Avon as a boy's name - what do you think?

I saw it in a book. The Lord/Duke was called Avon.

I'd pronounce it Ay-von (like Stratford upon Avon) not Ah-von

Is it a Georgette Heyer book? If so, the Duke of Avon's actual first name is Justin. I would think of cosmetics pyramid schemes too, and also the fact that one of the Avon moisturisers is supposed to also be a good insect repellent.

I thought of that book too! These Old Shades?
Justin is a lovely name.

lunar1 · 27/08/2025 10:14

I’d think you don’t like your child very much!

kiddywinktee · 27/08/2025 10:14

Firm no from me .

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 27/08/2025 10:15

It would teach him resilience.

UnsocialMedia · 27/08/2025 10:16

Nobody of the child's age will have the faintest clue about the Avon lady. I'm not keen on the name though, it's a bit like calling your child Severn or Thames. (Trent, though? 🤔)

SpiritVaults72 · 27/08/2025 10:17

My brother's friend called his son Avon after the character in Blake's Seven. He's in his thirties now and nobody has every made fun of him. I'd say it's a lot better than all the hyphenated monstrosities doing the rounds now.

DiscoBob · 27/08/2025 10:18

It reminds me of 90s black American characters from somewhere like Compton in films, Ayvon, Treyvon, DeShawn etc.

Otherwise it's just a dodgy makeup MLM.

SummerFrog25 · 27/08/2025 10:18

Nope.

Although he probably wouldn't get teased because of the Avon Lady' as those of us old enough to think of that are most likely to be grandparent age & not about to give our grandkids that kind of ammo!

but it's just not a nice name.

Frankley · 27/08/2025 10:20

My first thought was, it sounds lovely. Hadn't thought of the Avon lady though.

SleepyLemur · 27/08/2025 10:20

I knew an Avon growing up, so have a more positive reaction to the name, but from the responses I would avoid it.

KatieDidIt · 27/08/2025 10:20

Avon… when he walks through a doorway people will say, Ding Dong…

Avon from Blake's 7? It was good in that sci fi context but not so sure about it in our actual world!

My favourite character from Blake's 7 and the only time I've heard it as a name. I suspect that if it didn't catch on as a name then, it probably won't now. So a no from me.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/08/2025 10:21

In Blake's 7 Avon was his surname though. I think this might be hormones talking, OP. Have another think.

YouOughtToSeeADoctorAboutThat · 27/08/2025 10:21

Ridiculous.

NotMyRealAccount · 27/08/2025 10:22

I've got a young relative, grandson of a second cousin, called Avon. As far as I'm aware nobody batted an eyelid about his parents' choice of name for him, though I don't know whether he gets any teasing from his primary school classmates. I'm old enough to have used Avon cosmetics and watched Blake's Seven but those associations didn't spring to mind at all.

Berthatydfil · 27/08/2025 10:23

Robertplantgoddess · 27/08/2025 10:01

Blakes 7 immediately came to mind (probably as I'm old though).

Me too

Justin is a lovely name.

I was coming to say that too.

If someone’s going for Heyer’s nobility as potential names there’s Alverstoke, Denville, Desford, Salford, Sale, Dolphinton…

PanderBare · 27/08/2025 10:24

Avon | Superdrug
How about Clyde, Don, Lea, Eden or Trent?

Heyer? That's his title, not his given name. His first name is Justin.

I'd no more call a child Avon that I'd choose Stringer. The Wire was great, naming a child after a Baltimore Drug Kingpin, not so great.

And the old fashioned cosmetics brand? Just no.

FrogFalacy · 27/08/2025 10:26

I’m another one old enough to remember ding dong Avon calling!

Vogt · 27/08/2025 10:28

Robertplantgoddess · 27/08/2025 10:01

Blakes 7 immediately came to mind (probably as I'm old though).

Also thought that!

MaloryJones · 27/08/2025 10:31

Oh God, No OP

Avon will always remind Me of 2 things

The Catalogue
One of the Characters in long ago series Blake's Seven , Kerr Avon (okay its a surname for Him but was known as Avon).

Blake though, that's a nice name.

cattykinns · 27/08/2025 10:32

Avon is still very much a thing round by me. Avon catalogue left on doorstep regularly, we have an Avon lady post in the village fb group and several at the hospital I work in.

MaloryJones · 27/08/2025 10:33

Namechangeforthis88 · 27/08/2025 10:08

It is a great name but comes with challenging associations.

Absolutely

Paul Darrow played the arrogant and self obsessed Avon extremely well. He (and the Federations Travis) were my favourites
Travis is a nice name OP

Yer da sells Avon

I thought that too but worried it was a little niche for mumsnet 😂
