DH has just announced that the name we would have used for a boy, he wants to use for DD. He loves it but I remain unconvinced. Tell me your honest opinion please, we are in Scotland.

My daughter has a full on male name as her middle name.
Reason I didn’t use it for a boy is because….I don’t have a boy.

Strokethefurrywall · 17/06/2025 19:27

@aperolspritzbasicbitch I went to school in the late 80s with a girl called Claire and her middle name was Timothy.
Her parents wanted to honor her grandfather and they didn’t have boys.

Username2151 · 17/06/2025 19:46

I don't think that the name Finn in any way, suits a girl.
I got an image in my head of a Finn and it isn't one of a little girl.
I know that a lot of people don't like this name but I think Fiona is a pretty name, cheerful and sunny, not old ladyish as I've never known anyone named Fiona so don't identify it as such.
Too bad Finn isn't a nn for Fiona, but likely it's not a name under consideration.

Same reasons here - she absolutely loves it!

I wouldn’t use it for a first name for either sex though! 🤣

Surroundedbyfools · 17/06/2025 19:55

No. Just tell him no.i know these days anything goes but there are so many lovely names and Finn is a nice boys name. Not a unisex or girls name. I mean would u call ur daughter John ? I don’t think so

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/06/2025 20:02

There's an Irish name, Finnguala. I used to work with one and she was always called Finn.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 17/06/2025 20:04

Fenna is a nice Dutch girl’s name!

Wasn’t there a Finlay in Home & Away in the 80s/90s? It seemed ok then in a sea of gender neutral names like Cameron, Morgan, Courtney, etc. But it sounds a bit weird now.

I always think Finn sounds unfinished.

haha yeah that’s what I was going to say, I thought Finlay was such a nice name until my mum said it was ridiculous that she had a boy’s
name 😂

Fiona is lovely though, she could be Finn for short

cramptramp · 17/06/2025 20:17

No. Don’t do it to her.

Ncforthiscms · 17/06/2025 20:21

I know a Fee. Really pretty name.

I like Finn. Not keen on fiona

Annascaul · 17/06/2025 20:24

Fee is a really pretty name?
Can’t agree, I’m afraid.

terracelane23 · 17/06/2025 20:27

It’s a no from me.

FondantFancyAnyone · 17/06/2025 20:29

@Surroundedbyfools ,there was a John in What Katy Did, but she was really Joanna.

AnneMarieW · 17/06/2025 22:17

I’ve heard of a Finn short for Serafina. I think that’s kind of cool - a “masculine”/punchy short nn for an elaborately feminine first name (see also Rory for Aurora, George for Georgiana etc etc as there’s loads in that vein).

I must admit I’m not keen on Finn as a standalone name personally.

Conkerjar · 17/06/2025 23:22

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 17/06/2025 13:51

Thanks for the stats - but I was simply saying that I don’t view it as a boy name.

maybe that’s because I know a female Finn.

i would compare it to a Casey/Kerry/Kelly type name. Typically used for females, but not ridiculous on a male.

The Welsh spelling is Ffion, there will be plenty of those.

Conkerjar · 17/06/2025 23:24

Ugh replied to the wrong thing, sorry. That's meant to be quoting whoever said there was one Fionn... Actually now I think of it any names below a certain number aren't given a specific stat because it's some kind of data protection breach. I think it's 3 kids or less in a year.

CC222 · 17/06/2025 23:26

Nah

FondantFancyAnyone · 17/06/2025 23:29

@Conkerjar , I did wonder what you were on about.

The 3 or more is the ONS data, OP is in Scotland.

3 Ffions, all girls.

I actually think it’s Fab 😊 , I have a Rudy , mostly a boys name , everyone admires it though she’s the only Rudy where we are , but there are no boy Rudy’s either …

Gotcha. Thanks! There were 87 in England/Wales in 2023. I missed the part about OP being in Scotland. Saw the comment about Iona after I posted mine 😄

This thread has reminded me of https://names.darkgreener.com/ - been a while since my last perusal. Checking in on some faves, which I'll never get to use unless there's some kind of miracle. Or more dogs. 😄

Isn’t it Seraphina?

AnneMarieW · 18/06/2025 17:02

greengreyblue · 18/06/2025 16:02

Isn’t it Seraphina?

Serafina is a well used variant spelling - just like Sophia vs Sofia. If anything it’s more popular than the Seraphina spelling internationally (just like Sofia).

greengreyblue · 18/06/2025 17:09

I see. I just like the meaning- from seraphin.

Finn always makes me think of sharks - so might as well have a female shark!

I know a woman called Claud - dead weird but everyone got used to it.

Could Claud be short for Claudine..? I used to work with a lovely lady nicknamed Claud!
