Tybalt?

Hi,
I was thinking Tybalt as the name for the baby boy I’m expecting. I think it’s a lovely name but I’m slightly worried about the Romeo/Juliet implications as well.
For the middle name we were considering Ripley, so the name would be Tybalt Ripley, as again think the name is lovely.
Could we possibly get away with naming our son this without people thinking he’s the Romeo + Juliet character!!!

Oh my god what????!!!! Poor child, he will get the piss ripped. Almost as bad as the woman I know who called her baby daughter ‘Dewberry’ in the late 90’s when that scent was all the rage.

Why not choose the French spelling Thibaut? Thibaut Pinot is a national hero in France both as a pro cyclist and an animal lover and all round lovely guy. Very positive vibes.

I never understand why people ask for opinions on baby names because some will gush and some will gag. You do you.

If you want my opinion, though, Tybalt will always, ALWAYS be associated with R&J.

There's no point in asking people what they think of the name if Romeo and Juliet didn't exist. It does exist and that's what a lot of people will think of when they hear Tybalt.

Where do you live? You say you aren't in the UK so 14 year olds bullying kids won't apply. Not much point asking on a site which is mainly occupied by people from the UK if you're somewhere where Tybalt is a perfectly acceptable name. You might be able to find a name used in the country you are in which is better than Tybalt but fits your other criteria.

I do think you'd be setting your child up for a life of questioning, probable sniggering and R&J references.

You could at least opt for a more traditional middle name so they have the option of going by that if they hate it!

The character was a total little gobshite to be fair. Aggressive, impulsive, not much of a thinker and dies young whilst fighting someone else's battles. OP, you might have found it during a Google search and it fits your 'ty' requirement but it's honestly not a pleasant association for a little boy or young man.

If you are looking for names starting with Ty, in the Netherlands there is a first name Tycho (pronounced Tee-Co).

What about Turlough? If I remember correctly it’s pronounced Tull - uk. Please any Irish mums correct me if I’m wrong, I only heard it from Dr Who and they pronounced it incorrectly

If you like it, it’s fine. Kids won’t bully him for his name. It will just be his name! Slightly outing but I teach a Messi, Mercurio, Apple, Blessing and Prince (amongst other names MN would consider ‘out there’) Kids don’t care.
