Never met a Lorna. Vaguely know of 'Lorna Doone'. Apparently Cockney rhyming slang for spoon.

Personally, would not like my name to be Lorna.

Doingonesbest · 14/07/2024 02:57

I know four of them. Three are kind, hardworking, loveable people. The fourth, alas, is difficult but I think 75% is good going!
Beautiful name too 🙂

Lorna to me is like Brian or Gary or Sharon. Not something I'd choose.

It’s nowhere near as common as Brian, Gary or Sharon.

Onthemaintrunkline · 14/07/2024 07:01

For a second name maybe.

It's not- it's Scottish.

No it isn't- it was invented for a novel based on Exmoor

Doingmybest12 · 14/07/2024 07:12

I think it's sad sounding.

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/07/2024 07:23

It’s ok - it’s dropped a lot in popularity so I would assume someone older. I much prefer Laura, it sounds more classic somehow.

Toooldforthis36 · 14/07/2024 07:24

Lovely Scottish name - a few growing up in my primary in the 70/80s

Emmanuelll · 14/07/2024 07:27

I have a 22 year old Lorna.

Duckies · 14/07/2024 07:32

First association is Lorna Doone

Then Lorne sausage - (this may just be me... it's breakfast time!)

Also the Australian activewear brand Lorna Jane.

Why do people keep saying it is Scottish? It is a literary name - invented for the novel Lorna Doone, set on Exmoor

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/07/2024 07:35

I love it. I know a young one and a couple of others in Scotland (where I am)

Feminine form of Lorne, place in west of Scotland.

and there isn’t a Scot alive who doesn’t know what Lorne sausage is!

MirandaBlu · 14/07/2024 07:37

I think it comes across as melancholy because of the association with the word "lorn": forsaken, desolate, wretched, bereft, lost, ruined, or undone. Forlorn. Lovelorn. Purloined. It just feels sad.

I think the Scottish association is possibly from the place name Lorn(e) - which is sometime also a male name - e.g., the actor Lorne Greene.

I don't know anyone but I love it! It did crop up when choosing DD's name. I think DH was worried she'd spend her days correcting it from Laura which maybe why it didn't reach the short list for us.

onlyconnect · 14/07/2024 07:42

I saw someone on a train last week reading g Lorna Doone and it got me thinking about the name. I like it. Read the book and check you're happy with the character as it is strongly associated with the book.

MrsStottlemeyer · 13/07/2024 21:47

I always think it's a bit gloomy. I prefer Laura.

Yes, makes me think of ‘forlorn’. There was a Lorna at school who would be mid 30s now, remember thinking she had a VERY grown up name. For me it’s got the Sheila/Pam vibe rather than the Edith/Daphne vibe which is in at the mo. Although having said that there are celeb babies called Pamela and Barbara and these things go in cycles so you’re probably ahead of the times.

Are you saying Brian, Gary and Sharon are popular for babies?

muddyford · 14/07/2024 07:54

It's DM's middle name and I love it.

Heatherbell1978 · 14/07/2024 07:55

It's Scottish. I know the name well...and I'd say it belongs to women of a certain age in Scotland! Whether it's due for a resurgence I really don't know.

Needanewname42 · 14/07/2024 08:05

I really like it. Only know 1 who's 40s

But it's in the same vain as Lorena, Loren, Lorraine, and the mix of them I know go from 50s to tweens.

SallyWD · 14/07/2024 08:12

I really like it. I only know one in her 40s. It's lovely.

AnOldCynic · 14/07/2024 08:23

BruceWillissDribble · 13/07/2024 21:57

Its a bit Welsh

And?

No. I was quoting another post.

TheCultureHusks · 14/07/2024 11:12

I also think of it as a sad, slightly depressing name, though objectively quite nice. I wouldn’t like to be called it.
