Tybalt?

Hi,
I was thinking Tybalt as the name for the baby boy I’m expecting. I think it’s a lovely name but I’m slightly worried about the Romeo/Juliet implications as well.
For the middle name we were considering Ripley, so the name would be Tybalt Ripley, as again think the name is lovely.
Could we possibly get away with naming our son this without people thinking he’s the Romeo + Juliet character!!!

@Zeitumschaltung It was an old family name, which is why I am considering it.

Of someone you met or spoke of, or someone you’ve turned up via genealogy?
I understand that people are being harsh, but what posters are saying is 100% what people will think but not say every time you say what your baby is called.

Frittercakes · 04/04/2025 12:22

I didn’t do R&J at school so I just immediately thought it sounded like a plumbing or decorating product from B&Q.

Probably because my brain pronounces it as mentioned by a previous poster. Tie-Balt.

I’ve no idea how it’s meant to sound. I’m clearly not educated enough.

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 12:22

@Zeitumschaltung Of someone we met and knew. Also we are not in the UK therefore the 14 year old GCSE years bully comments are not relevant to us.

Anyone who has read or seen any production of Romeo & Juliet is going to associate him solely with that. There is no other reference in anyone's head for that name.

I would also advise against Ripley to be honest. There are two famous Ripleys, both fictional. One is a woman and the other is a renowned psychopath.

FairlyTired · 04/04/2025 12:23

Sounds like a type of rock

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 04/04/2025 12:23

Your child and your choice. But you asked for opinions.

IME (re 14 year old boys bullying) when a child comes to school with a name that emphasises the parent's originality it's usually sniggered about for a bit and then everyone moves on.

DiscoBeat · 04/04/2025 12:23

Tybalt Ripley? What have you got against this kid??

CarrieOnComplaining · 04/04/2025 12:25

But R&J is the ONLY reference people have for it.

I like the sound of it but wouldn't use it (if the R&J association didn't exist) because of the likelihood of Tibby / Tibbles / cat nickname.

I like Thibaud, a French name with a common root, but it would never be given its French pronunciation here (Te-bo) and the endless correcting of 'Thi-bored' would be a burden.

Katiesaidthat · 04/04/2025 12:25

I didn´t realise about Romeo&Juliet. Tybalt sounds like those rare minerals harvested for mobile phones. Ripley, The Talented Mr Ripley. Now I have read that book and that´s what first came to mind.

Thatcannotberight · 04/04/2025 12:27

Me, 50s. That's from R&J. Teenage son, that's from R&J. If you love it, go for it.

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 12:27

I’d prefer names that start with a Ty that aren’t Tyler as well if anybody has suggestions.

To all PP being needlessly rude to me,
I would prefer my child to have a name that is exotic rather than basic, as Mumsnet prefers. If R&J DIDNT exist, what would be your opinions on the name?

I like it as a name but it's condemning the lad to a lifetime of misery for all the reasons stated already. It's a non starter.

You might like an unusual name, but you're not choosing a name for yourself, you're choosing a name for him and he isn't going to thank you for making him stand out with an eccentric name with grotty connotations.

The origin of the name Tybalt is Theobald. Same meaning. There's plenty of lads called Theo. Go with that?

(Ripley has all the same issues IMHO.)

OutingInfo · 04/04/2025 12:28

It's a variant of Theobald isn't it? So how about just Theo?

Ripley? I think Alien, The Talented Mister and Believe It or Not. In that order.

Cross post with @GreenIsMyFavoriteColour 😃

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 12:29

No, sorry, I will not do Theobald. I hate the way it looks and I need a name that starts with Ty.

Still no. It sounds...silly. Still like a medieval baddie name, in a bodice-ripper romance.

But then if you aren’t in the UK it would be more useful to ask people in that country what they think. Outside Anglophone countries you won’t have these associations at all.

jdutchecking · 04/04/2025 12:30

I would also prefer a rather uncommon name that not many people have which is why I’m also discarding Theo.

OP posts:
FigPig · 04/04/2025 12:30

But Romeo and Juliet DOES exist. It’s an inescapable link, and not a great one.

Toren? You could get Ty from that, no one will question it much. Just Ty? There aren’t many names beginning with Ty really.

OutingInfo · 04/04/2025 12:30

Tyler? Tyrone? Tyrell?

Tymon? of Athens

or Tymion?

Tybalt Ripley?
Perfect name for a sexy baddy in a bodice ripper book.

"Tybalt Ripley stalked across the office like a tiger. His perfectly pressed charcoal suit clinging to the outline of his biceps suggestively. He suddenly stopped at Juliet's desk and studied her with his amber flecked eyes. 'Remind me who you are?' He growled.,....."

" ...I'm Tibby by the way, and I have a collar with a small bell on it."

@analyseyourdaydreams

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 04/04/2025 12:31

I've googled Ty names. I got Tyson, Tyrone, Tyrell and Monty (clearly the ty on the end).
FWIW I actually quite like Ty as a standalone. I think the cute kid in Maid in Manhattan was Ty. (His real name IRL is Tyler);

Didn’t do Romeo and Juliet either, I thought it sounded like a laundry detergent

Blarn · 04/04/2025 12:35

I forgot about R&J and my first thought was that you had seen the French name Thibault without knowig how it was pronounced and tried to make it a bit more unique.

FoolishHips · 04/04/2025 12:36

I'm obviously very uncultured because I thought it was some sort of building material.
