Finn… for a girl

DH has just announced that the name we would have used for a boy, he wants to use for DD. He loves it but I remain unconvinced. Tell me your honest opinion please, we are in Scotland.

How about Fern?

crumblingschools · 17/06/2025 07:41

@Cotswoldmama ultimately would the child like it, probably not and be changing it as soon as possible. If parents want quirky names change their own don’t lumber their children with them

Brian and Kenneth are also great names for girls 😂

I'd go for Nigel or Barry for a DD but love your suggestions too 😍🤣

OP this to me is a male name and your DD will be forever dealing with people assuming they're male/identify as male. As others have suggested I'd go for Fiona/Ffion/Fionnuala or similar so she can use that in a professional capacity (or all the time if she prefers) and you can nickname her Finn.

Finn always makes me think of sharks - so might as well have a female shark!

I know a woman called Claud - dead weird but everyone got used to it.

CarCrashLifes · 17/06/2025 07:50

I like it!

villamariavintrapp · 17/06/2025 08:01

I don't like boy's names for girls because it's sexist, so I wouldn't

Gloschick · 17/06/2025 08:19

How about Serafina shortened to Fin?

steppingin · 17/06/2025 08:21

I like it!

clarrylove · 17/06/2025 08:22

Nope. Fern is nice.

Lostworlds · 17/06/2025 08:23

I kinda like it but I’m a teacher and have only taught male Finn’s. It runs the risk of people reading her name on a register and assuming she’s a boy.

InTheDark2025 · 17/06/2025 08:25

I know a Fionnuala who goes by Finn and really pulls it off.
I also know a young woman called Finley - everyone assumes she’s a man before they meet her.

CopperTray · 17/06/2025 08:26

I actually like it as well. It’s more neutral than Barry surely- but perhaps because I knew a Fionnuala who was called Finn

Hammer. Nail. Head.

whiterabbity · 17/06/2025 08:38

Dh has changed it to Fiona.

Do you agree though? I hope you are getting a say!

Glad he's seen the light over Finn though. I knew a female Julian at uni and she said it was a total pain as everyone expected her to be a bloke. I would have knocked off a letter and called myself Julia I think.

FlourishNotPerish · 17/06/2025 08:48

Wasn’t there a Finlay in Home & Away in the 80s/90s? It seemed ok then in a sea of gender neutral names like Cameron, Morgan, Courtney, etc. But it sounds a bit weird now.

I always think Finn sounds unfinished.

Eenameenadeeka · 17/06/2025 09:23

I'd never give my child a name for the other gender. A similar sounding name but more neutral - Quinn

CountryQueen · 17/06/2025 09:29

It’s not even nice for a boy.

Lulu1919 · 17/06/2025 09:49

Finn would make me think male
I've always lived Finty though

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/06/2025 09:53

Fiona is a pretty name.

I do agree that these days, someone obviously female with a traditionally boys name doesn’t make me think “quirky unusual parents” but “trans man”.

mummysmagicmedicine · 17/06/2025 09:55

How about Fern? X

Really? It makes me think misogynist.

namechangedforvalidreasons · 17/06/2025 10:17

I like it, reminds me of Fionnuala (the Cooler) from The Sopranos by Alan Warner, aka Finn

CalmCritic · 17/06/2025 10:19

You don't need to fall in love with it. You don't like it. So leave it. I personally think it would be cute as a nickname for one of the previously mentioned names, but I'm not the one pregnant in this heat. So he can fuck off really!😂 Tell him no

Sayshesheshe · 17/06/2025 10:21

I don’t on the whole like male names for girls but weirdly quite like Finn. Fenn has a nice tone to it too but I think Fiona is dated and not in a cool way.
