Hi,
Just wanted to hear people's thoughts on the name Olive?

OP posts:

Love it, probably in my top ten.

Noyokymum · 30/04/2024 14:40

Absolutely love the name Olive .People referring to a program donkeys years ago is so strange.

I know 3 young Olives all chosen because their parents wanted something more unusual. I don’t really get this because it’s sooo close to the very very popular Olivia, it doesn’t feel unusual at all. It’s cute as a name though and I think the frumpy associations or ‘on the buses’ (I’ve never heard of this but always referenced in these threads!) won’t be there with the younger generations, it will be a normal name to them.

Exactly this. I am late 50s and genuinely never watched that program,my children in their 20s have never heard of it ,so a child being called Olive now is so irrelevant 🤦‍♀️

It's awful. Makes me think of a pizza topping that lots of people dislike and Popeye's girlfriend. Plus I just don't like the sound of it.

JimPansy · 30/04/2024 14:48

@Noyokymum , not really. There haven't been any other Olives to associate it with. If you said Olivia I'd think Newton-John, Channon, de Haviland, Colman.
If you'd said Jackie, many would say Kennedy, magazine, Chan, Stewart, Merrick etc . Many of those references might not mean anything to you.

qotsa · 30/04/2024 14:54

I love it. A million times better than Olivia. There were four Olivia's in my DSs class and three Oliver's.

stayathomer · 30/04/2024 14:56

I love it personally and know two lovely people called olive!

Floralnomad · 30/04/2024 14:59

I’m also old enough for it to just conjure up the image of the woman from ‘on the buses’ which is also one of the worst Tv programmes ever made .

I also prefer Olivia. I'm old and to me Olive will always be that woman from On The Buses.

Im in my 20s I watched on the buses with grandparents and same the name Olive is unusable for me

Neveralonewithaclone · 30/04/2024 15:06

It's absolutely awful, so bad that Brenda is better.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 30/04/2024 15:07

Olivia is much nicer.

It's nice but have you considered Jimberly?

This set me off again having spent most of yesterday laughing at the Jimberly thread

newnamechange98 · 30/04/2024 15:11

I always find it odd that people that if a name has a not great connotation it won't matter in a generation or so as if no one has any reference to anything that was in general culture unless it literally happened in their lifetime. Olive is a prime example of this, there's no guarantee negative connotations will be wiped out in a generation or so.

Thorfire · 30/04/2024 16:01

Ugly so ugly

eggandonion · 30/04/2024 16:08

I hate it. It was my mother's name and my grandmother's name and my middle name. I would have preferred Olivia.

chattyness · 30/04/2024 16:17

Justcallmebebes · 30/04/2024 07:47

Same with me. First person I thought of

me three!

IdaGlossop · 30/04/2024 16:24

A gen Z I know, Olivia, has just changed her name to Olive on her Instagram profile. I was taken aback, TBH, as Olive sounds blunt and makes me think of On The Buses. Olivia, while very popular, has an elegance about it. The change may indicate an Olive renaissance though.

pinkmags · 30/04/2024 16:24

Unless it is no longer used for this 🫒?!

pinkmags · 30/04/2024 16:26

Olivia has a much nicer sound.

Olivia also sounds lovely in other languages - Olive does not!

Berlinlover · 30/04/2024 16:27

Olive, along with Oliver are both awful names.

Sunnnybunny72 · 30/04/2024 16:28

Horrible name.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 30/04/2024 16:30

This is the character Olive from On the Buses.

Jimberlee-Ollie

oakleaffy · 30/04/2024 16:32

Also Olive Oyl from the cartoon- too many associations!

Nextyear · 30/04/2024 16:33

My DD is friends with an Olivia whose nickname is Olive. It's all she's ever known by.
