Thoughts on Lorna? Do you know any?

It's a long drawn out name which makes it feel mournful. Not particularly nice, I think

MadameMassiveSalad · 14/07/2024 11:47

Not a fan.

I prefer:

Lara
Leah
Lyra
Lila
Iona
Alana

Firsttimebabymummy · 14/07/2024 12:14

I like it, only know of one who is in her late 60's and a very bubbly lady.

HairyToity · 14/07/2024 12:17

I love it. I only know one, she is in her 70s.

PurpleChrayn · 14/07/2024 12:24

Very nice!

KirstenBlest · 14/07/2024 12:25

It's neither Scottish nor Welsh. It was invented by the author of Lorna Doone. I know one and she's Scottish. I know a few Welsh Lonas.

Fontainebleau007 · 14/07/2024 13:10

DHs aunt is Lorna

Violet17 · 14/07/2024 13:22

Like it

peaceinourtime · 14/07/2024 15:37

It’s a fab name. I know one aged in her 50/60s now

DanceMumTaxi · 14/07/2024 15:38

Not overly keen. The only one I know is 42. Prefer Lara.

Carebearsonmybed · 14/07/2024 15:55

It's so underused!

CyanideShake · 14/07/2024 16:03

I know loads of middle aged Lornas. Really dislike the name tbh.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/07/2024 19:59

I have only ever known one - at school. She'd be in her 60s now.

I have always liked the name, but that's only because I associate it so strongly with Lorna Doone and I used to love the book.

TheDonsDingleberries · 15/07/2024 22:59

Love it! I've met about three or four, ranging in age from a little girl under 10 to a woman whom I'm guessing was in her mid/late-forties, so I don't associate the name with any particular era.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/07/2024 23:24

Gorgeous. Underused literary name. I only know one who must be in her 60’s now but I don’t think it’s especially dated - it’s never been that popular.

Bullbreedbliss · 15/07/2024 23:26

Reminds me of lorne sausage sorry.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/07/2024 23:27

I suspect the only issue might be people mishearing it as Laura (which is much more popular) but I don’t think that would be enough to put me off such a romantic, elegant sounding name.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 15/07/2024 23:31

Always think of the book Lorna Doone.
Lorraine?
Prefer Laura.

FrogNToad · 15/07/2024 23:34

Really nice name. Only ever met one and I don't understand why it's never been more common.

spiderlight · 15/07/2024 23:51

I like it. Our vet is called Lorna and she's absolutely lovely. Scottish, probably in her 20s.

Klippityklopp · 16/07/2024 16:55

I'm in Scotland so know a few, they are mostly ages with me, 50's. I know one who is late 30's and thought even then it was quite an old fashioned name which is strange cause when you actually pronounce it it is quite nice

ginasevern · 16/07/2024 18:23

KirstenBlest · 14/07/2024 12:25

It's neither Scottish nor Welsh. It was invented by the author of Lorna Doone. I know one and she's Scottish. I know a few Welsh Lonas.

This is correct. The name was invented by the author of Lorna Doone. Although actually the Doone family in the book are Scottish and it is thought the author drew on Scottish references to create the name. I think it's a good, strong name that won't age and definitely won't be two a penny either.

Throwwaway · 16/07/2024 18:26

Never been a fan personally, it would sound a bit weird on a baby to me. It’s not hard to spell or pronounce though which is a benefit for the child’s sanity (from my experience)

Wbeezer · 16/07/2024 18:42

I know a 21 year old Lorna.

SuperGinger · 16/07/2024 18:52

Aside from family jokes about a grumpy old person who we used to call Lorna Doom for obvious reasons, I think it is horrid.

I've met quite a few other Lornas over the years and they were without exception very hard work.

Much nicer names out there
