Persephone

My cousin just named her baby daughter 'Persephone'

What do you think. It's a bit out there. I know she wanted a long feminine and unusual name. I think it's nice but it's a bit long.

It's a bit of a mouthful. She's already calling her by the nickname 'Seph'.

Love it! Percy is a cute nickname too

Zippidydoodah · 04/12/2024 19:25

I love it, and the nickname sephy.

HawkersSouth · 04/12/2024 19:25

Love it! It's my car's name

MammaKel · 04/12/2024 19:26

I'm glad I'm not on my own with purse a phone haha.

My friend named her daughter the same last year, it's not for me but it's very pretty.

Yeah, like Vajmuffington.

Oooh, Vajmuffington! Vag or muff for short? I bloody love it. If only I hadn’t finished having kids!

Yeah that's how I feel.

I think it's pretty and unusual. But I wouldn't use it myself.

There’s a child called Persephone in my daughters class at school, they read her name out in sharing assembly the other week and two mums were openly laughing and taking the piss out of the poor kids name !!
I think it’s one of those names that is a bit marmite.

This is absolutely disgusting behaviour, and says more about the idiots laughing than it does about the parents who named their child Persephone.

stripeyshutters · 04/12/2024 19:28

It makes me think of a musical instrument 🤷‍♀️

Thatcastlethere · 04/12/2024 19:29

I think it's beautiful and not out there at all now days. Ophelia (which has similar vibes) is in the top 100 most popular names. People are liking vintage sounding and longer romantic names for girls at the moment.
In my daughters nursery there's an Ottoline, a Gwendolyn and a Seraphina!!
I really don't think anyone would bat an eyelid at Persephone

Ooh I quite like Seraphina.

That's shocking behaviour!

I absolutely love it, but I also love Andromeda and Andromache and so on.

Enko · 04/12/2024 19:34

I loce Persephone it was on dh and my shortlist

CheeseNPickle3 · 04/12/2024 19:34

Queen of the Underworld, wife of Hades (and goddess of spring). Nice sounding name though.

I love Gwendolyn too. Reminds me of Daniel Deronda.

Some of these names are fairly literary, so maybe it depends on how much people like to read as to whether they sound 'out there' or not.

My own child's name was brought to my attention really from a book, and although I didn't like the character, I loved the name 😁

Lulu1919 · 04/12/2024 19:39

Per sef oh knee

cariadlet · 04/12/2024 19:40

I think it's a beautiful name for a literary character (I love Greek myths) but wouldn't give a baby the name. It would feel a bit pretentious. Although Seffy is a nice nickname.

wafflesmgee · 04/12/2024 19:41

Ii like the sound of the name but couldnr get past the myth it comes from, she was kidnapped by the kid of the underworld and forced to be his wife for 6months of every year....not really appropriate

Allihavetodoisdream · 04/12/2024 19:43

Depends where you live. Round these parts no one would bat an eyelid.
The school assembly mums are clearly very ill read.
I have loved this name since childhood but wouldn’t use it because of what happens to her. It’s like calling your daughter Leda, or Desdemona, or Ophelia. Bad juju.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 04/12/2024 19:45

I love it, but I read a lot of mythology as a child.

ttcat37 · 04/12/2024 19:47

Pretentious and twee imo

EvelynBeatrice · 04/12/2024 19:49

Love it. Know two both shortened to Persy.
Most kids raised on Greek mythology books and the Percy Jackson films know the name.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 04/12/2024 19:52

I don’t have any strong feelings about Persephone and I would have assumed most people would be able to pronounce it.

I do quite like the nickname Sephy.

soundsys · 04/12/2024 19:55

I love it! Would have called my daughter it but DH vetoed

EvelynBeatrice · 04/12/2024 19:56

I also know a Calliope and friends with Greek Cypriot heritage rejoice in names Aphrodite (a lot to live up to!) Hera, Artemis (‘Temmy’) and Athena. All gorgeous
