DH has just announced that the name we would have used for a boy, he wants to use for DD. He loves it but I remain unconvinced. Tell me your honest opinion please, we are in Scotland.

Are the people so open minded that you would name a boy Fiona?

I think an important point is being made about the social hierarchy of male and female names.

It's not radical to give a girl a traditionally masculine name, though it is likely to make her life more complicated.

Edited

It's a point, isn't it. Give a girl a boyish or unisex name and free her from the constraints of her gender. Nobody wants to burden boys with girl names, heaven forbid.

Finty is an Irish girls name. You could use Fin as a NN.

Is it?

I’m Irish and have never heard of it. Just had a quick look at the name records for the last 60 years and it’s not even recorded as a name.

It’s definitely not an Irish language name as there is no y in the Irish alphabet.

W0tnow · 17/06/2025 12:27

I think it’s lovely!

I see what people are saying about a masculine name for a girl, but I feel like you can get away with it with this name. In a way that you can’t with, oh, I don’t know…Bruce, Rupert, Lewis, David. Shane is another example of a unisex name. It’s not to my taste, but again, I think (for reasons that are unclear to me!) that you can call a girl, Shane.

I think Finn is in that category.

I've only heard of Finty Williams, Born
Tara Cressida Williams

"Finty" is a nickname coined by her father that stuck, and is the first name Williams uses both personally and professionally.

I really like it, and I don’t view it as a ‘boy’ name.

what is it that you aren’t keen on?

Livpool · 17/06/2025 12:30

How to make your daughter feel that her dad wished she was a boy!

FondantFancyAnyone · 17/06/2025 12:39

@aperolspritzbasicbitch , Finley is a top 10 name for boys and
Finn is something like 13th most popular name for a boy in Scotland.

in 2023,there was one female Finlay and one female Fionn registered.

It probably compares to naming a girl Theo or Luca.
She'll go through life being asked why her parents gave her a boy's name.

Well there was a boy in one of my girls classes called Devine, so probably wouldn’t have been any issue with the kids.
I have what was a traditionally ‘male’ name when I was named, though now more common for a girl. Has caused me zero issues. I think the only way to break down gender stereotypes is not to perpetuate them.

Strokethefurrywall · 17/06/2025 13:50

I know an 11 year old female Finley (Finn). Her parents are American.
It doesn’t seem weird to me, but then I wanted to call my baby Dylan if he was a girl so 🤷🏽‍♀️

MummytoE · 17/06/2025 13:51

" everybody so creative"...

Thanks for the stats - but I was simply saying that I don’t view it as a boy name.

maybe that’s because I know a female Finn.

i would compare it to a Casey/Kerry/Kelly type name. Typically used for females, but not ridiculous on a male.

Ellie1015 · 17/06/2025 13:53

Both parents should love the name. Even if one gets their first choice as cant quite agree. Keep looking till you find a name you both want.

It's not a subjective thing or a matter of opinion. Names have shared social meaning. In Scotland, where the OP lives, Finn is 100% a boy's name.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/06/2025 14:04

Just call her Barry and be done with it. Seriously though, Quinn is much nicer.

I really don’t like Finnoula Sad

I think that’s why DH likes it, because it’s so ‘unusual’ for a girl.

It’s unusual for a girl because it’s a boy’s name 😆
Just like John, Richard, Benjamin, etc.

Well, considering Shane is a variant of John, there’s exactly the same issue with giving it to a girl, imo.

Brian and Kenneth are also great names for girls 😂

😂 or what about Hamish, that's s good Scottish name

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 17/06/2025 14:11

No

BelfastBard · 17/06/2025 14:18

I know a few female Finns. But they’re all short for Finnoula.

ChateauMargaux · 17/06/2025 14:24

Nigel Lawson named his daughters Nigella, Thomasina and Horatia.. don't be a Nigel! Especially because the reason he wants Finn.. is because it was his favourite boys name... it will create a subtle energy that he wanted a boy and if not a boy, then a boyish girl.

Dora33 · 17/06/2025 14:34

Definitely would not name a girl Finn.
I know a couple of women/ girls called Fianna.
Never heard of Finty being an Irish Girl's name. Always thought Finty was a nickname for fintan ( Boy's name).

CurlewKate · 17/06/2025 15:09

Nobody in favour of using boy’s names for girls will EVER address the question of why we don’t use girl’s names for boys.

KayEmAy · 17/06/2025 16:36

I am a very big fan of masculine names on girls but for some reason I'm not keen on Finn being one of them.

Pinty · 17/06/2025 16:38

Tell your husband no.
There are thousands of nice girls names I'm sure there must be something he can use that will be just hers. Not a name he wanted to call a son.

How about Fenella/ Fen?

Fenella is a lovely name - there was one at my primary school but i've never met one since.
