Hi,
Just wanted to hear people's thoughts on the name Olive?

OP posts:

One of the ugliest names.

I imagine a little girl with brown hair who is good, sweet natured, and well behaved girl, who just fades into the background as she never draws attention to herself.

Beachs · 30/04/2024 19:17

It’s better than Olivia but they will blend in with a sea of Olivia/livvy/livs which I personally hate.

Theothername · 30/04/2024 19:26

I love it.

Not as keen on Olivia which feels like it tries too hard. Can’t bear Oliver at all.

But Olive feels just perfect.

Blingismything · 30/04/2024 22:48

I love it too.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 01/05/2024 00:20

I like it 🙋🏼‍♀️
I'm a fan of old names like this, I also like names such as Heidi, Hilda, Ada, Eva, Elsie, Pearl, Violet etc

ellierossi · 01/05/2024 04:31

I love it!!!

SemperIdem · 01/05/2024 12:21

I don’t like it. However it is less painfully overused than Olivia which seems to be becoming this centuries Sarah.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/05/2024 12:37

I like it, but it is too close to the ubiquitous Olivia and Oliver to have been an option for me. It's definitely growing dramatically in popularity and I would expect it to break the top 50 in the next few years (if we ever actually get any data from the ONS). It is probably also worth knowing that it is quite popular for dogs.

You do not need to worry about Olive Oyl or On The Buses unless you anticipate that your baby will spend a lot of time with large groups of over-sixties. In fact, looking at the characters from the TV series (which, incidentally, ended in 1973) it is quite the predictor of current name trends: Stanley, Mabel, Arthur etc.

Moveoverdarlin · 01/05/2024 17:14

I think it’s awful. Synonymous with Olive from On The Buses and Olive Oil from Popeye - neither were lookers.

I would assume the name belonged to a little old lady who was over 100 years of age.

Whilst it’s popular, Olivia is far prettier.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/05/2024 17:18

I would be genuinely surprised if anyone under the age of forty knew who Olive from On The Buses was. I am early forties and only have a vague idea.

Crunchymum · 01/05/2024 17:24

Love it. Would be top of my girls list.

ladycarlotta · 01/05/2024 17:33

I really like it. It's retro and sweet, and I like that it has a botanical/nature vibe too.

Yes agree. Any parents of an Olive these days would have probably never heard of this program.I am 60 and never watched it..just seems a strange reaction from people TBH.
FWIW I love the name and think Olivia is so dull in comparison.

Floralnomad · 01/05/2024 19:14

I don’t think anyone is saying don’t use Olive because of On the Buses , but the OP was asking opinions and obviously there are several of us that associate the name with that and hence dislike it . It’s no different to saying you don’t like x name because you have a bad association with it . For example I dislike Imogen because I’ve known a couple of particularly nasty ones .

Sandysandwich · 01/05/2024 19:23

It's fine as a name. Not personally one that I would use as it just seems like a food to me, and I don't actually like olives. I know that it's a name and a well used one, but to me it still feels like calling a child Lentil or Grape.

Tootytoot78 · 01/05/2024 19:30

Olive is a drab colour, and a drab name.

DrJoanAllenby · 01/05/2024 19:35

Olive Oyl and Olive On the buses. But I am old and the younger generations won't have that association.

I don't like the Nick name of Olly/Ollie as I think of Olly Beak!

Olivia is a nice name.

RuthW · 01/05/2024 21:24

It's ok and miles better than Olivia.

HashB · 01/05/2024 21:34

Really not a fan. Always think it sounds a bit pretentious too.

Under 40, well aware of the British tv programme.

Olive Oyl is off putting too.

LipstickedPowderedAndPainted · 01/05/2024 21:48

Seems to be currently 'in'. I don't like it. It's just very blunt sounding. Much better options avaiiable for me personally.

FlatWhite2 · 01/05/2024 23:04

Love Olive, so timeless!

ZiggyZowie · 01/05/2024 23:07

Olive. On the Buses

Sta-aan !!!😣

MissBedelia · 01/05/2024 23:07

There’s a new popeye movie coming out. I’d steer clear!

Copperoliverbear · 01/05/2024 23:28

I love olive x
