Tybalt?

Hi,
I was thinking Tybalt as the name for the baby boy I’m expecting. I think it’s a lovely name but I’m slightly worried about the Romeo/Juliet implications as well.
For the middle name we were considering Ripley, so the name would be Tybalt Ripley, as again think the name is lovely.
Could we possibly get away with naming our son this without people thinking he’s the Romeo + Juliet character!!!

I really wouldn’t. How about Thiago? Theo? Tyler?

Megifer · 04/04/2025 11:43

No.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 04/04/2025 11:46

Tibbles?

Tybalt Ripley is 50% a fantastic and amazing name but also 50% slightly crazy.
I kinda like it 😳

I agree in that I can see the appeal but I personally think it's just a bit too crazy and out there. Could be hard to live with.

SocialEvent · 04/04/2025 11:49

I really like it but I don’t like Rpley unless you’re a massive fan of Sigourney Weaver in the Alien movies, in which case, great and use that too.

CurlewKate · 04/04/2025 11:51

No. Don’t. It’s a baby, not a fox hound.

No33 · 04/04/2025 11:51

I had a cat called tybalt.

Tybalt Ripley?
Perfect name for a sexy baddy in a bodice ripper book.

"Tybalt Ripley stalked across the office like a tiger. His perfectly pressed charcoal suit clinging to the outline of his biceps suggestively. He suddenly stopped at Juliet's desk and studied her with his amber flecked eyes. 'Remind me who you are?' He growled.,....."

😂😂😂😂 Please don’t inflict this on your child.

Keepgettingolder81 · 04/04/2025 11:52

Please don’t.
It will not make for an easy school life for him.
he really won’t thank you when he’s in year 9!

littlemousebigcheese · 04/04/2025 11:52

I love it in theory but it will get shortened to Ty which feels very chavvy to me

Toddlerteaplease · 04/04/2025 11:52

Ripley is also a deprived area of Derbyshire.

I think Alien franchise!

IllustratedDictionaryOfTheDoldrums · 04/04/2025 12:04

I like Tybalt. It's lovely. Although I see there are plenty of posters already who want you to go with something common, presumably one from some pre-approved list of ten 'classic' names they've got in their head.
It's not as if you've come up with some random collection of sounds. It's an old name, and others have said, it's not uncommon in other countries.

Lindy2 · 04/04/2025 12:08

I might be on my own with this but I actually rather like it.

Yes, some people will think of R&J but there's plenty of Juliets around and now Romeo also seems to be growing in popularity.

It will almost certainly be shortened to Ty though. People will then probably assume he's actually named Tyler or Tyrone instead.

There are names between these two positions. But hey, you’re obviously one of the “cool kids”🤣

DaisyChain505 · 04/04/2025 12:11

Cat, yes.

Child, no.

Ecocool · 04/04/2025 12:12

Just no.

Totally agree, it’s not the “cool” adults the child has to worry about, it’s the other 14 year old boys they will be in class with in gcse English …teenage boys aren’t exactly known for their emotional maturity.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/04/2025 12:13

Sounds more like a paint colour.

Why would you do this to a human being, someone that will be an adult one day, a baby whom you are supposed to love for the rest of his life.

If you and daddy love the name so much, why not change your own names by deed poll...

SedumRoof · 04/04/2025 12:14

I don’t know, OP, I know several French Thibauds, but Tybalt in the Anglosphere is either going to get people quoting yards of R and J or pronouncing it Tie-balt.

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 04/04/2025 12:15

Ripley is a better first name IMO.

Tylbalt- awful. Sorry.

What about Ptolemy? Similar sounding and also fucking dreadful.

UtterlyOtterly · 04/04/2025 12:15

It would be an unkindness to give a child such a ridiculous, unpleasant and pretentious name.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 04/04/2025 12:16

I love a name rooted in ancient culture. I wanted to name my daughter Minerva (vetoed) or Cleo (ditto). But Tybalt Ripley sounds like a baddie landowner in Middle Ages England and is quite ridiculous. The poor boy will be bullied. No.

Zeitumschaltung · 04/04/2025 12:18

Where did you know the name Tybalt from, the play or elsewhere?
If you associate it with the play yourself, it’s crazy to expect that others won’t.

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 12:18

To all PP being needlessly rude to me,
I would prefer my child to have a name that is exotic rather than basic, as Mumsnet prefers. If R&J DIDNT exist, what would be your opinions on the name?
