Persephone

My cousin just named her baby daughter 'Persephone'

What do you think. It's a bit out there. I know she wanted a long feminine and unusual name. I think it's nice but it's a bit long.

It's a bit of a mouthful. She's already calling her by the nickname 'Seph'.

When it's pronounced properly, it's a lovely name.

Frowningprovidence · 04/12/2024 21:18

I think its pretty and fits in well with current naming trends. Penelope is popular already and this is similar but softer.

It's not a name I'd pick, as I prefer harder sounds but luckily we all like different things and this wouldn't raise any eyebrows.

ThePoliteLion · 04/12/2024 21:19

Lovely name but why start a thread when it’s not your child?

PrimitivePerson · 04/12/2024 21:19

I really don't like it, although it's better than the current trend for names that sound like old ladies.

I think it's high time for a 70s name revival. Bring back Sharon, Samantha, Donna, Kelly and Joanne!

itsalwaysthesame · 04/12/2024 21:21

I've only ever heard this name mentioned in MN, I really dislike it, it's spelling and the sound of it, same with clementine, both MN names which in real life I've never heard of.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/12/2024 21:22

Gorgeous name.

I used to thing Penelope was pronounced penny-lope.

Same reason most of us start threads probably, looking for validation. You got a problem with that?

My sisters name is Penelope, we used to call her penny lope.

teatoast8 · 04/12/2024 21:23

Awful name

IMBCRound2 · 04/12/2024 21:25

I love it but I can’t bring myself to call my child ‘harbinger of doom’ - I wish the meaning and story weren’t so grim.

stargazerlil · 04/12/2024 21:25

Percy is nice.

Owl55 · 04/12/2024 21:26

It will be shortened to “Percy” in school .

Hugmorecats · 04/12/2024 21:27

There was a musical I saw at the west end last year all about Persephone and Odysseus, it had some beautiful songs. Maybe that inspired your cousin

Newshoos · 04/12/2024 21:29

I know a little Persephone. Her sisters are Tallulah and Juniper. Quite fussy names but pretty and it suits them.

Ggmores · 04/12/2024 21:31

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 19:17

Yeah I think you'd have to be a bit brave to use it.

I don't think I would use it as I could just imagine people taking the piss

That’s really sad and another reason I love living where I do, we have such a mix of names . Children don’t care about names. They can’t even pronounce their own at the beginning. It’s just horrible parents letting their narrow minded views seep out to their children. There are a few names at nursery that I didn’t know how to pronounce (seeing it written down), my toddler just said their name without any trouble.

Does your cousin know you're seeking opinions on her newborn's name online, while declaring it a mouthful?

She wouldn't care less!

And also she doesn't own the name.

This is a really weird thread.

Persephone is a well used and recognised name. How can people not know how to pronounce it?! It's not "out there" in the slightest.

Eh?

There's loads of threads on here, where people write about hearing a name somewhere. They're not using it for their own child. They just heard the name and think it's unusual.

Persephone is quite unusual, which is why I was thinking about it.

Well used?

I don't think it is. I've only met one in my entire life.

I've got a friend whose daughter has the name Persephone. They call her Persi. I think it's a lovely name (was a bit unsure at first)

Yeah! It's very common among women of a certain age, but for a kid now it would be quite a bold choice.

Persi?! 😬 You mean PERCY?! 😆

coxesorangepippin · 04/12/2024 21:47

She'll be nicknamed Percy

No doubt about it.
