I saw it in a book. The Lord/Duke was called Avon.

I'd pronounce it Ay-von (like Stratford upon Avon) not Ah-von

@Needmorelego , you seem to have your own unique method af transcribing.

The op said "Avon - pronounced Ay-von like Stratford upon Avon".
But I read "Ay-von" as "Aye-von" because I would automatically read "Ay" as being pronounced "Aye" (so would actually sound more like the name Ivan).
That's why I thought she would be saying it wrong.
I now realise she meant "Aay-von" - which of course is the correct way to say it.
To me "Ay" is said "Aye or Eye" not "Aay" as in hay etc. Whether that's officially correct I have no idea.
Hopefully that makes sense to you 🙂

You don’t need to keep explaining yourself. I would read Ay sounding like Aye as well in some instances. Also from near Stratford.

Mumofmarauders · 27/08/2025 14:51

I like it!

Ummm ok. If you say so
Anyway....I just googled.
Various dictionaries say "Ay" is a variation spelling of "Aye" (as in "all in favour say Aye" or "Aye Aye Captain".
So it is pronounced the same as "Eye".
Therefore "Avon pronounced Ay-von like Stratford upon Avon" is wrong.
So there 😂😂
(Sticks out tongue and runs away making some Shakespearean insults....)

Unfortunately @PanderBare doesn't seem to understand it 😂

Heyer? That's his title, not his given name. His first name is Justin.

I'd no more call a child Avon that I'd choose Stringer. The Wire was great, naming a child after a Baltimore Drug Kingpin, not so great.

And the old fashioned cosmetics brand? Just no.

Exactly. It's like [The Earl of] Worcester in King Henry IV Part 1.

@Needmorelego ,grow up.

EmpressaurusKitty · 27/08/2025 15:14

I used to know three teenage girls called L’Oreal, Chanel & Armani.

Ok.
I will "Exit, pursued by a bear" 🐻
(or rather a PanderBare)

Seriously though.... apologies. I was just being a bit daft with the Stratford upon Avon Shakespeare link.
Have a nice rest of the day 🙂

A lifetime of Avon Lady and catalogue comments

I agree so wouldn't saddle the poor kid with that name because of that. But tbh although it is still going Avon is kind of becoming thing of the past and you dont see so much of it now so will the babies generation even know what Avon, the Avon lady/catalogues even are etc? Or even heard of it?

Barksdale?

Ventress · 27/08/2025 15:33

My favourite username on MN was a poster called “Avoncallingbarksdale” 😂 made me smile every time. I loved The Wire.

ForFunGoose · 27/08/2025 15:33

Dominic is a great name

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 27/08/2025 15:40

No from me

Oh my goodness 😄
Avon is off the list! Resounding NO from everyone!

Yes , the Duke of Avon. I thought it would be nice. I'm not a fan of Justin as a name though.
The son in the book is Vidal which I thought was interesting but Vidal Sassoon rules that out.

I haven't watched Blake 7.

I had watched the Wire and forgot about Avon Barksdale (?) which is maybe why it sounded like a good name - I'd heard it before.

Avon is a great character tbf (although I wouldn't want my son taking after him...)
What about Stringer? Or Bell? Or my favourite (and Barack Obama's), Omar?

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/08/2025 16:30

I love it but would spell it differently - Aven maybe? The one I know is welsh and spelt Afen.

RuthW · 27/08/2025 18:49

Ding song Avon calling.

You can’t call a child that.

Did you start off with Nile?
Avon is awful

Ha ha, so many possibilities... Orinoco, Ob, Po, Volga...

PanderBare · 27/08/2025 21:31

Zambezi has a cool vibe.
Hudson seems trendy.
Orinoco might be too Wombles.

user1492757084 · 28/08/2025 07:01

Maybe as a second name, with River as the third.

My smart, handsome nephew is called Avery.
And I like Dominic and Minik.
