Tybalt?

Hi,
I was thinking Tybalt as the name for the baby boy I’m expecting. I think it’s a lovely name but I’m slightly worried about the Romeo/Juliet implications as well.
For the middle name we were considering Ripley, so the name would be Tybalt Ripley, as again think the name is lovely.
Could we possibly get away with naming our son this without people thinking he’s the Romeo + Juliet character!!!

Why do people do this to their children? No way he likes his name later in life and as an employer I’m thinking you have an obsession with R&J. Then I am thinking Cobalt and periodic table.

Geez OP I get original but just don’t.

MajorCarolDanvers · 04/04/2025 12:40

It’s awful. It sounds like a chemical compound.

Anyone who has read or seen any production of Romeo & Juliet is going to associate him solely with that. There is no other reference in anyone's head for that name.

I would also advise against Ripley to be honest. There are two famous Ripleys, both fictional. One is a woman and the other is a renowned psychopath.

And Ripleys Believe It Or Not since you aren’t in the UK.

I’d prefer names that start with a Ty that aren’t Tyler as well if anybody has suggestions.

Tyrion?

Perhaps not, although I think there are quite a few Khaleesi's around.

TulipTuesday · 04/04/2025 12:46

My immediate thought was Thibaut Cortois. Is it pronounced the same way? If so, spell it the Belgian/French way to avoid the R&J associations. I quite like it for what it’s worth.

Frittercakes · 04/04/2025 12:22

I didn’t do R&J at school so I just immediately thought it sounded like a plumbing or decorating product from B&Q.

Probably because my brain pronounces it as mentioned by a previous poster. Tie-Balt.

I’ve no idea how it’s meant to sound. I’m clearly not educated enough.

I'm exactly the same.

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 04/04/2025 12:48

Love it! Naming your child after not one, but two fictional sociopathic murderers is quite the statement Grin I can just see you at baby group now, "Kind hands Tybalt Ripley, kind hands!"

YoungSoak · 04/04/2025 12:50

I absolutely love Tybalt. Go for it OP

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 04/04/2025 12:51

Weird name... unpleasant to say.

OutingInfo · 04/04/2025 12:52

If it's the "Ty" that's important to you rather than the actual name Tybalt and you want it to be original, just start with Ty and make up the rest with something that sounds reasonable.

e.g. Tyborne, Tylan, Tymore, Tyness etc, etc........... Just play around with it till you find something that works.

Edited to add I'm serious by the way, not about those particular names as they were the first ones that came into my head, but if you play around long enough you're bound to come up with something that's original without being "out there".

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 04/04/2025 12:54

Timothy?

There are few baby Timothys around nowadays

Ruthietuthie · 04/04/2025 12:54

Ripley's problematic too. Have you read Patricia Highsmith's Ripley series? (They are brilliant, if you haven't). Ripley is a murdering sociopath. There are no way these names work as a) if you didn't know the literary uses, you look ignorant, not a good look when it comes to something as important as naming a child, b) if you DO know, well, you've chosen the names of two highly problematic characters.

TertiaryAdjunctofUnimatrix01 · 04/04/2025 12:56

If you do want to go literary, avoid the murderers and sociopaths. Leander? Demetrius?

FoolishHips · 04/04/2025 12:36

I'm obviously very uncultured because I thought it was some sort of building material.

Perhaps you were thinking of "asphalt" or "tie bolt"?

outofideas2 · 04/04/2025 13:05

What about just Tye - old English surname for someone who lived near a pasture?

Smallmercies · 04/04/2025 13:06

Tyrese? Tyrion? Tymothy? Tyrwhitt? Tyger?

@Zeitumschaltung Of someone we met and knew. Also we are not in the UK therefore the 14 year old GCSE years bully comments are not relevant to us.

Why are you bothering to post on a mainly uk website if you aren’t in the uk? If it’s an English speaking country you will have the exact same issues as here, if you are in a country that speaks a different language then you need to ask people there don’t you? it’s cruel to name your child something that they may get bullied over.

Hols23 · 04/04/2025 13:08

I quite like it! Never heard it outside Romeo & Juliet so I think it's inevitable English speakers will think of that, but I do know a French Thibault (pronounced Tee-boh), which is a name I've always liked.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 04/04/2025 13:09

Not a fan to be honest

DinoLil · 04/04/2025 13:11

Sounds like something you'd find on the shelves in B&Q to clear blocked drains.

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 12:27

I’d prefer names that start with a Ty that aren’t Tyler as well if anybody has suggestions.

But how would Tybalt be pronounced in your country? In the UK it’s ’Tibbult’’, roughly. Nothing like Tyler.

Digdongdoo · 04/04/2025 13:21

Tybalt Ripley is a silly name.
Pick a name for you child that you like, not just because it's uncommon. Some names are uncommon for good reason.

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 13:25

@Digdongdoo Did you not read the post? I DO like the name.

Tybalt is a perfect name for an XL bully dog.
