My understanding is that R.D Blackmore invented it for Lorna Doone for the same reason Shakespeare invented names - he wanted a name that related to the character. So because the character Lorna has Scottish heritage (she was adopted by the Exmoor Doone’s) he derived it from the Ancient place name Lorne in Scotland. As a bonus it is reminiscent of the word Forlorn - as Lorna herself is forlorn- a wild, lonely, wandering girl who feels trapped by the Doone’s until she falls in love with John Ridd.

Gorgeous, romantic, literary name imo - reminds me of names like Juliet, Miranda, Vanessa, Lara, Isolde etc. Its never been very popular so isn’t dated imo - except perhaps in Scotland when it made Top 100 in the mid century (due to the aforementioned Scots links).
