Beautiful, but it's not going to read that way for most people.

Exhaustedonallfronts · 27/08/2025 10:04

Barksdale…. It’s not something I’d like my child to be associated with, at least by adults of a certain age who all watched the wire in the early 00s!

jsku · 27/08/2025 10:05

first association - Soap…
dont do it to your child please

BarnacleBeasley · 27/08/2025 10:06

Is it a Georgette Heyer book? If so, the Duke of Avon's actual first name is Justin. I would think of cosmetics pyramid schemes too, and also the fact that one of the Avon moisturisers is supposed to also be a good insect repellent.

Namechangeforthis88 · 27/08/2025 10:08

It is a great name but comes with challenging associations.

Avon as a boy's name - what do you think?
shellyleppard · 27/08/2025 10:10

"ding dong avon calling......." First thing i think of!! They used to sell make up, soaps etc door to door when I was younger 😀

cattykinns · 27/08/2025 10:10

i don’t think it would work because of the Avon lady etc. What about Afon? It’s Welsh for river. Pronounced sort of like Ah-von rather than Ay-von.

Zempy · 27/08/2025 10:11

Is this a joke?

SlieveMiskish · 27/08/2025 10:11

Arran would be better..
