I saw it in a book. The Lord/Duke was called Avon.

I'd pronounce it Ay-von (like Stratford upon Avon) not Ah-von

No.

Needmorelego · 27/08/2025 13:21

As someone who once lived in Stratford upon Avon I don't quite understand your pronunciation.
Unless you are say "Ay" as "Aay" 🤔
But I'm another that instantly thinks Blake's 7.
Long time since I've seen it but I think he was a bit of a baddie.

Needmorelego · 27/08/2025 13:23

Actually... in Blake's 7 wasn't Avon his surname?

PanderBare · 27/08/2025 13:30

@Needmorelego , which part of I'd pronounce it Ay-von (like Stratford upon Avon) not Ah-von do you not understand?

She's saying it as ˈeɪvən/ not as ˈævən.

🤣 I really thought it was a nice name!!! Can't believe it's generally thought of as definitely not.
Thanks everyone

Have you genuinely never heard of the company Avon? I thought they were still around, they certainly were as recently as the 2010s. Anyone who has heard of Avon calling it's literally the first thing you think of, making it a definite no as a name.

They are still around. I had a catalogue through my letterbox just last week.

I thought so. I'm baffled how anyone can't have heard of them.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/08/2025 13:36

Avon Barksdale for me!

Sorry but I would read "Ay" as rhyming with "Aye".
If she's saying it as rhyming with "Aay" (like Hay, May, Bay etc) it makes sense.
Stratford upon "Aay-von".
🙂

deedeemeloy · 27/08/2025 13:41

He’ll be called the Avon lady for sure

PanderBare · 27/08/2025 13:42

I don't think that anyone says Stratford-upon-Eye-von, @Needmorelego .

That was my point.
I read "Ay-von" as "Eye-von" which is wrong.
It's "Aay-von".
I lived there 😂

I know names are a very personal choice but I do think it’s worth sounding people out online about potential choices.

I wouldn’t confide in close family or friends though. Strangers only apart from a couple of mates who would be really honest but not mean or judgmental.

Blanknotebook · 27/08/2025 13:51

It would be as bad as naming someone Rimmel or Revlon. It will always be a name associated with a cosmetic brand.

user2848502016 · 27/08/2025 13:55

No sorry I don’t like it, most people will just think of the cosmetics company!
Levon is similar sounding (usually pronounced Luh-Von) and is an actual name

Overtheatlantic · 27/08/2025 13:55

Yer da sells Avon is an insult I heard a few years ago.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/08/2025 13:55

Avon calling!!!

Overtheatlantic · 27/08/2025 13:56

Ivan maybe?

Gruttenberg · 27/08/2025 14:16

I guess you're not from Scotland @LeeshaPaper? You've forced me to remember this so I'm now forced to share it with you. Glad you changed your mind!

PanderBare · 27/08/2025 14:20

Your post makes no sense, @Needmorelego , regardless of whether you lived there.

It's "Aay-von". - I wouldn't know how to say that. 'Ay' on here means ay as in hay, pay, say.

Notagain75 · 27/08/2025 14:22

Dukes usually take their names from the area their family is originally from or the land they were gifted by the King, the Duke of Devonshire etc? Avon is a River and previously was a County but it's not a name for an individual

larkstar · 27/08/2025 14:24

If you like the sound and look of Avon - maybe Evan is close enough?

greasyhairedwoman · 27/08/2025 14:25

People born in 2026 will 100% NOT be saying ‘ding dong’ in 5 years’ time to a kid in their class. They really really won’t. It would be such a lame old person joke - my DCs are almost 20 and i don’t think they’ve heard of Avon.
I quite like it.

It’s used a lot here in Scotland. Usually just friendly piss taking between young lads but would still be a no from me.

The op said "Avon - pronounced Ay-von like Stratford upon Avon".
But I read "Ay-von" as "Aye-von" because I would automatically read "Ay" as being pronounced "Aye" (so would actually sound more like the name Ivan).
That's why I thought she would be saying it wrong.
I now realise she meant "Aay-von" - which of course is the correct way to say it.
To me "Ay" is said "Aye or Eye" not "Aay" as in hay etc. Whether that's officially correct I have no idea.
Hopefully that makes sense to you 🙂
